Thoughts upon a Game Tiles Passage Set 1 Year, 4 Months ago
I was revealing here a possible design by Stefan of a few Game Tiles pieces that could be used to generate Passages (pieces with walls on both ends that still retain a full 2" * 2" floor grid). These pieces are very useful for combat taking place in corridors, as you otherwise lack the space to fit with ease 2 minis side by side if the corridor is only 1" 5/8 wide (using only the modular 2*2 pieces such as in the Game Tiles Set). Stefan said his approach for making new corridors available for Game Tiles is apparently necessary because the molds for the PVC/Dwarvenite can only be used to cast pieces of a certain size. Based on what I saw on the Game Tiles kickstarter video at 0:31 - 0:34, here is what I think could be an upcoming Game Tiles Passage Set:

With only these 4 pieces, you could be assembling the following passage pieces from the Classical Room & Passages Set.

An X Section:

The whole concept of the "Game Tiles" approach is to do the fewest number of different pieces as possible to be used as frequently as possible so that they are being cast in huge quantities, driving the costs down. I thought at first that DF would release Passage Pieces as stretch goals in the present kickstarter. I don't think this will happen anymore as this would go against the very concept I just stated. Furthermore, I think DF would have a hard time releasing only a few of the 4 pieces at once as they complete each other. For now, my guess is there will be another kickstarter to come for a Game Tiles Passage Set.

The number of pieces in such as Set would have to be maintained low to maintain profitability. Nevertheless, if these pieces had a huge increase in versatility, there could be more buyers to justify this increased number. Stefan and Jeff would have to carefully plan and make calculations. Here's an example of what I think a Game Tiles Passage Set with higher versatility could look like:

A T Section:

A Corner:

The increased versatility of my concept comes from many factors.

1) What I call a "Straight Wall (Complete Tiles + obliques)" would have limited use in setups but to complete a T section. I therefore eliminated it.
2) What I call a "Corner Wall (Complete Tiles + obliques)" would have limited use in setups but to complete a corner passage. I therefore eliminated it.
3) The two very simple pieces I am proposing (Straight Wall with Complete Tiles & Corner Wall with complete Tiles) would be very useful for someone with access only to Game Tiles Sets and no advanced builder Sets. These pieces could be used to make full 2" width corridors running right beside an existing room when modularity allows it. One person could also make a few rooms with complete tiles on a few walls of the room when it matters and when modularity allows it.

Furthermore, the two pieces I called "Straight Passage (Left and Right corner)" could be eliminated altogether and only the "Straight Passage (two corners)" be used. This would bring the total number of pieces in this Set to only 4, as Stefan's possible concept, although one would have to "suffer" seeing a little empty diagonal when assembling corners and T sections. Perhaps these passage pieces with only one diagonal corner could be stretch goals?

Anyway, tell us what you think! Help Stefan in his design!

p.s. Stefan, you might have sculpted/designed & re-designed all this many times already. I'm just a dedicated fan trying to help here.

Wow, a lot of good ideas Bio! I know I would certainly like passages. This seems like a very good way to do it, possible just slight modification to existing molds.

Before going into new KS sets, it should be good to add for newcomers and buyers of this KS about secret passages, dungeon entrance, traps & pits.

I think you could do narrow corridors even more simply. If you were to make a free standing flippable wall that stood on an existing floor tile and a free standing flippable L (longer on one side then the other) you could basically use the existing wall and corner pieces (to say nothing of the ability to build free form room, 2x2 square pillars etc

So assumeing 2 of each unlocked as with the other "custom-ish pieces" the two set level could build something like the above.

Picc, Thank you for your input and welcome to the DF forum!

I think unfortunately you underestimate the thickness of a DF wall. The walls attached to a standard "Straight Wall" piece are 3/8" thick. This makes for the 1 inch grid to show only 5/8" of a square next to the wall. Your idea of having free standing walls is not new and has already been tried with the Catacomb Set where a free-standing wall is 1/2" thick. I guess this increase in thickness was deemed necessary for stability. Also, your idea of having a 3/8" thick wall standing on a Straight Wall piece would leave only 1 1/4" between the 2 walls. I think this would unfortunately make it impossible to fit 2 minis in between (side-by-side) and make the walls fall down each time you were to move a piece.

Keep the ideas coming!

I think Picc's intent was to add an idea for Narrow Passages to the thread, not to present an alternative for standard Passages.

jackattack, I indeed misunderstood that Picc's idea was for doing narrow (1 1/4 inch wide) corridors (as in here). I would also like a free standing wall but I would need to be convinced first that it does not fall too easily.

making the wall thicker would be just about the correct size for narrow passages. I still like the 45 degree left, right, and both idea from bio's earlier post.

Well...

As someone who has way too many 2D cardboard tiles, my two bits is that the more different tiles you have, the harder it is to keep track of them all. Additionally, DF files are 25mm, but many miniatures are 28mm heroic and have parts (eg. arms) that are far off the base, making them difficult to put onto DF tiles with walls.

So I like the idea of "attachable walls". If your miniatures are too big, use a tile with one less wall or no walls. If you don't have much money, you can use sticky-tack to temporarily convert a basic tile into a passageway. If you have extra sets, permanently attach a wall to a basic tile. DF can also pre-assemble these tiles, if making molds is too costly.

(Where's the thread that discusses how to fit oversized figures onto DF tiles? Thanks in advance!)
