Rabidfox has plans of picking up a nice slice of the Ainsty Sci-Fi pieces, and I have most of the Grendel ones. So this thread will be an ongoing process. I went by the game store on Thursday night and was able to acquire three more sets at $5 a pop, not to bad……Thank the gods for the discount bin.

Here’s everything before flashing.

Initial thoughts; I wish I had four more of each of these pieces. Their going to be nice for multi-level builds.

First I flash, then square everything up real nice on the disk-sander.

One of the first decisions that hand to be made was that one of the doors fit nicely being 2 wide.

While the other was 1.5 wide; no good for either a 2 passage or even a 1 if they come out with a narrow passage set for Sci-Fi.

The solution; sand down the back side of the door so it sits flatly against the wall, plus now it stands out in a room.

Everything primed-

The three colors used for color-matching to the Sci-Fi pieces in this order.

Everything dry-brushed-

I actually had one of the vehicles from the set painted sometime back, and it was used in a post-nuke game.

Since taking these pics I’ve almost finished the doors and the Med-lab, I’ll post some photos in a DF setting as soon as their done.

When did all of this become a challenge course? Oh well. Please remember that I will not have the Ainsty stuff for probably another two months. I am not the only one in our group waiting on a tax refund to make their part of the order; I think that about 70% of the group is.

You are a lucky devil IO. They barely have game stores here in Idaho, let alone discount bins at them. In all of Eastern Idaho (about 35-40% of the state) I can think of only four game stores with only two fairly small ones here in Idaho Falls. The largest store in the region is 60 miles away in Pocatello - university town - more call more gaming items there. There is a modified Hobbytown in Twin Falls, 100+ miles west of Pocatello. That is it until you get to Boise.

This state only has 1.36 million people in it while it is the sixth largest in geographic size. The largest city in the state has ~182,000 people in it and that is the state capital Boise over in the SW part of the state. There are only four or five actual cities in the state! City meaning an incorporated area with >50,000 population. This state has ~83,000 mi2 with 15.6 people/mi2. In contrast Florida has 17 million people with only ~54,000 mi2 with 296.4 people/mi2. Being posted here has been a drastic difference from either coast I have lived on.

Your pics seem to indicate that you have acquired Grendel stuff before. It looks like you have at least two of every set. Is this correct? Curiosity query, are these items the exact same terrain items that SimTac sells through their Kryomek U.S.A. WEB page? I ask because some of the descriptions just do not match up with those pics shown here.

It appears that the 1.5" doors are near to useless other than as an empty prop. Are the larger doors single or double sided? It just would be so much easier for everyone if the Sci-Fi hatches from DF would be sold singly!

Cargo doors are 3", 4", what?

You actually own an A.T.A.C. There have times I have wondered about getting some, but then either reality hit or the resources had to be used elsewhere. The A.T.A.C. is like the APC from Aliens, yes? Somewhat?

Need to go. I have the season’s creeping crud. I just want some rest. Good day all.

No challenge here, I was just feeling inspired after we discussed these pieces, and was just hoping to start a thread discussing and showing pics of both the Grendel and Ainsty Sci-Fi terrain items for the rest of the gang who may be interested in these little gems.

You are a lucky devil IO. They barely have game stores here in Idaho, let alone discount bins at them.

Yes, we are lucky here in South Florida. There are 3 gamestores in our county, 4 to the north in West Palm and about 6 in Miami/Dade. I’m also fortunate that my home gamestore’s owner is from the old-school, well connected, and regularly buys out closing stores throughout the country. (Passing on a nice discount to us)

But let me say something, I feel your lucky too. Idaho is beautiful, all those mountains, rivers, and forests you have to explore. And like you stated your “low population avoids the Rat Race mentality. Florida is changing especially down south. I envy you guys in more spread out areas.

Military?, and where are you from originally?

Funny, I didn’t notice that. I wasn’t even thinking about it in that way. Most of the pieces have been loose in a box for over a year. I guess you’re right.

Curiosity query, are these items the exact same terrain items that SimTac sells through their Kryomek U.S.A. WEB page? I ask because some of the descriptions just do not match up with those pics shown here.

Not sure about this question. I searched the site, but couldn’t find what you were talking about. Could you post a link?

It appears that the 1.5" doors are near to useless other than as an empty prop. Are the larger doors single or double sided?

No they look good in a room, plus you could put one on each side of a wall making a pass-through. All of the doors are double sided except for the “Cargo Bay doors.

Cargo doors are 3", 4", what?

Not sure, I’ll measure them later.

You actually own an A.T.A.C. There have times I have wondered about getting some, but then either reality hit or the resources had to be used elsewhere. The A.T.A.C. is like the APC from Aliens, yes? Somewhat?

I’d say so, definitely inspired.

Here’s what I’ve gotten done so far. Not quite as much as I wanted to last night, but I was tired. Anyway, the hardest part of the paint is almost finished, and the rest will flow alot faster. I’ll continue to post along the way.

If anyone else has any of these or the Ainsty pieces, or just has a comment, please feel free to post them. I’d like to see what you guys have done. L, I think MLV said you painted and posted some pics of these pieces? Could you re-post them here on this thread?

