TOPIC: Year of Sci-Fi
#16712
Year of Sci-Fi 8 Years, 1 Month ago
I read on here in two places that 2007 should be the year of Sci-Fi...
To which I say, fair enough!
Rabid Fox made these recommendations

Gamma [large quantity of furnishings];
Delta [Advanced Builder-style set - maybe even a double layer set?]
Epsilon [more terrain - there is a huge list of stuff over on these threads:

My Suggestion would be as follows...
Gamma: Furnishing. Probably a smaller box filled with 10-20 items, representing the basic stuff needed for a starship/base

Delta: Advanced Builder.... Yes, and maybe throw in some simple transition pieces to the caverns, since it does seem that the Cavern sets are the one genre of MM that the "pure" Sci-Fi fans purchase....

Epsilon: Sci Fi Traps? I don't know... Is that something people are interested in? Perhaps Sci-Fi obstacles/ disasters would be better... damaged doors, fried computers, hull breaches, acid leaks....

Now, my only concern would be, is Sci-Fi enough of a money maker to sustain DF for a whole year by itself? Or do the other lines make more money? Some might argue Sci-Fi will become a better seller overall once it has more sets to support it. Time will tell.

If that is a problem then perhaps 2 Sci-Fi and 1 or 2 other sets would be a better path....

But, overall, I agree, get some more Sci-Fi out there, whatever the market will bear...

I am glad that both Law and Celtchief agree that 2007 needs to focus on the Science Fiction Master Maze; there is just so much more that can be done with it to make it a successful product.
I hope many others here also feel so inclined.

I agree with Celtchief on basically everything he posted here, but:
My Suggestion would be as follows...
Gamma: Furnishing. Probably a smaller box filled with 10-20 items, representing the basic stuff needed for a starship/base

No, NO NO!!
This must be a full set of approximately 40-50 items at a price of ~$100.
At worse, break the furnishings into three sets, all concurrently released, at ~$35 a set.

Repeatedly, from those who actually think that both Dwarven Forge and Science Fiction Master Maze are still around, this large of a release is a necessary action to restore Science Fiction Master Maze's pulse back to where a defibrillator is not needed.
The number of gamers I speak to that think that Dwarven Forge has gone out of business and/or Science Fiction Master Maze has been officially discontinued is actually amazing.

Fiddy summed up the needs of the Gamma Set fairly well with this comment of his on a old poll thread:
Engineering (hopefully several generic computer consoles, 'warp coils', and tubes)
Armory (with crates, missile racks, guns on walls, maybe lockers?)
Command (chairs, consoles (different from engineering), screens)
Crew Quarters (beds, lockers, tables)
Repair Bay (crane, parts pile, tools)
Sickbay (med-couch, stasis chamber)

That is not all I would like, but it would present a good beginning.

Let me re-place the threads that Celtchief did not include in his posting so that everyone can go and review what folks have said they wanted.
These threads give sizeable lists of requested Science Fiction Master Maze items:
www.dwarvenforge.com/dwarvenforums/viewtopic.php?id=994
&
www.dwarvenforge.com/dwarvenforums/viewtopic.php?id=741

I sincerely hope that Dwarven Forge will take their successes of 2006 and use them in 2007 to bring Science Fiction Master Maze into at least close, if not full, parity with mainline Fantasy Master Maze.
Full Sets Gamma, Delta and Epsilon are really needed in 2007 so as to prove that Science Fiction Master Maze is not dead, and that Dwarven Forge is serious about science fiction gaming.
I am not asking for an exclusively Science Fiction Master Maze year folks, but I am asking for a profound emphasis.

RabidFox* says it best:

"I am not asking for an exclusively Science Fiction Master Maze year folks, but I am asking for a profound emphasis."

