Finishing the game tiles: Ink washes and sealant 10 Months, 1 Week ago
Just wondering about two things on finishing a paint job on the game tiles.

1) Has anyone used an ink wash before/after dry-brushing the white highlights? I've been wondering what a brown or black wash might look like.

2) Has anyone used a matte sealant for the game tiles?

Hi there!

I haven't done any washes on my tiles yet, but I have sealed them. I used Testors Dullcote spray lacquer. I tested it on a piece first to see If it left the surface tacky. I let it sit a few days and didn't feel any signs of tackiness, so I sealed up my first batch of tiles.

By the way, I used Pokorny paints. However, I recall hearing that the tiles do not need to be sealed if painted with Pokorny paints, but the OCD side of me tells me I should.

The nice thing about this sealant is that it removes some of the shine from the pieces. The paint and the tiles tend to be a bit on the shiny side for my taste, so the Dullcote is great for removing it.

My OCD side has been curious about sealants as well. I'd be worried about the Dullcote cracking over time, since the PVC, while firm, isn't perfectly rigid. If anyone tries a matte acrylic spray, I hope they post the results here.

I have used Army Painter Matte Sealant with good results. It's thin enough that it's allowing me to dry brush another coat of white. As I wasn't happy with how dark my tiles were coming out. I am not sure that a wash is really required. If you paint like the Video shows the tiles have a ton of depth. Also since you start with a wet top brush you still have black plastic showing though. YMMV.

Have they gotten tacky since you sprayed them? I was reading some concern about Dwarvenite reacting to the toluene in the Krylon spray.

I hit mine with Krylon Matte three weeks ago and they are great. Even the underside that was not painted has reacted favorably.

That's great. I was wondering how the bare material might react. Thanks!
