Hi!

I have been interessted in Dwarven Forge terrain for some time and bought my first pieces today! I have not seen the stuff in real life so I did a small order, Alpha Expansion Set and Magical Weapons & Armor (not the best way to start but the online store I used did not have many items). I plan to get SF-starter sets so I can use it with Star Wars minis. How many starters would be enough for smaller games?

Welcome aboard Papa Troll.

Sci-Fi Starter Set will give you a coverage area of about 60 square inches, 15 peices worth that have 4 square inches on each peice. Alpha (which you ordered has 36 square inces, and 24, for about 60 square inches of coverage. for it and can provide some of the nice open areas (if you are using this for the WotC minis) like in the center of Deathstar map, Munnilist (just add the collumns from Alpha for the center) or any of the landing bays.
The RotS map is 19x30, or 570 square inches, one starter set will get you about 1/10 of the area of that map, the Alpha you ordered covers another 1/10. I would go with 3 Sci-Fi Starter Sets minimum to get 180 squares of coverage, maybe another Alpha for 120, giving you about 50% of the area of that map. Throw in a couple of the 6" Long Sci-Fi Walls (2) for 24 each, which will help to enclose the Alpha (2 of those are pretty good of enclosing the floor space of an Alpha) and will give you 48 square inches.

To cover the area of pretty close to that of one of the maps i'd go with
4 of the SKU: SF-004-B3 - 6" Long Sci-Fi Walls (2) 96 square inches
2 SKU: SF-003 Sci-Fi Alpha Expansion Set 120 square inches
4 SKU: SF-001 Sci-Fi Starter Set 240 square inches
or 456 square inches of coverage that gets 80% of the RotS map.

Since many of the WotC maps have pits, or holes this should be enough to be pretty close to the area to cover one of the WotC maps (the smallest but hey you can always buy more later), and will give you some items for cover/scenery (the collumns, and the ramps

If you want a really smaller game do 2 of the long walls and 2 of the starters, as the first order to get about 50% of the area, and so you can get the feel of using SW minis with DF etc

Beta is cool and will give you lots of long walls, some windows, and curved walls, (for 80 square inches of coverage, and 4 more doors) but the passages will be a bit of a waste, if you are planning to use this to run the Skirmish pretty close to the WotC rules the passage sets will be the least usefull. But the 80 square inches of Beta with the 456 will give you 95% of the area, allow for a faster build (with loads of long walls you can drop, and some fun shapes (curved walls and portals/windows for seeing into other areas for LOS etc.).

Hope you have fun with it.

That directed at me L?

Just 4 cases, only missing about 6, trying to trade for the last ones, placed first at the Milford Release.

REALLY like the set for RPG, LOADS and LOADS of Fringe, many are Jabba-esque, come Nov. when we stop the SW game for a bit to do another system for a time i will be bringing much of the DF Sci-Fi home and be setting up sets at home for the fun of it, maybe even take some to my FLGS to run games in and promote DF.

Welcome Papa Troll,

It is great to have another Sci-Fi gamer on-board.
There are too few of us here.
The more of us here and speaking will mean that we will get more items to finish up our Science Fiction Master Maze system.

As far as acquisitions, I second all that GS said.
Plus, I will say you should build on top of those recommendations by also acquiring Cavern Master Maze as well.
That way you can play "outside" but underground as well as inside a facility on the surface or in space as you would with Science Fiction Master Maze.
The additional plus for Cavern Master Maze is that you can combine it with Science Fiction Master Maze to do underground facilities as well.

Best wishes in your gaming.
Keep your head down!

Thanks all for the help, it is very nice with a message board with so many friendly people! I will have great use of Ghenghis Ska answer when I plan my next order. I think I will begin slowly, order 1-2 sets a time (just bought a Bengal kitten, very cute but not cheap). I will also try to locate some long SCI-FI walls, they seems to be very useful.

Papa Troll -

Welcome to the DF Sci-Fi section!
We're a sometimes Strange group, but generally friendly. RabidFox* and Ghenghis Ska will tell you I occasionally get . . . professorial, but that's just my "Train the Trainer" training showing through. Ignore me with dignity, and you'll survive just fine!

I highly suggest you grab as many Sci-Fi Starters and Betas as you can find and afford; they are vital to large setups. Also look at Alphas, because of the 4x6 and 6x6 floor pieces. I hate to admit it, because I own 6 sets, but the Passages set IS the least useful - unfortunately, because the workmanship in them is as high quality as the rest of the sets. However, IF you are doing Sci-Fi Undergrounds (bunker-style starbase stuff), they can work out well. Just don't bother with them for starships or normal buildings.
Tony Colasante, AKA Tony Griffon on the eBay circuit, makes EXCELLENT accessory and add-on pieces for DF Sci-Fi. He is a former scupltor at ArmorCast. His 4-Way, T-Intersection, and Corner passage inside floor fillers (used to fill in the corners of the Passage pieces so they can be used as building-style floors) are excellent, they EXACTLY match the look and feel of the Sci-Fi floors, and are darned cheap, too! Their only problem is that you must paint them yourself - and matching DF paints can be a royal PitA, if you get my drift.
JF Miniatures also makes some good accessories for DF Sci-Fi, but RabidFox*, GS, and I have lately been agitating heavily (well, the Foxman has been doing it for what seems like years, but we don't hold that against him - too much!) for a DF Sci-Fi Furniture and Accessory set, and it's starting to look like the Sci-Fi Gamma set MAY be that set - we HOPE!! (Stefan, are you listening here??)

And that's about it, Papa T. Again, welcome to the forum and the collections.

See ya!

Seeing as you are in Sweden not sure if you have these exact things, but you may have a local similiar item that can tide you over till you find some stuff, and are pretty eas to make.

One of the things i tend to think of that makes a setting Sci-Fi, Modern, or Fantasy is what is in the setting a Computer terminal looks out of place in Fantasy, just as a clunky rough hewn wooden table can look out of place in Space station. So i wanted to get some more modern chairs for my games, and make some stuff that look the Jedi Council room etc, so i found something called Woodsies www.creative-wholesale.com/woodsies.htm

the Circles, Squares and Rectangles can glue them together to form some nice tables, chairs, or even larger cabinates etc. that have a smoother look and finish to them than rought hewn wood. Paint them up and they look nice as a metal cabinate, or sturdy simple chair and plain table. Some of the more interesting shapes can give you more interesting tabels or other things.

Also oddly the Smallest circle in the circles set is the same size as the base of WotC Tiny Miny, the next largest up is the same size as a small mini's base, and the Laregest circle is just a smidge off from the size of a Huge base... Dont think anything matchs a Medium or Large, but then other companies make "real" bases that work for those. Just a point of refrence for customizers, or people who rebase things (like Wizkid stuff)

Good tip! Never thought I would look for that kind of stuff at a Panduro shop, but now I will!

Papa Troll and any other Swede around – I've seen similar stuff at Panduro Hobby, and I'll see what can be found tomorrow. (It's a chain of stores catering to various crafts and hobbies.)

Hey willypold, do you know the story behind hawkmoon's absence?
hawkmoon was here from Sweden as well.
hawkmoon has not posted in over four months; not that hawkmoon posted often with only 48 posts placed, but hawkmoon is missed.