I have to agree on this one (darn it, RF*, I thought we agreed NOT to do this!), Sci-Fi needs a significant boost for 2007. DF must not concentrate exclusively on Sci-Fi, or ANY ONE segment, but on the entirety of 3D INTERIOR terrain, be it SF, DoE, Dungeons, or Caverns. Caverns have received 2 EXCELLENT upgrades with the river and the lake; DoE is supposedly getting WA this fall. Sci-Fi actually got the Beta set in the Spring (which it drastically NEEDED to survive). 2007 IS the year to focus primarily, but NOT totally, on Sci-Fi and original Dungeons; they should EACH get 1-2 add-ons, even if one of the Dungeon sets is nothing more than Narrow Passages revival. Let Caverns and DoE fight it out here in the forums NOW to see which one gets a major add-on in 2007.
After all, regardless of what Stefan creates, if Jeff can't sell it, DF can't profit from it. No profit, no growth. No growth, no company. No company, no DF goodies.
So c'mon, guys; let's do some non-scientific, real-wrold market research here and find out what the majority of DF users want, and then DO IT! So we can BUY IT! And you can SELL IT and MAKE MONEY!! So DF can Survive and Grow! And make MORE COOL STUFF for us to BUY!

Anyone see a continuing thread of thought here? Like, make stuff people want so DF can sell it and make more money to make more stuff people want, and on, and on, and on?

Am I boring anyone here, yet? Or am I preaching to the choir?

See ya!

Ooh I've been quoted. :)

I'd love to see several sci-fi sets put out in 2007, though my wallet will likely disagree... especially after the beating it has taken in getting the rivers and lakes sets (I really didn't want to miss the chance in case they sell out and don't get re-run for a while)

I'm guessing that at least part of the reason the 'Sci-Fi Master Maze is discontinued' rumor was so strong was due to the huge sale that DF had on Sci-Fi last year. Usually you don't see sales like that unless someplace is closing shop or discontinuing a line (at least in my limited experience).

I do think splitting the furnishings into multiple sets is probably a good way to go. I'm sure there are some pieces that I'm going to want a larger number of than others (and I'm guessing the same is true of other people as well). I'd even suggest we set up a forum so people can easily trade pieces if DF does go the route of a large furnishings set. In an ideal world (mine at least) we'd be able to buy the furnishings loose, but I know that complicates things a bit on DF's side of things and raises their costs (especially if they get stuck with some pieces that just never sell singly).

Also, I really like Celtchief's idea for Epsilon. I could almost even see having each of the furnishings sets have an alternate 'damaged' set that can be bought (produced in much lower quantities than the 'undamaged' sets).

arsthein;

I'm replacing a 10-year-old Heat Pump tomorrow, with a $5500 price tag and 5 years of financing.
Wanna swap bills? I'll buy you your DF if you'll buy me my Heat Pump?
Then again, maybe not.

see ya!

I am contemplating destroying some pieces now to get some battle damaged ones...

A complete year of sci fi, no my wallet can't afford that, but an emphsis yes i like. I would like to get a few more things Beta was great, long passages, long walls were needed.

I still think we need a dead end for sci fi, and possible a floor set like the Fantasy Floor Set #16341 but with a Sci Fi theme. A holo table built in (like ANH, RotJ, AtoC for a refrence, I am sure other movies have them just can't think of them off the top of my head), a industriral vat of some sort, exploded floor, small 2x2 "transporter", and oh Conversion bits to match up the passage so rooms could be made inside (this might be a better set on its own though...)

I'm not a sci-fi customer, but I will point out that you probably need to be able to reference at least three sources (two movies in the same series only count as a single source) for any item to be produced, AND make sure none of those sources are suing each other. The Big Two protect their copyrights viciously, and a cease-and-desist order can really screw up your day.

Holo table: SW, ST (remember ST IV, where they were trying to fight the big whale probe?), and BSG, your choice of either series, the G1980 series, or the movie they made from the pilot.
Toss in Alien(s), Galaxy Quest, and of course, Last Starfighter.
ALL of them had a holotable of some size and type.

See ya!

I just hope that DF will do whatever ensures the survival, consolidation and expansion of the company. I may be wrong, but I suspect that that will not be a 'year of Sci-Fi' products.

I took care of that problem already.
A couple of Rangers, who are Sci-Fi gamers I know, were quite willing to help me visit and set these folks right.
The visit was fun even in a slightly demented sort of way.

Please read all of a posting before posting a critique, will ya?
Jeesh!
At least JK and others did; you can tell from what they posted even if they did not agree completely.

Then again, it was my posting, right folks?
What else could one really expect?
