The only set I've heard of beyond the first two is the Alpha Expansion. This one will have pillars, ramps, and (I think) more floor sections.

Does anyone have more details about this one, or any others that might be on the way?

The new expansion will be out in October with a floor related theme -- with big floor pieces, pillars and ramps. See below:

Woo-hoo! That's what I'm talking about!

Those look great. Off the top of my head, here are some thoughts:

1. First, I noticed last night that the new sci-fi stuff stacks a lot better than the dungeon stuff. The dungeon floor pieces don't look right if you pile them up -- but the sci-fi pieces look fantastic! I put a bunch of floor pieces in a concentric square, then in the corner I put the diagonal floorpiece, to make a kind of stepped dias kinda space. With the designs on the "underside" of the floor, it made for a great looking area.

2. Combined with that, the new ramp and columns seem to be great for stacking as well. Putting rooms on the old red columns was fun, but there wasn't much room to move around. In this style, however, that seems to make sense. The exposed wiring and general messiness of the columns, combined with the cramped spacing, will really help make it seem like this is a crawlspace or something, with the ramp leading up to the main area and the columns and stacked floorpieces beneath looking like some maintenance area. And...

3. Add the new floor pieces to the top, with the removeable hatches, and you've got a really great environment!

It's really looking like the sci-fi sets are going to be far more 3-D than the fantasy sets. I find that the fantasy sets look good when built in levels, but the areas under the raised levels tend not to be fun to play. It's too much trouble to remove all the top pieces, and if you are using smaller pieces (and the largest floor piece still isn't that big if you want a very large upper level) it requires so much support underneath that it renders it unplayable.

So the fantasy stuff gives you great tiered levels, but you only ever play on the surfaces.

With THIS stuff, on the other hand, it looks like the underside is going to be really cool. It'll still be just as cramped, but this time it will make more sense and be part of the fun, getting into the heart of the ship/station/satellite/whatever.

At first, I was hoping that sci-fi stuff wouldn't distract you guys from the fantasy setting, but now that I'm seeing all this, I'm kinda thinking "Well, we HAVE had fantasy settings exclusively for five years or so now. . . what would be wrong with taking a break?"

I still want that underground lake and passage set, but beyond that (and of course the supercool floor set) I think I'd like to see much more for the sci-fi setting next year.

Aw

Hell

Yeah

:D

I love the removeable floor panels (never thought I'd be smuggling myself in them!) Looks like more great work, guys!

Will you have any of these pieces on display at GenCon?

My guess would be $50 again. Seems like nothing is really going to be less than that, and if you compare to the passage set, it seems that this expansion includes about as much.

In general, I like the fact that DF is making smaller sets for less, so you can buy two for the old price and get a lot more. You can also expand your collection in smaller increments -- I've never wanted to buy another cavern set, but if there were a $50 or $60 one with only half the pieces, I might be tempted to get that.

I still do wish they were just slightly cheaper. I realize DF needs to be profitable, and I hope they get offensively rich so they can keep making great stuff, but I also see the dangers of "sticker shock" Even I was a little uncomfortable spending $50, and I've been a fan for years. Some people, I fear, are simply going to be turned off by the price.

I have to wonder if it'd be terribly unworkable to sell these at $40 or even $45. It isn't much of a markdown, but there's a big psychological impact to seeing "FIFTY DOLLARS" that isn't there at 45. (same principle as the difference between $20 and $19.95)

For me, I'll still get 'em. But it might make the difference between getting them 2 or 3 times or only getting them once. (after all, one set for $50 or two for $80 or even $90, the cumulative impact is noticeable)

You're probably right on the price. I just hope it's not higher.

As for the cost in general, you're actually getting fewer pieces for the money with the sci-fi set, but I think the new packaging and the ease of storage that comes with it is worth the little more I'm spending. And, like you, I'm much more apt to buy multiple sets at lower price points, even though I might be spending more in total than I would on larger sets (my brain tends to shut down when it thinks of spending more than $100 on any one gaming item.)

And I'm guessing the only way they're going to get cheaper is if they make more at a time. And the only way they'll make more at a time is if they sell more at a time. I really hope the lower price point is going to help do that.

$50 is a good price point.

At $50, I'm more likely to buy a set on impulse.
