Clear Resin was my first thought on how to make ice, i think it would look great, then get a frosting effect on it to make the water go to ice and you have a darn cool look.

I am going to try to modify one of those bits from the photo above into some thing a little bit more usefull, and then make a cast so i can have a number of these.

The best looking thing I think would be to have a Regualr floor, (be it cavern or what ever) then over it a layer of ice, (the clear resin) that i think would look super [i]cool[i].

I'm going to try making some of this tonight, Hirst arts floor tiles are short for regular floors, but a layer of ice over it could get a really cool look and make them the same height so they blend in better with the other sets, then it just comes to the walls that would be pure resin, the new cavernous set gives me an idea, make the walls free standing so that they can go anywhere, and then you just place them on the ice covered floors.

Well looks like i am making a few molds this weekend... would love to have some of this ready by tuesday, maybe just some ice covered ones for the open areas, and the rest of the base is still in free from ice.

Guys!!! I wan't to see that photos coming!!! o.O!

Unfortunately, I don't know how to manipulate (even where to get it) the clear resin here in Spain... and I don't have much spare time for hand made pieces (Sob..) but... pleeeaseee!! show me!! pics! pics!

I'm not sure If I've catch the idea on how to make those stalagmites... but if eventually I'll see it... perhaps I'll manage to try...

I started some of these last night, the quickest and easist was to make a test floor.

I like the way the resin came out, will have to paint the floor bits first, but this was a test to see how the resin would go.

Height wise they are just about spot on with the DF,

I made a better version (Fits better not sure how it will look) of the drapping iceicles and am in the process of making the mold of it and a wall, not that happy with the wall, but can try again later

Holy !!$!$!

That looks great!

I've always been timid about working with resin, other than the occasional water technique. That looks really spectacular, I love the sight of the grid underneath the "ice."

Man, when those are done, you are going to have an AMAZING ice setup.

GS,

Another material you may want to look out for, is a rock/mineral substance called "Utah Ice". I found this in a large aquaruim shop in the rocks section.

This rock/mineral appears basically, identical to flat layers of ice. It can easily be pried apart (along the veins), although I have not tried cutting through it yet. I am presently looking at a piece 5/8" thick and it is still essentially see-through. Based-on what I paid for this up here, I would assume you could get quite a good amount of the stuff for around $10 total. I plan on using it to make icy floor pieces and in some of my icy cavern walls when I get around to it.

I knew I wouldn't have the time to complete the project anytime soon, but purchased the stuff anyway as I knew it was exactly what I was looking for.

This stuff would probably work great when used along with your more fluid clear-resin formations to bind it together. This essentially would allow for see-through ice walls and glacial-like formations as well. You may really want to check this out.

Sorry, no pictures available.

Hi Ghenghis,

nice work with the clear resin, I like it. Wish I had the time right now to try that too.

But I wanted to ask: Have you ever thought about applying a little modellers snow on the upper parts of the ice afterwards? If everything is so clear it looks as if it is somehow melting right now. So maybe with a white top and some white accents it might look somehow "colder" and more "freezing".

bye

Good job. I like the ice coverings. The freestanding wall idea is excellent (should we thank the CR&W set for that inspiration?). I agree with Wolfzell's suggestion. I was thinking that you'd want to add a Frosty look to give it depth in places with maybe only true iceciles as being totally clear. I suppose it depends upon the look you want, some maybe with and without a frosty look.
As for the wall piece with floor, are you going to also make a piece with a solid cave wall covered by ice instead of a total ice wall? Just asking. :)

Thanks for sharing and keep up the good exploratory work!

Thanks Stefan!

wolfzell and weaverjk yup, i plan on adding some frosting effect, either just some white paint or something, these are just the test peices, the first two that came out of the mold to see what the ice looks like. Now i want to make a few more molds so i can cast a bunch at once, the Clear resin takes a long time to set so if i want to make a bunch it will take a long time to make them with one mold.

And yeah CR&W are the insperations for the free standing, now that i know it works pretty well i'm going to tonight make a longer 6 inch wall just to get the ability to cover a large amount of area at once.

The pictures above came out pretty crappy, i was tired and it was late at night after i took them so will take some more later and replace those.

weaverjk the wall piece with floor is actually two seprate pieces, i'm not planing on making any joined, that'w why i was making the overhangs (the iceicls were longer some broke in the mold from the orignal master and would cover more, so i was going to make another master so i can get variations and get more coverare) I wnat to make a room with all of the inside covered in ice, the overhanging ice for the real DF and the HA/Ice for the inside and the ice walls just scattered about to make an interesting look.

I am actually going to have to rework the current adventure the players are in becuase i want to make a bunch of these stuff and use it. So they will have to get stalled on the lower floors for at least a week... ;)

GS -

You did it!

The ice looks great, even with the blurred pics you got stuck with due to lack of sleep. I'm looking forward to the redone photos tonight or tomorrow.

See ya!
