My previous post was missing the default disclaimer: "Character Statistics & Items are subject to DM approval." And there are two edits regarding 1st edition "age" modifications to ability scores (essentially, don't use), and the Number of Magic Items & XP allowed to be allocated.

With Zaltar's approval, the below is how I would respond to the questions posed:

DaWolf:
Just a couple of questions:
Q1) Is the XP for an item = the XP cost to create an item?
Q2) Anything +2 or less for a weapon is legit?

A1) The XP for an Item should be as listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide (and Unearthed Arcana?) "Non-standard" magic items (those not specifically listed in the AD&D tomes) would need the specific approval of the DM. I'd stay away from them unless you have a specific backstory-related reason for the item.
A2) The "+2" limitation is a guideline to promote game balance. If you show up with a +1 Luck Blade, don't be surprised if the DM tells you it's all out of wishes (or only grants wishes when it wants to ;-)

Shadox:
Q1) Do 1st level potions and scrolls count as our 4 magic items?

A1) Assuming the Character Class levels equal 4, I would suggest that potions of the same type could count as one of your limited four "items" such as 2 Healing potions (just as a set of thirteen +1 Arrows would count as one "item" & 260xp.) I would suggest that scrolls count individually (with up to 7 spells inscribed.) And if you are not familiar with "Magic Spell Failure" (DMG p.128) you may want to get acquainted before inscribing that Wish spell...

As always, the DM must have the final say.

Just trying to understand.

My two questions were trying to see if it was possible to expand the selection of magic items from what is listed in the DMG. In the 1st edition DMG, a +2 bow is not listed as are a number of other +2 weapons.

Based on the answers I am assuming we are limited to what the DMG lists along with the DMG XP values. btw = My DMG list 20 XP as the total for the entire group of 2-24 arrows +1.

Please be aware that I am not trying to "rock the boat" in any way. In fact, feel free to tell me to refrain from further "game framework" posts and I will comply. It is merely my enthusiasm for an opportunity to once again exercise my AD&D repository of information.

In order to make it easier for Stefan to prepare a suitable adventure for us, I believe it would be best if we did not stray too far "off the reservation" and stick to the printed stuff when possible. That said, there is a +1 Bow in the DMG which is listed as 500xp. Here is the excerpt from the DMG: "Dwarven and elven manufactured items - the +3 dwarven war hammer, certain other magic axes and hammers, cloaks and boots of elvenkind, magic arrows, magic bows in some cases, and even some magic daggers and swords - are likewise beyond the ken of player characters of these races. Only very old, very intelligent and wise dwarves and elves who have attained maximum level advancement are able to properly forge, fashion, and/or make these items and hove the appropriate magicks and spells to change them into special items - i.e., these items are likewise the precinct of the DM exclusively."

As far as the xp awarded for +1 Arrows, I'll have to dig up my Dragon Magazine with the "Ask a DM" question: "Twenty-Four +1 Arrows are only 20xp?" where EGG answers that question about missiles...

Understood. Just that with the current character creation set the role play is more about the magic items than it is about your character class(es) with several character class(es) no longer being viable. I just happen to have been role playing one of the options which is no longer viable. I removed the postings in order to remove any ambiguity that might have been caused by a change in character concept. It's all good.

I am just trying to establish whether:
1)each person will use their version of the rules that they have
2)we all use a commmon set. If so: a) we wait until the first game session to do so; OR b) we use electronic versions that will in all likelihood not match any particular persons hard copies. In either case we agree on what to use since it already known that some only have 1st edition rules, some only have 2nd edition rules, and some have both.

Either of these options are good with me.

In my humble opinion I do not think we need to focus on the "rules" that much. Stefan plays a really laid back game that is a blend of 1st and 2nd ed although it mostly leans towards 1st ed. The rules are only there for mechanics. I sent my ideas over to DF and am just about done with my character. I choose a few items some armor, a weapon, and some things in a backpack. I am ready to dance and display my mastery of acrobatics to everyone.

Agreed Shadox,

I just want everyone to be happy with their characters, it's all going to be great fun!

it's not what your character has that will help him/her survive... it's your actions more than anything...the magic items and such are just to help you fill out and imagine your characters...to feel good about them...to help describe the character....but I feel it's the story telling, the camaraderie, that makes for good D&D...so lets all have fun:)

Now, I've got a task for everyone....please bring a miniature that will represent your character! Don't fret, If you can't get one, I might be able to lend you one that is close enough...I have dozens...but it might be fun If you find one that is close to what you imagine...

and lastly, If anyone is intimidated at all about making a character, no worries, i can provide you with one ready to go:) Just let me know a few weeks before we play.....whenever that is...it's up to Shadox I suppose?

We thought that we would wait until after summer as to not try and match everyone's vacation schedule. A few could not do sept. We had a few dates adn I think everyone leaned towards Nov 9th. Does that work for you?
