Hi,

Does any one have a good "recipe" of colours and techniques for painting Hirst Arts to match the DF scheme fot the fantasy sets. (Like Mystic Blocks ex vines)

Thanks

I've done some painting of HA stuff -- a lot, of course, depends on the kind of plaster you use. Some comes out white, some more brown or beige.

Still, the general rule of thumb is the same:

1. Start with a black matte primer coat. It will ensure that the deepest recesses stay dark instead of being white little pinpricks.

2. Drybrush on a rather heavy coat that's about 2/3 light brown (raw sienna) and 1/3 dark grey. It should be a very dark brownish grey, and it should cover most of the surface.

3. Drybrush gradual layers of a mixture of grey and brown -- each higher level should be more light greyish brown -- with less and less brown and black per white each time.

4. The final layers of drybrushing should be VERY light grey, mostly white, with a tiny bit of yellow.

If done right, the brown gives the grey an "earthy" tone that matches well, and the yellow gives the highlights an aged yellowing tone that also matches.

I haven't gotten it perfect each time, but some of my pieces match pretty closely. The exact ratio can be tricky -- especially because A) Not every DF piece is exactly the same as the rest and B) The colors look different under different lighting, so what looks right in one setting may not look as right in another.

Still, the big thing to remember is that most DF pieces are a brownish grey, with yellowish-white highlights. As long as you do that (as opposed to "straight grey" or "bluish grey") your pieces should look at least close.

Hope that helps,

Very helpful - Cheers

Do you use any particular brand of paint - folkart, apple barrel etc?. If so can you tell me the colours you use. If not (I use a random assortment of paints for terain) then I will do a few tests using your scheme.

BTW I use black oxide cement colourant to tone my plaster a mid gray.

Thanks

I use Golden Acrylic -- regular paint for canvas painting. Since I also paint with oils and acrylics on canvas, I use the acrylics for my model painting, rather than buying a whole other set of paints.

The colors are standard colors -- black, titanium white, raw sienna, and bright yellow.

Good luck!

In Oz? LOL I guess that would be a DF of a diff color. Hey MLV, thanks again. If there was a plural I would spell it wrong. Where was that string on additions to the web site? Spell checker!!
