TOPIC: New Stock?

New Stock? 6 Years, 8 Months ago
After initially thinking DF's Sci/Fi sets wouldn't work for my AT-43 gaming decided that the Alpha set would give me enough flooring. Problem is the sets I am interested in (Alpha, starter, and 6" walls) are all out of stock at fire sale prices. I know this has been discussed elsewhere on the forum, but looks like maybe DF Sci/Fi didn't sell and so they dumped the product and don't plan on restocking. Tell me it ain't so! :)

Kenneth -

Since Stefan is planning a Sci-Fi accessories set for either Spring or Summer 2008, I don't THINK Df is dumping the line. The problem is that Sci-Fi is such a wide-spread genre, it's damn-near impossible to create a single line of 'scenery' for it, especially interiors. Stefan and Tony did a pretty good job with what we have, but it's much more generic than a lot of gamers wanted - it doesn't exactly 'fit' Trek, SW, Aliens (although it's close there) B5 (another 'almost'), Galactica, or any of the other "mainstream" sci-fi universes. It's GREAT with the RPG-style games, where your imagination is called into play, such as Mechwarrior or anything in the Honor Harrington universe. But there aren't as many minis available for them - if any. Mechs are a dime a dozen, but Mech drivers aren't. And if you can find me a Sphinx treecat, I'll take him!

OK, I'll check back from time to time, then.

Thanks for the reply, Jim!

What Alpha is not out of Stock, i was looking at it yesterday. Was planning on putting in another 1 or 2 with the Chasam sale, and i am now looking at the page where it lists at least 50 of the Alpha and Beta in the drop down list. Passage lists only 14, Long walls and Starter are out of stock, though.

Just wondering, have the Sci-Fi starter sets been re-stocked since late 2007?

If not, is there any idea when they will be re-stocked.

Thanks

Steve,

I haven't seen anything else since Gamma (the Accessories), and I don't know the status of the other sets. I think the biggest problem is that Sci-Fi moves slower than most of the DF lines - it's like I said in my reply to Kenneth. Sci-Fi has very little in the way of mainstream "generic" shipboard 'terrain'; most everything is highly specialized, and Trek looks nothing like SW looks different from Galactica is different from B5 will never match up with Aliens, etc, etc. So Stefan can't design ONE Sci-Fi line that works with all of it, and trying to cover all the bases would NOT be profitable (it would also get all the lawyers in an uproar!) and we don't need DF to go bankrupt NOW. So Sci-Fi moves along slowly, while Stefan, Jeff, and probably Tony C. do an occasional set to keep it going in a generic fashion. Oh, well; something is better than nothing, and it IS still the best around!

Not really sure about that. It will depend on finances...maybe we could create a whole other composition for the basic set and perhaps even add something new to make it appetizing for existing owners?

This is an honest answer...We shall see...

Works for me, Stefan! But then, just about anything you do usually does. That's why I'm usually BROKE! (but smiling in my poverty) Just don't go bankrupt to keep us happy, please! I personally would rather be a TINY BIT disgruntled and still be able to get DF, than be joyously giggling and suddenly lose all the goodies we get from you; ya know what I mean?

Thanks for the feedback Stefan, I appreciate the update.

Being a new collector of the Sci-Fi line, my initial enquiry was out of necessity.

Although I now own (an initial quantity of) 10 Sci-Fi sets, there was no way for me to purchase a set that contains even a single (square) corner or 2x2" floor piece.

I do completely understand that the recent priority appears to have been given to restocks of the various (MM and other) sets without the bow-tie connectors. It makes perfect sense.

With that being said, I now hope that once that has been accomplished, either a re-stock or redesign of the Sci-Fi starter set, (that includes those essential pieces) would once-again be made available. With the pieces in question not being available in any other way (either as singles or in other sets), I would suggest that in this case there may be a balance between allowing market demand to redevelop and discouraging growth within an associated product (Sci-Fi) line due to the unavailability of basic and essential elements.

Please note that my previous enquiry regarding the time/date of the last restocks was not a complaint but actually an enquiry of opportunity.

In fact, I was glad to learn that has been a while since the last re-stock of such an essential set. It would support the argument that after approximately two years since it has last been available, (if that is the case) then some market demand for these has had an opportunity to redevelop. To further support this I would cite the present lack of supply available in the secondary/resale market, it appears to have thoroughly dried up -much to my dismay.

The final reason for my enquiry was that should DF be planning a re-stock of the set/pieces, as long as I know they are coming then I would gladly wait (even months) to purchase the 5-6 sets that I will need directly from here/DF instead of scrounging a used set or two if/whenever possible from elsewhere.

Thanks again

Steve

Dear Steve,

Yes, I think it's pretty crucial to get some of the "basic" pieces back in stock even if it's just breaking even for us..otherwise of course, how can we expect to get new customers? I really like the Sci-Fi Line and really want it to continue to grow, it's really fun to design for...but of course, the most important is to stay in business and to be careful with our funds (especially in this financial climate) so, honestly, I am not sure exactly when we can re-stock what will probably be a minimum of 600 Sets which we will have to sit on for 2-4 years in all likeleyhood...we must hope that this is a good year for us, and so-far it has been good thanks to everyone and the strong sales of the ROTA, hopefully, the next few sets will be the same and then I think we may be able to squeek in the Sci-fi...

Thank you for the consideration.

Btw,

Might I ask that should the (future) production of such a set be decided/confirmed, would you please announce it and don't keep it as a surprise.

Personally, such an announcement would prompt me to also order another five of the existing S-F sets once I know that the starter-type sets are actually on their way to being produced.

I mention this as it may also prompt others to order some of the remaining Sci-Fi sets while they too remain available.

In conclusion, thank you Stefan for your responses to my enquiries. They are always appreciated.

is the starter set back in stock? in the online store it says that it will be restocked on September 9th today is Sept 15th

I haven't been here in a while but I've been playing around with the sci fi sets I have already and was thinking of adding to them. Is that Sept. 9th restock notice current? or something that was left over from previous years and there really isn't any re stock?

I'm probably going to place an order for some of the other sci fi set that are in stock within the next few week. should I wait?

Thanks for any info
