Yeah the "useability" of a full on set i think would be an issue... it is not something everyone wants, or even needs, The useability is one of the reasons i went this way, i like the idea of the over hangs and some of the cover items to ice up pre-existing DF, I think in some cases that makes a better set than a strict "ice Cavern" set, it makes it more usefull i think. You aren't restricted to replacing stuff with ice, you just add ice to it.
And what i ended up doing with these was move them from area to area as the PC's went into them (mainly becuase i wanted more area covered)

I makes it into a "wicked" addittions type set or a trap set. Something that is designed to be added to an exsisting set (in this case anyset) and i tried to make the bits big enough to over hang into a set up, to give the look of ice on things like it was pre -existing place, a dungeon, or research complex that got hit by an Ice age, or evil wizard, or curse. It would make staking largely out of the question, but leads to interesting effects in the set ups there are, putting a layer of ice over everything.

I'm kind of happy with these, they are by no means perfect and i want to do a bit more with them too finish them up, but the Resin is a *BEEP* to work with i totally understand why there may have been problems with the Cavernous rivers sets. It takes a long time to cure up, and as a lot of us know from the little pools in the caverns sets, it can still be tacky after a long time, now imagine the Enitre Freaking thing being made out of that tacky material and trying not to get stuck to it, leave finger prints on it etc... I have left stuff for days in a mold to taking it out right away in an effort to see which is better and unless you use a lot of the catalyst (which makes it yellowish) you can't get around some tackness, you get the best by heating before you remove it, but i haven't found anyway to completely remove the tackness with out getting a weird over catalized look to it. I want to get few more walls, larger floor elements to cover stuff.

As to lave/fire... i think you could get just as many interesting things out of it.
Walls of Fire, and flame (i remember something like that from that old SSG you go to a maze made out of fire, i think there were fire salalmanders there in a Drow Volanic Cavern), there could be black basaltic rock tunnels and rooms, and have areas with dripping lava, lava pools, lava rivers, as well as free standing walls of fire/flame.

As to the question on what the corridor is (sorry on other page now, so can't see who asked it), it is a set of walls made from HA that haven't been completly painted.

could you just cast the cavernous rivers and walls in clear resin and give them a different paint job? sounds like a great limited edition set right there! you could do 2 sets. ice and fire/lava. make them pre-order only and choose thr # of sets produced based on the pre-orders. just a thought...

I say, bring on the lava and ice! I have numerous visions in mind for their use. Here's a little cryptic poem as an example:

Some say the world will end in fire
Others say in ice
In the land of deep desire
Burning passion can entice

Lava flows like flaming oil
Ice will spread like newgrown grass
Both can burn and make flesh boil
Both can create shards of glass

Ice will burn and fire freeze
When passion's flames consume your soul
Lose your reason by degrees
Reduce your heart to smoking coal

Wow, cool pictures (no pun intended)! Ice caverns and lava caverns would be awesome for Dwarven Forge. I'm so glad a new golden age of Dwarven Forge has arrived at a time when I have some disposable income to spend.

Seems I also totally missed these pictures and never realized you did ice already ahead of me.

I've now just started my second version of ice pieces. I will post them once I have finished them. But this might take a while as currently there isn't that much time for me to do scratch building. I also have some plans in regard to lava - using clear resin together with red and yellow colour as well as the HA cavern floor molds. I still need to get the colours - but I hope to start it shortly after the ice.

But i actually kind of like yours better, i was going for a different look than yours. In many respects i like yours better for a full on ice set up. It makes me think of that big castle in one of the Connan Movies.

There is enough room for both types, and they have different uses, for different things.

I thought about using resin for lava, but it just didn't seem to work right, and found a much easier way, hit this thread if you want to see what i did First attempt at Rivers of Lava

I have made a few more with the new HA Cavern Floor sets that are really nice, and faster to do. Less work breaking up floor sections.

I think the sets for both lava and ice environments will be fantastic additions.

That being said, I really do hope that a Cavernous WA Set is completed before the various (and multiple) environmental sets are started.

There are just so many basic cavern elements that are still needed within this line.

I will also assume that it would be easier to compliment (or expand) a line after all, (or most) of the basic structural pieces have been developed.

Anyway, hoping for cavern stuff in the (no too distant) future.

Having seen both pieces of work, I agree with Wereweasel, both ice sets do have their uses. I like Thod's work as construction of stand alone structures, but Ghenghis's work is also great as an addition to existing DF stuff. Changes the atmosphere of existing set ups with the addition of ice to it.

Ghenghis, perhaps I am dim but might I enquire whether the ice on your DF sets, are they modular? ie placed onto existing sets? OR did you actually permanently modify the pieces?

Everything is modular that is DF. I made some Ice stuff that was made out of some HA stuff that was more permentaly modified.

Lava sounds great but personally, I think our group would use/buy Ice caverns more.
My '2 cents' anyways.
