TOPIC: I know what the equivalent of sci-fi caverns should be

OK, so I've thought long and hard about this, and I have come to a conclusion.

After watching a lot of sci-fi movies, including (especially) the Star Wars movies.

And after looking at a lot -- well, a little -- SF terrain (besides DF, there only is a little out there!) Mainly cardstock stuff.

I know what I want for the next big leap in DF settings. Not an alien world or anything like that, though it might make sense. It'd have to just be a variation on caverns, anyway, and not very sci-fi.

Nope, what I want for the sci-fi equivalent of caverns is more specific. I call it the "equivalent of caverns" because the cavern sets were, for the dungeon setting, a whole new style of piece, but one that could be used with the dungeon pieces and not look bad. Plus, of course, they can be used on their own. What I'm thinking of is a whole different kind of sci-fi piece, but one which would work with the current version.

What I'd want -- smooth panels on floors and walls. They'd be tiles or panels, so you could keep the "grid" on the floor. But they'd be smooth.

Looking at the Death Star or the Falcon, looking at the hangars and things other companies make, looking at Star Trek or 2001, there's just a lot of sci-fi settings out there with smooth shiny black floors. Or grey. Or kinda white.

I guess it's more like the "palace" or "above ground" setting some of us have been asking for the fantasy world than it is like the caverns, but in any case it's the same basic principle: you could make an entirely different kind of setting with the new pieces, or you could integrate them into the old for funky combinations (just like the cavern pieces)

I wouldn't want it any time soon. I still want the underground lake and river set, and I want a few more sci-fi expansions that flesh out what we've got a bit more before I feel ready to move on to something else. I really would love to see some long walls to go with the big floor pieces, and I would also love to see furniture. (I also realized another cool element that could borrow from the basic ideas in the fantasy setting -- lighting! wall-mounted light fixtures like the torches, and free-standing lights like the candleabras!)

Yeah, now is way too soon to be thinking about this. But my mind goes off in a hundred directions, I can't help it. I think when the time comes for a quantum leap like the cavern sets, a whole new approach to sci-fi just like they were a whole new approach to fantasy, I think that the less "industrial" approach would be most welcome.

As Much As I Would Love as Many "Alternate" Settings as Possible... (And Admittedly you Already Stated that this would be a Far Future Project)... I still Think a lot could be gained by Having "Theme" Packs... That having been said (So that DF knows EXACTLY what I really Want...<Grin>...), I Have to Say that if there were a "Qualification" on the Usefulness of the Current Sci-Fi Sets, then it would be that the Sets are "Retro" and Not So Slick or Modern... (But Bloody well Gorgeous... So No Offense intended if the DF Staff is Listening :)...) So I think you are on Target with Wanting Some Options...

Exactly -- I think you've picked up on precisely my point (and said it much quicker!)

On the one hand, as much as I love the industrial stuff, I'd love some ultramodern sleek smooth rounded tiles stuff.

On the other hand, I DO love the industrial stuff, and I'd rather add to my options there for the time being than stop and start yet another setting. Even if they are in compatible themes, there's something to be said for letting me finish THIS before starting THAT.

That last argument is really important, especially for a company like Dwarven Forge!

A varied and complete selection of pieces for the present environment is the best inducement for getting into the habit in the first place, which in turn will generate the customer base (and the financial go-ahead) for a compatible second or even third style.

I still haven't decided on the SF set yet, but with a couple of more sets available I probably will (and I really should get hold of what I need for the fantasy setting first, anyway - hopefully the Wicked Additions sets will have arrived today!).

...This should not be construed as a damper on the discussion, though, as I would really love different takes on the system - for example a totally alien environment for all the bugs out there or a more derelict and battle-blackened version of the present set! :-)

Willypold,

I Feel very strongly on this Part of the Discussion... As I Think a HUGE part of Keeping things "Fresh" and interesting is in Previewing upcoming Projects and Letting us Whip ourselves, (And Maybe some of the Less Vocal Readers out there as well?), in to a Frenzy of Consumer, Pack Animal Hunger... If this Is Done with Stuff that is Useable with Existing Sets SOOO Much the Better...

You Know I was very dubious (And I have Mentioned this before on these boards), about the First Cavern Set when it initially Came out... I was Very Excited at the Store that DF had come out with a New Set... But When I Got Home and saw the "Four" inch floors I was really disappointed... (I Had Not really Discovered the Usefulness of Larger Floors yet)... Then When I Started Playing with the Sets (I Bought Two), and Just Figureing out Different Layouts... I was Blown away... I mean the GIGANTICAL (My Wifes Word), Difference in Having Larger Pieces that were still in Scale with the Smaller Stuff... Was Awesome! DF had Literally Re-invented themselves with the Release of that Set, without Making the Prior Investments of their Fans Obsolete... And I Think in a Sense the Sci-Fi set is the Same Thing... But with the introduction of Smaller, More Shelf-able Boxed Sets... In Pretty New Packageing... Being Released at a reasonably Quick Pace... It may "Seem" this is a Starting from Scratch Environment... But in a sense it is a "Theme" pack of sorts I Guess...

But I suppose more than Anything what I am Saying is Bring on the New Gear... And I Want More Previews... And LOTS of Well Developed, well Supported Sets... I Think that it is Very Kewl that there is an Effort to Come Up with "New" Sets at the Same time as an obvious re-invention is taking place... What does anything I've said have to do with Anything at all? Not Much... (So much for Any sort of Succinct Point this Time Around)... But I have to say that as Much as I have ALWAYS loved MM and Caverns, I Have a little more Confidance in DF at the Moment to Bring us Great new Stuff then I Might have a Year ago...

With the items released in the Starter, Passage and Alpha and the soon-to-be released Beta set, DF REALLY NEEDS to start looking at generic sci-fi items to place in the terrain. Items (furniture, etc.) needed for an ops, a bunkroom, a wardroom, an engineering/power core, a sickbay/lab, a vehicle/mech bay, etc. Our entrance into Sci-Fi sets has been delayed by the lack of this kind of support. For now, I and my wargaming group can play just fine in the original MM sets, both fantasy and especially cavern. Unless there is sci-fi terrain support made, there is no inducement for us to start collecting the sci-fi MM sets. For now without such inducements, we are happy collecting the Cavern sets which work beautifully in any genre.

RabidFox,

Point Taken for Sure... I Am Heartened (As Stated Previously...<Grin>...), at the Realatively Quick Releases of additional Sci-Fi Sets thus Far... And as we have Seen in the Previews the Beta will have a Console at least... So Hopefully Future Sets will also... And I am With you I Want Kewl Gear to Fill my Sci-Fi with!

How about the Cavernous passages and Caves could be a play on the Alien Nest theam? You know the strands of those secreations "varous thicknesses" and maybe an open egg or two srcatch marks and the like....

Hmm... How about just making an accessory set with Aliens type spore eggs and other bits and stuff to create an alien environment for the cavern and passages?
