wolfzell and weaverjk yup, i plan on adding some frosting effect, either just some white paint or something
If you are open to suggestions: The fastest way might be using that christmas-spray-on-snow. That stuff is even building up on top of it and has a nice snowy structure. But I don't know how good that stuff is standing the test of time, if I remember right, it stays rather soft.

White paint might work best when sprayed. I guess brushmarks might look strange. Otherwise, some good drybrushing might do the trick too.

Another possibility if the resin cures hard enough might be sandblasting the pieces from the top (at some distance).

Or as I already said: modellers snow. Use some spray-on glue from the top and then just dip it...

As the others already said: I am looking forward to those pics too. Borrow a better camera, if you need to. Take some time, use a tripod and don't forget switching to macro (SCNR). =6^)

bye

I just need better lighting i did it in the kitchen where it was really dark at around 1 in the morning, and there was an odd cast from the lamp outside the kitchen door (kind of yellowish) it made it look weirder, and i tried to correct it in photoshop but think i made it worse.

If i get home early enough from work tonight will do some with more natural lighting.

GS -

To paint the snow onto the ice-tops:
Use a SEMI-GLOSS white or slightly grayish-white paint. Put it on heavily on top, and streak it down the sides of the object (wall, column, whatever) unevenly, just enough to show it sticking to the ice in places as it falls and accumulates. After it dries completely (no paint odor), go back and gloss-coat it UN-evenly. This will show partial melting in places, no melt at all in others.

Good luck!

Update.

Made a few more masters to make molds from last night, more walls and overhangs for variation, and a 6 inch long wall, no new bits. And found a GREAT flooring item to place ice onto DF floors .. hehehe

Yes GS, you are doing a great job!
The pieces look good.

How about clean up though?
Are these pieces you have iced forever iced?

I vote for ice rather than lava even though lava would be useful too.
I play in the BT universe though, not Star Wars.
The Greeley system, among other systems, in the BattleTech universe comes to my mind far sooner than the Hoth system in Star Wars.

Additionally, there are far more systems in the BattleTech universe that have Hoth-style planets in them than systems with Mustafar-style planets.

Depends on the piece.

The HA stuff will be forever Iced, it is getting constructed that way to get them to match in height with DF pieces, (HA floors being shorter), the Resin going on top to bring it up to height and make it covered in ice, but see through enough so that it will blend in enough with the DF in height and look like it is a DF corridor or room now covered in ice. Since i can make crap loads more of the HA, i don't care if it gets iced for good, i still have 30-35 lbs of plaster...

The free standing walls will always be ice/snow and are designed to pe palced on/over the HAIce Floors (like the new free standing walls in CaveRiver) or put infront of a DF wall but not directly laying on them/covering them but not permentally attached. (this idea is still up in the air it might look too crappy, i may change it, see bellow)

The Wall overhangs are designed to come off, and are very removble and have made a second mold out of one of the first two i cast, so i can make a bunch at once. I wanted to be able to put them on any DF or HA wall section be it DoE, Fan, or SF stlye and give the look of ice dripping down the walls. I am even thinking about an ice corner, but don't know if i have enough RTV to do it. I want these to go on any set so i don't ruin the DF and have a much more versitle ice piece, if i want ice covered DoE i grab the overhangs, if i want ice covered SF grab the overhangs, so i can build a layout and just add the ice.

The icecles were much longer and went to the floor but a lot broke in the mold, they were too pointy, and to much force was put on them when pulling them out, i was able to get some forcepts and pull a number out so the newer are longer, but there are still some stuck in there (will have to borrow the REALLY pointy ones to get them out tonight... and bubbles may be causing some probelms too). I want to get them going further down the wall, what i might do in the 6 inch long, and/or make one more short master, will be make it so that a few pieces have the iceing layer effect that will go further down the wall to give it a more iced over look, and will give more support to the Icecles so they won't break. This will also give some varity to what is there on the wall, there is some already with the variable hanging lengths of the icecles, but i want more varity...

And i do agree that Ice/Snow is a little more Sci-Fi, and Fire/Lava is more Fantasy i would love to see both sets some day I', just running on an Ice world right now and would love to make a kick'n hoth some day... So i got to go with Ice for now, my last DM would have loved Fire, to nerf my Fire Elementalist Wizard, he kept trying to send us to ooe of the Evil Planes where everything was immune to fire, we kept rebelling and not going, or i would be have NO Spells :( )
I got the Battlefront game out and the clone wars to run through them to get the feel of Rhen Var/Hoth when sculpting the last two (and for the RV maps).

Doh, i forgot the floor bit.

Some time back i made a Gelatinous Cube mold for D&D, why i bought the Clear Resin in the first place. I made like 4 and was done, but the intersting thing about the G-cube is the base is almost 2x2 (it is that rough dimmension but it is not perfectly square common on it's a living Jello shot it can't be perfect.) i had some left over Resin, and poored it in the G-cub mold... when i cured i pulled it out and it makes a great thin layer of ice that is the right size to place over a DF piece, it will be a little taller than the HAIce but will allow for a transition form DF into ice really well.

I need to do some more work on them, and make more... sigh when i tried to cover stuff it's like a real DF set, never enough for what you want to do... ;)

At least i can make more, just bery slow only a few molds some with only one mold, so working away you can't make that many in a day, i have a few ideas to get larger area covered (will actually just make a thin cast with no Hirst arts in it to get 4x4 coverage, and two more 2x2) that should get some extra coverage for exsisting floors.

I think i'm going to repaint, i applied a sealer to the pieces, but it made them shinny again, (and it was suppossed to be flat) the duller look from the snow was better, if i could find a cheap frost coating i would go for it, but wan't going to pay $30 for the one frosting spray i found.. At least this way if the top layer comes off the paint layer under the sealer will still be their. And i want to put a layer of snow on the top to hide the casting blemishes.

The nice thing is the semi solid nature of the resin when it first comes out of the mold means some pieces break leaving intersting and different shapes so not every long piece is the same, adds varitey. that's the only good thing though it tends to be tackey when you first pull it out :(
