Stefan, thanks for the clarification!

Although some may think a kickstarter would be taking a step back I believe it would be a giant leap forward as it can provide the necessary influx of financial stability to support development of new sets/items both for the new and long-time collectors. We've all seen how projects on kickstarter, Reaper Bones is a perfect example, can be a huge success! I'm confident of DF's success and will support it. However, and as Stefan said, I will also pick up current sets and new releases as they become available...I learned my lesson early on when I didn't get the DOE R&P set and three years later finally did.

I don't believe I'm alone in thinking this way and anxiously await the "official" announcement from Stefan or Jeff.

Who's with me? ;)

Thanks for this great summary and your ongoing support. DF collectors can be sure that Stefan sticks with them. I've build up my own business here in Europe for the long term because I'm trusting in him. And yes - this despite that he sometimes even surprises me when I read something on these boards I hadn't heart before.
One aspect I have realized since I started. It is difficult to spread the news without a large marketing budget. I've generated several new European customers. But it is a slow and laborious task.
But there is something that always gets me back. The greatest reward in this job are the e-mails of new customers who purchase DF for the first time and are blown away when they unpack the very first set. Their first WOW that you can read from these e-mails when it is so much better to have in hands as it ever can be shown online. But unfortunately too many players have never seen DF or had the opportunity to have a piece in their hands.
I'm exited by the developments as it would help a lot if we can get new collectors into the fold. They are the ones who will push restocks and that way benefit all existing customers who don't have everything yet.
And they are also the ones who will ensure the community stays big enough for Stefan to justify new and ever better sets for us old guys.

I think a Kickstarter is a brilliant idea! I do believe (like Reaper's Kickstarter) you need to attract BOTH types of DF fans; the new and avid collector. Reaper had support levels of $1 to $100 which were very popular with new collectors like me. Of course for a DF newbie collector the price point would probably start at $50-75+shipping. The avid collector would probably be around the $200-$500 dollar donation range.

Stefan, I think that a Kickstarter with a well strategized "grass roots" and free marketing campaign for potential DF collectors would really work. However, there would have to be some serious ground work set up for the free PR strategy. You may have to reach out to all the right contacts like Wizards of the Coast, Paizo, gaming forums, etc., to help build share of voice prior to the Kickstarter launch. I bet a lot of these people would be willing to support such a great company like DF!

However, do you think you would need to have all the DF sets stocked during this find raising period? Do you think may lose your new customers if they come to this website and learn they have to wait 3-6 months for their product to be stocked?

Any way I can help you have it!

Heartily seconded. You need to make this appeal to ALL fans. Not taking advantage of your loyal customer base would be a shame. Plus we all want some cool limited edition strech goal goodies.

You could do a room and passage set ver 2.0. Great for newbies and what veteran collector couldn't use one more. And think of the potential for special pieces to added as strech goals. Drool.....

Great news about the Kickstarter. Anxious to see what the event will be. I've been a big fan and a loyal customer of DF for over a decade. I also have a bit of experience with Kickstarter. Our Kickstarer, Project Eternity, was such a fun experience and we raised a good amount of money, record amounts actually, for the project.

I'm starting a new D&D campaign next week with my co-workers over at Obsidian Entertainment (using DF of course) and we were just discussing how awesome your products are. Hit me with a PM if you have any questions about the Kickstarter process. We've got a pretty big following of Kickstarters now (something like 40,000 I think) and I'm sure we could help you spread the word, once you go live.

Take care, Stefan.

Welcome to the Forum Warduke.

Glad to hear of your success on Project Eternity. I am eager to get my hands on that game since I am also a backer of it :-)

Stefan,
I'm trying to put the DF rumors to some good use! So here goes my thoughts on the rumors floating around about the Castle, and new DF set?, DF minis, and a Kickstarter.
I see that launching a stackable Castle, also a brand new DF set, and maybe the metal Lizardmen mini would be an outstanding Kickstarter launch say in August 2013!

The minis could be the $25 level
A one time accessory set only available during this time for $50
The new DF set could be the $100 with optional pieces at $10, $25, $35
The stackable Castle the $200 with optional pieces at $10,$25, $35, and $50

Stefan what do you think of my ideas?

Thanks for picking up the thread again.

I would think at the current state we need to trust Stefan that he has come up with something great and novel. After all - this is what keeps us coming back here.

I guess it would help most to get ideas / connections about how to get the word out beyond the DF family.

The offer from Warduke for example sounds fantastic to me. That would be a really, really great help for a Kickstarter (and I hope Stefan/Jeff has contacted him or will do so before launch).

I will send out messages to my Twitter followers (all 15 of them) but that won't go very far. I hope I can do something in the Paizo Webpages as I'm known there at least a little bit.

But anyone here who has good connections / a large number of followers in the RPG area - be it via blog, Facebook or other means is likely someone who should be contacted.

Thanks everyone for your offers of help....we will need it pretty soon...

We are not yet making a castle although if this goes well, it is quite possible we will make a modular castle, but that is not our initial offering...

we have been planning this very carefully, studying how others have done theirs...I am confident it will be a success, and a lot of it will count on our supporters spreading the word to folks who collect miniatures or who play D&D like games and who always wanted to have 3-D dungeons but perhaps were too daunted to do so....we hope to win them over...our main goal here is to get more gamers into the miniature aspect of gaming...

I wish I had some contacts to help with spreading the word. I only know one person at Paizo and I'm figuring you have plenty of contacts there. I do frequent 10-12 other forums and will pass the word on to these forums when you launch the Kickstarter.

An hour ago in Dwarven Forge Facebook page:

"Dwarven Forge
We have a BIG announcement coming in March. I wish I could say more. I can't wait to say "Go!""

Is the kickstarter very near?
