TOPIC: DF in ruins?

DF in ruins? 10 Months, 1 Week ago
So reaper did some ruins and while they looked nice.

I would love to see DF do some multi level modular ruins in dwarvenite.

I saw the header and conjured this image of a very lonely Jeff sitting in a huge empty warehouse (all GT having shipped) a few torn bits of cardboard strewn here and there, small dust devils of little plastic baggies swirling up and then dissipating...

I had a long post about ruin pieces with dowel holes in the top and bottom of the walls that connected with dwarvenite pegs making multi level ruins. And stone pegs to fill and cover the holes if the pieces were at the top or being used mixed with regular tiles. Curved walls that took 8 pieces to make a circle and on and on.

Then I hit some key and lost it all so I just threw it out there, short and vague.

I'm not as interested in ruins as others seem to be. And the miniatures terrain market is already glutted with ruins.

However, we know that Stefan already has a modular castle in mind. (In whatever stage, in whatever medium.)

So I will suggest that -- as an add-on to that project -- maybe he could include broken/distressed pieces to make a ruin, or to replace "whole" pieces when they are "damaged" during siege warfare or combat with monsters.

I love that DF makes modular pieces, rather than single special purpose set pieces (like the Reaper ruins. The reaper piece is nice, but I see it more for a diorama or display piece rather than a something that will see much gaming use (there's only some many times you want to have the party fight a dragon in the same setting.

DF already has a Ruins set for their MM line, and as jackattack alludes it follows a "destroyable" motif. Piece can look like normal walls/corners until you remove the top portion and leave a ruined piece behind. I would definitely like to see a GT version, at some point, but at least for me, its pretty far down the list of things to see in GT.

I feel like DF is doing the right thing in having their cavern KS for GT next. Between the existing GT line which works very well for castles/keeps/dungeons/etc and dungeons, and the new line for caves, tunnels, caverns, underdark they'll have covered a huge variety of the basic needs.

By the time the caverns KS happens, we'll have lots of collective experience with building with the existing GT and should have a great idea what types of pieces from Wicked Additions/Advanced Builder, would be most useful to have also converted to GT. I suspect stuff like passages for the existing GT is probably the third major expansion that people would be clamoring for. (I still hold out that Sewers is likely to be better in resin -- more details and probably lower total demand)

Jack, I do like the idea of some ruins bits that can be used to replace other pieces. I do agree that for larger set pieces there is already a lot out there.

Nielsene, I think they have given us a bit more utility with that "Dragons Don't Share II" set than meets the eye. The ability to separate the pieces makes it far more versatile. I can easily see combining the ruined stair sets with DF, that piece even separates into two bits. I will concede that the size makes the pieces less modular and that I would not reach for them as often, but I can easily see myself incorporating them on occasion. The ability to take it into four separate pieces not counting the dragon and base was a great idea imo.

kodiak, I like the idea of bits more specifically designed for vertical builds, but I'm not sure about the "dowel rod" pieces. They make me think of the old bow ties... easy to lose, unattractive, etc. Not trying to be harsh or a downer, I like the idea in general I just don't care for tiny fiddly bits that aren't attached unless they are themselves decor.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

As soon as I came up with the idea I worried about bow tie nightmares.

But if the holes were a standard wooden dowel size then the only worry worry part would be the stones with pegs and they would not be tiny and would be decorative.

But this is just a how could it be done discussion.

Reapers is nice but it is in no way DF modular.

And the really advantage would be ability to mix it in with standard Dwarvenite GT with all the durability that Dwarvenite has and cost savings.

IIRC, DF already has some "breakaway" tiles. They start off as a full wall, but the DM can remove a section to convert it to a broken one. Someone mentioned how his DM did this in a game where the players were trying to siege a castle. As the castle took damage, the DM would remove parts of the wall!

Anyway, ruins would be a great addition to the DF line, for games like Song of Blades and Heroes, or other skirmish games!
