Is this is the end of Mastermase etc? 1 Year, 7 Months ago
Hi Guys,
I read the post and saw the video for the kick starter and have to be 100% honest.. at first I thought WOW.. great idea..

But then it occured to me, does this spell the end for Mastermase and caverns etc, will the polystone ranges come to an end?

I know they are pricy, and I know they heavy etc, as someone with a limited income, I raise funds for a few purchases each year, and its not easy, but I love the quality and I love the "feel" of the sets and pieces.

I know the aim is to make a similar product more affordable, but I fear it will come at a cost.

So, will we see and end to Cavernous sets and Mastermaze, wicked additions etc, with the production of this new product?

They have already answered that this is not the end of the original product lines. They will run in tandem. In fact, Catacombs #2 is in development. Funding the Game Tiles Kickstarter does advance their ability to produce that new line, but it also gives the company money that is necessary for restocks.

There is a simple answer to that: no.

Stefan has repeatedly said that the expected profits to be made with the Game Tiles will actually allow DF to survive and continue being in business. With the low costs of molds for Polystone resin, as compared with the high costs of Dwarvenite molds, all the line of products that are not "mainstream", as the Game Tiles Set is, will continue being made with Polystone. Finally, one of the goal of Game Tiles is to create another generation of DF fans that could eventually dig into more classical DF products.

Thanks guys.. that is good to know! I can breath a sigh of relief..

I did a trawl to see if there was a statement on it, but I couldn't find it.

Good to know. Cheers.

Ninthgoose and others have raised this concerns and it is a good point that Ninthgoose makes that perhaps need to be addressed so gems of information like this is made more easily accessible. (Not many will join the Forum just to look for answers)

Listening to all the great questions and answers that have come up over the recent days, I would suggest that a good 'update' statement that covers these all makes sense on both the KS site as well as DF Home page. (Forums are already covered as there is a good search as well as the defined section areas)

Lets not forget that typically few people will come onto these Forum's to post their concerns / questions. There will be many more people out there that wont even go looking for an answer to their questions. It really makes sense to provide this type of information upfront.

Another thing to remember about the Dwarvinite vs Polystone sets- it was briefly mentioned somewhere (I believe by Stefan) that the metal molds used to make the Dwarvinite pieces don't allow for deep, detailed cuts like you see in some of the fancier Polystone pieces (think of some of the nicer entryway pieces, fountains, the HS2 drawbridge). Think Dwarvinite for lots of simple, similar pieces reproduced in a single set, think Polystone for multiple sculpts throughout a set with lots of extras and lots of fine detail. Or at least, that was my take-away from what was said.