I am sick currrently so I must have taken your directness wrong. Sorry.

I hope that this thread will be a blast by time we are done.

We also have:
*extremely few quality museums - most of the rare museums are complete jokes in some hole in the ground/wall/etc.,
*the few libraries are all underfunded,
*no amusement parks - only city-slickers do that sort of thing I am told,
*little real culture (if it was not for the LDS people in the Eastern Idaho area there would be no symphony, live theatre, etc.) The rest of the folks always push the outdoors you were talking about 24/7 - after several trips the outdoors here gets a bit boring after my experiences around the world.
*you have to really watch what school district your child is in (not because of violence, but is there enough money in the district to provide a decent education? Too small of a tax base!),
*"rugged individualists" who feel Washington should only be there to hand them money and could not be convinced that paying taxes is actually a good thing (I think some of these people think there is a roadwork fairy, a water supply fairy, a fire department fairy, etc.). A guy, who gunned down two federal officers in cold blood, is still considered a folk hero by too many people here in this state. Federal agents all go armed since then and operate usually in at least twos, if not threes. Talk about the waste to the taxpayers pocketbook all because some folks think it is always open season on federal officers.
*woe be to any man here that does not think that the two greatest sports in the world are hunting and fishing! You are not a man's man then to many of these people! You are just a namby-pamby city-slicker. In the past I have "hunted" the most challenging "prey" on on this planet and who gives a care about the deer, etc. that cannot shoot back at you while you are hunting it! I do not! Additionally, I am so tired of hearing every last native Idahoan's hunting and fishing stories. After a while they all sound the same. Moreover, after a short while, who cares about the dead animal's head that is on their wall along with other assorted animal body parts.

Rabidfox wrote:Being posted here has been a drastic difference from either coast I have lived on.

Former. Federal service now.

Son of a Sergeant-Major. A little bit of every where. I claim California (where I was born and later graduated from high school at) and Maryland (where life is just cool and every where is really close - a three hour radius has access to everything worthwhile on the East Coast just about other than the highlights of Florida).

One thing this state definitely does not have that truly is beautiful is the ocean.
There is no landlubbing sunset that compares with the sun sinking into the sea!
Furthermore, there is no sunrise like the sun rising out of the ocean either!
I miss the ocean with its own unique noises and smells.
I have had my fill of desert and pine and all that comes with it.

Go down a little ways and you will see the listings without pics. Do not go past the craters which do have pics.

The reason I first asked was because SimTac has never posted a pic of them and they have done some Grendel items in the past.

Rabidfox wrote:It appears that the 1.5" doors are near to useless other than as an empty prop. Are the larger doors single or double sided?

The pass-through idea is manageable, but I would rather have doors in actual holes.

That wonderful-looking large cargo door is only single-sided - oh boo!
That makes the A51 door from Ainsty look even better!

Rabidfox wrote:Cargo doors are 3", 4", what?

Not sure, I’ll measure them later.

If that large Cargo Bay door is only single-sided, do not bother measuring it.

It does not have the side door though.
Have you picked up any of the other vehicles from the same series?

I am looking for some good grav tanks in the same scale as Vor for my North American Union army: Heavy Tank, MBT, APC, MLRS(8 tubes - 2 4s) and Attack VTOL.
Some of the tanks that Geo-Hex used to do for Ground Zero Games here in the U.S.A. would be great, but they now have to be acquired from the UK.
I am hoping you might now of a company on this side of the pond that has vehicles that will fit the bill.
Any recommendations?

Wow! I'm very jealous! I really want more Grendel SF stuff, but I'm saving up at the moment. Fantasy has been eating up my minis budget, and I'm on a bit of a dragon kick now (blame Todd McFarlane)

Still, you have two of the sets I've been drooling over since the DF stuff showed -- the med bay and the cyber bar! The cyber bar looks like a great place for a SW game, not quite an accurate Mos Eisley but still a great setting for all the funky Fringe aliens.

And your paint job is fantastic! I've been taking the easy way out, just black primer and drybrushed silver, but that white on the med bay stuff looks great. If/When I do buy that stuff, I'll probably copy your approach here rather than go with more silver. Some variety is always nice!

I did post a TON of pics before, lots of Grendel stuff featured. I took some down to make room for more, around the time we got hacked. I'll scroll through my photo libary for some new pics and post them some time soon. Part of me thinks I'll be on a pretty heavy SF kick in May, the new SW film will put me in the mood, even though it will almost certainly be a terrible excuse for a movie (sorry, prequel fans).

These guys are in the UK, but I’ve never seen such and array of amazing 25-28mm future type vehicles, I don’t know of one here with this variety. Take a look anyway.

<edit> I dont know why the link isn't working? But do a search for Old Crow Models, it shouldn't be that hard to find.

L,

Thanks for the complements. I like what you’ve done as well, and I really like that set up in the third pic. It reminds me of the control room of a Star Destroyer.

I agree white does look the best on the Med-Bay stuff, it gives that clean medical look. Here’s a few pics of the Cryogenics stuff I finished last night.

