Edit:

I should have posted this in the feedback instead of the questions, so there's a fuller discussion here:

========

After biowizard helpfully linked to a golden room painted by law, I decided to experiment with Krylon's gold foil metallic spray paint on one of the dwarvenite half-walls.

I'll edit this post and update with pics later, but for now I thought I'd post and initial observation.

After spraying the front side of the piece, when I was checking it, the back side had several drops of a clear oily liquid. I'll report on tackiness after it's dried.

Last update:
It's only been a few hours, but it's clear that this approach isn't golden. There's an oily buildup on the piece, so this is the end of the experiment.

I'm going to go with the metallic acrylic approach.

Not so last update:
Check out the thread in the other forum. The culprit (Toluene) has been identified and I'm going to experiment with priming to see if that protects the Dwarvenite while the Toluene evaporates after spraying.

Thanks for the update - it's really helpful as we experiment with different techniques.

I added a link above to another discussion. The problem is Toluene, but I suspect primer will protect the Dwarvenite while the Toluene evaporates. I'll post all updates (and pics) in the other forum.

Not a problem. I genuinely appreciate the tip, even if it didn't work out.

Krylon Matte Finish 1311 works great for sealing the pieces. I used two coats, it dried fast and there is no tackiness.

After my experiences with the Gold Foil paint and Toluene I'm hesitant to use anything with it, although the Matte Spray is 20% and the Gold Foil paint is 32%.

This PVC chemical resistance chart lists Toluene as bad stuff for Dwarvenite:

Thanks for the great information. I'll check gain tonight to see how the pieces are doing. Perhaps the paint itself is protecting the pieces from the Krylon?

In my research on how to paint foams of various sorts I learned that several chemicals used to aid even delivery through a spray paint can's nozzle are damaging to several material types.

The key is to paint a primer coat that is thick enough to prevent those chemicals from eating through it, the thickness needed can vary based on the spray paint you use, but it generally works with a standard layer for most.

Some of the chemicals can actually evaporate before the spray even hits the object, but that method depends on too many factors that are hard to control, so I wouldn't rely on it.

I hope to get my garage insulated and heated soon so my workshop will be usable in the winter, the final step will be to make a spray hood with some filtration so I can use spray paints all winter long as I choose.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...
