Where is Dwarven Forge made? 1 Year, 7 Months ago
I see that the company is located in Illinois, but I am wondering where the pieces are manufactured and painted.

I was glad to support the Reaper Bones Kickstarter, because a side effect to getting a load of miniatures for a great price was allowing the company to move its production back to America.

I, of course, understand that cost is cost and a company would probably manufacture its product in the cheapest country possible (like China). But, with America's economy tanking, I'd feel better supporting this Kickstarter, if I knew that the pieces were already manufactured in America or that backing this project would help Dwarven Forge move production to the states.

Either way, I wish you luck and I will most likely support the project because the work is excellent and I think it would add to the gaming table experience.

Rotten,

I understand your enthusiasm to have the products made in the USA. There's no way though that a hand-painted product can be made in the US while also being cheap. This is simple mathematics. Painting takes time, which represents many hourly wages. A US-based painter is paid 10 times more than a Chinese worker, hence DF products are done in China by a sub-contracter. This is painful but there is presently no way around that that we know of. Also, remember that DF is a very, very, very small company: 2 employees. Stefan is the sculptor and founder (he lives in NY). Jeff is handling orders and going to GenCon (he live in Illinois and provides his home address as DF's official address).

Rotten,

It's an honest question, and Yes, it's true that we make the production of the pieces in China, like most products of this sort...but please don't feel unpatriotic because of that, because in fact, lot's of Americans ALSO get to put a decent amount of money in their pockets...mainly the folks at UPS and USPS...a great deal of our money goes to their drivers and their administrators....also, our warehouse is in Tennessee and all the boys there are happy to get the work too, as well as all the folks at Gen Con and other conventions we go to.....

And then there are the American Sculptors, like Sandra Garrity and Casey Eskridge and myself....American Artists who have found a niche for themselves... and finaly there is Jeff, and many of his friends who work our booth and who help out with the website, etc....and the accountants...so you see, lot's of Americans are benefiting in this endevour, not just Asians:)

Concerning the Asians, they too are very happy to get this work...for some it is literally a life saving job....yes, they get paid less, but everything out there also costs less as well....we use reputable companies and they are paid decently and work in humane conditions...it is considered a good job to have, and I am proud to be able to provide this kind of work for them, especially the women who have even greater difficulty then the men in finding decent work.

I am Proud to be an American, both my mother (Italian) father (Czech-republic) and I (Korean-American) were very, very proud to become American Citizens and to be fortunate enough to live in this GREAT country... We LOVE this country and are humbled to be living the American Dream:)

Thank you for your responses Biowizard and Stefan.

Your responses are truthful and the reality of today's economy and I'm sure the current set up allows your company to provide it's customers the best price you can give.

I was just wondering and hoping that this Kickstarter could help move production to America. I understand now that it probably cannot. It is the situation for 90% of the comanies in this country as well.

I will most likely be participating in this Kickstarter, if my financial situation allows (which it should, unless some unforeseen situaiton arises).

Your products are amazing. The best of luck to you.

I just had this discussion with a chap over in the Dwarven Forge Kickstarter forum over at Hirst Arts. I ended the discussion because he resorted to insults and I don't have time for that. Anyway, I felt the need to mention it because he unnecessarily brought it up in an effort to dissuade potential pledges.

Some folks just cannot wrap their mind around the fact that Dwarven Forge and Hirst Arts are not mutually exclusive. Too bad because they complement each other wonderfully.
