DaWolf, sounds reasonable to me...i think there can be some flexibility in levels:

Fighters, Rangers, Paladins: 3rd level
Magic users, Clerics: 4th
Theives: 5th

What magical items one has could also skew this....a fighter with no magic armor or weapons could be 4th or even 5th if he/she had average ability scores and nothing really outstanding: i.e. 18/95 strength!

I am partial to theives being a higher level and/or having appropriate magical items simply because they are so poor at everything at low level and not much use then to the party...Fighters, Rangers, Paladins have lots of hit points so they can survive better at 3rd level...

I usually only allow max hit points at 1st level, after that you roll, but must get at least half or re-roll...

All – Updated based on Shadox and Stefan inputs.

1) Ability Scores (stats): use of 3d6 method at www.dragonsfoot.org/fe/articles/1echargen.shtml to generate your character of desired gender, race, and class (reroll until you qualify for your desired race/class - no power gaming here)

2) Level:

    • Fighter types (Fighter, Ranger, Paladin): 3rd
    • Magic User types (Mages, Illusionist): 4th
    • Clerical types (Clerics, Druids. Monks): 4th
    • Thieves: 5th


3) Alignment: no evil - keeping it heroic

4) Hit Points (hps): max at 1st with 75% thereafter

    • Fighter( d10 for hps) would have 10+7.5+7.5 = 25 plus 3 times CON bonus at 3rd level
    • Cleric (d8 for hps) would have 8+6+6+6 =26 plus 4 times CON bonus at 4th level


5) Magic and wealth = (all level and class appropriate):

    • one scroll or one potion
    • one miscellaneous magic item
    • +1 weapon or one charged magic item (w/ 3 charges)
    • +1 armor or +1 shield or +1 ring of protection
    • 200 gp


6) Possible deviations (reduced magic and average ability scores):

    • Fighter example: no magic armor or weapons could be 4th
    • Fighter example: no magic armor or weapon and average ability scores and nothing really outstanding (i.e. 18/95 strength!) could be 5th


7) DM has final approval of character

I've never played 1st Edition, so I will defer to the rest of the group regarding how to build characters that are well balanced (useful to the party without being overpowered). My favorite part of gaming is the role playing, and I get the impression that with this group that aspect of the game isn't going to be a problem.

man if i had had the money to go in on it i would have loved to have done this i can only IMAGINE how much fun a session with stefan would be but alas i have a wedding to try and save up for. Maybe if i ask nicely i could see if i could get the same sorta deal but at a later date for my honey moon when it all happens lol (fiancee is really awesome).

Ok, I've given this a bit of consideration and here are my thoughts/desires on character creation:

I would suggest that each character start with 18,000 (and 1 if 1st Ed.) experience points. I would also suggest that they start with the following Ability Score numbers: 17, 15, 13, 11, 9, & 7.

From this starting point, generate the character with the following guidelines:

1. Ability scores may be raised by expending Experience points with the following progression: 1,000xp for an increase of 1, 2,000xp for an increase of 2, 4,000xp for an increase of 3, 8,0000xp for an increase of 4, and 16,000xp for an increase of 5. The most obvious example would be a Warrior (Fighter) who would want the highest Strength possible so he would be 2nd level (2001xp) with an 18/99 Strength (18=1000xp, 18/50=2000xp, 18/75=4000xp, 18/90=8000xp, 18/99=16000xp). 2001xp + 16000xp = 18000xp Ability scores would not be allowed to be lowered in favor of raising another for free. Racial modifiers would be applied before altering scores. EDIT: Age modifiers are assumed in the raw Ability Scores (no Age modifiers allowed)

2. Magic Items may be allotted by expending Experience points according to the Dungeon Master's Guide (and Unearthed Arcana?) experience point values. For example: A 4th level Wizard (Magic-User, 10001xp) would like Bracers of Defense AC 5 (2500xp), a Wand of Frost (4000xp), a Magical Quarterstaff +2 (500xp), and Gauntlets of Dexterity (1000xp). 10001xp + 2500xp + 4000xp + 500xp + 1000xp = 18001xp. No magical bonuses of any item would be allowed to be greater than +2 (this would also exclude multiple "plus" items that have a bonus of more than +2 at certain times). All players would be encouraged to develop a backstory for each magical item. EDIT: My example is wrong. There should be two more restrictions: 1. The total amount of XP spent on Magic Items should not exceed 50% of the XP used for Class levels. Therefore, the most that could be spent on Magic Items is 6000xp (and 12001xp on character levels) 2. The number of Magic Items should not exceed the number of Class levels (a 4th level Magic User would be limited to 4 magic items.)

3. One "Item of Quality" would be allowed (Such as a Masterwork non-magical Long Sword +1 Damage) which would also deserve a backstory.

4. All other normal items would be allowed providing you have the encumberance capacity to carry it. Exotic Items would need DM approval (however, I may have drifted into 3rd edition...) For example: A human Cleric wielding a Dwarven Warhammer would require some explaining.

5. Coin carried would be up to 100gp per level of character. (determined based on Player's Handbook average prices for normal items)

1) Is the XP for an item = the XP cost to create an item?
2) Anything +2 or less for a weapon is legit?