IO,

I "Got" your Meaning right away, and agree that the Grendal/Ainsty Almost Desreves it's own Topic for Clarity, since the Discussion was about how these Kewl Pieces would/Could be used with DF.

Thanks for Posting the Pics of the different Steps involved, seeing the Process unfolding is always very interesting to me, and potentially will be useful to myself or Others...

I Like the 1.5" Door better than I thought I would, and I think it comes down to this, Since the Med-bay objects all stand out away from the Wall a little bit anyway, the Door does not look out of Place. If all of the Furniture was free standing (Which would have been my First Choice, and Hopefully DF will do), then the 1.5" door would have appeared "Bulkier"...

I Really like the Med-bay equipment's Color scheme a lot, and I thought the Monitor Details looked pretty Kewl as well...

The Cryo-chamber stuff on the Otherhand looks really Stark, and Reminds me more of some kind of Police Vehicle, (Because of the White and Blue and Black)... Don't Get me Wrong the Paint Job is Very nicely executed, Just a personal observation on the Colors...

RabidFox,

Sorry to hear that you are feeling under the weather, I would that you recover swiftly.

As to Idaho, I have never been, but I have often thought about/ Fantasized about the Idea of Moving to a Location that was more inland, primarily because of Reduced Costs for Land Purchases. In the Past one of my Concerns was being able to find Like Minded individuals for Gaming and the Like. When I was Stationed at Fort Knox I got to feel the Full impact of living in a Culture that did not Cater to These particular Hobbies so much, and it was a little sad.

Ironically since then I have Moved to Florida, and live in a Town with a lot of Transient Youth, and little in the way of a solid Gaming Community capable of sustaining Dedicated Hobby Stores. So there is still a Vacum when it comes to Game Stores. That having been said, I also recognize that gaming in general has become much more mainstream, so I have High hopes that when the time comes for another move, that I will be able to Find Gamers and Game Stores somehow or another. Gamers are easier to find in my experience then are Stores. So Luckily there is the Internet...<Grin>...

Law,

Have you added some details to some of these Grendal Computers?

Thank you for the well wishes. We will see how long it takes me to throw this bug.

Unfortunately, the idea that land values go down as you move inland does not always work everywhere. Sun Valley, Idaho, is an example of how that idea does not work. Then again folks like Bruce Willis have made this town their primary residence. Harrison Ford, before Callista Flockhart, lived primarily two hours away just outside Jackson, Wyoming. He even worked for Teton County Search & Rescue since he was a licensed helo pilot and owned a helo that was large enough to use for rescues. One time he went out on a mission and helped rescue a family that was trapped due to a rock fall. The gradeschool aged son in the family kept telling his folks that "Indiana Jones" was flying the helo and they told him to be quiet with his stories. When they went to thank the helo pilot for their rescue, the mother nearly fainted right there on the tarmac because the pilot was indeed Harrison Ford. I know this story because I know the flight engineer that was on that mission. Anyway, there are several celebrities who own homes of various sizes including homes like Ford's rather large ranch. They all drive the prices of property sky high in areas here in Eastern Idaho.

Are you saying with the "transient youth" comment that you live in a college town? I have lived in several of those and have never found trouble in getting gaming going. Then again, I am not a RPG gamer; I only play miniature wargames and such. Maybe that is why there is no problems for me in that sort of environment.

Furthermore, most of the colleges and universities I have been around have gaming clubs of some variety as well.

Moreover, I would say the best gaming shoppes I have been in were in university towns. I will admit it is a feast or famine environment for a gaming store. When the students get their financial aid, the stores reap a major windfall. One store owner said that sales in September and January represented 70-75% of his sales for the year. The rest of the year is a struggle.

As far as towns around here like Idaho Falls gaming is hard to get going. Only card games like Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokémon are doing well here. RPGs are not and the only miniature wargame doing fairly well are the ones from GW's stable and even those are not hopping like the card games.

Need to go. It took way too long to do even this message with my current energy levels. Good luck everyone, with your gaming.

I have some of the Grendal bits, i like them for the most part since many of the pieces like the floors on say the comand chair are pretty close to the right width if they had different backs, and or if the floors were sqaure and of the right size or then they would be much better. I am almost tempted to try to make some Miliput spacers to get them to be the full size of a normal DF wall section (both height and floor), to get some more walls etc out of them... i may try that this weekend...

Rabid,

Man, I hope you’re feeling better. I reading your post and all I’m hearing is sniffles. Get well soon.

MLV,

Thanks for the complements, and I see your point about the Crio-pods. It may be just the angle of the pics. Check out the pics below and give me your opinion.

Well, we start breaking ground on the new location today. We’ll be over there tonight doing demo into the wee hours of the morning. We hope to have the place ready to begin re-construction by early next week. The whole project will take about two months in total to finish we’re guessing, including the move which will be a monster in itself.

Anyway, here are a few pics of all the Medi-lab and Crio-pods together in a larger room.

PS. I’m still going to be working on these pieces, the painting stations will be the last to go, so I’ll be painting when I get a moment or two and be posting to this thread.
