TOPIC: More Lava!

More Lava! 8 Years, 7 Months ago
I have been interested to do Lava and Ice in Caverns for quite a while... but had to get the Rivers and Lakes done first. Because we are doing very well so far with the pre-orders of Rivers I am pretty sure there is some Fire and Ice in the future of the Caves...
I vote for lava! I vote for lava!

I like ice, too, and it WOULD make a FANTASTIC setting for Hoth SWM games. It would be near-perfect, actually, and adding the SF elements would pretty much round that up to "perfect."

BUT --

It would also be less useful, I fear, for fantasy games. The fact is, there is a LOT of fire-based stuff out there (dragons, demons, etc) and relatively little ice-based stuff (white dragons, er, the occasional polar bear, um, a few things I'm forgetting)

Lava is also more threatening -- lava flows represent a danger, a hazard, while ice is pretty much just an obstacle. And lava can represent things like industry in a SF setting -- ice is just wasteland.

PLUS lava works for Obi-Wan vs. Anakin battles, too, so it also offers fun SWM gaming.

And there's no ICE fountain that DF has made yet.

I gotta vote for lava, lava, lava. Ice, maybe later, down the road a bit.

Whatthewha!?!?

Ice Caverns! Fire Caverns! I can finally run that "Year Without a Santa Claus" campaign I've been dreaming of!

This is VERY good news! Thanks, Stefan!

Which is odd... becuase i have actually adventured more in Frozen things in D&D than in Fire based...
Add in the element of Magic and Frozen can be just as threatning as lava, You can drown and freeze at the same time in a nice cold sea which flows just as well, and the PC's are more likely to go out over that frozen river/lake/ice sheet than they are to try to walk on Lava. I tend to think of ice and what may lay underneath it as far more threatening than Lava (maybe all of the winter camping and having to rescue some one who fell throguh the ice in scouts, and having gone into Hypothermia myself makes me think Cold Dangerous).

Or maybe it was becuase one of our College Adventures in the Realms was set at first near the Great Glacier, then on it.
I ran a bunch of adventures in my homebrew world set in the artic area (one of the lackies of the BBEG was doing foul things up there that actually was where everything that was wrong had started, it was near the end of the campaign and one of the climatic fights was in an ice cavern).
In 3.0 we went through one of adventures in Dungeon 87, (Glacier Season - by David Eckelberry
A half-Dragon exile seeks revenge against his draconic father, and you're drawn into the feud! A D&D adventure for 15th-level PCs but adaptable for levels 10–20.) that killed half of the party, and in another game ended up fighting another ancient white dragon in ice caves. In ran this one (www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ch/20010709a) A Giant Ransom they ended up fighting the dragon in it's lair. Not to mention the Frost Giants, Winter Wolves, and Rhemorza and such i have run and fought in D&D games over the past 20 years. There are frozen plains as well as fire plains, and they have their Demons, and i seem to remember Ice devils.

I think in Fantasy there is as much Ice as fire (and not to mention stories based with the evil sorcer/wizard freezing the country side, would work well with that too). The GRRMartin books a Song of Fire and Ice, has the theme Winter is comming and how cold will blanket the land, I think Connan went to a frozen fortess in one of the movies, it is a very classic Fantasy setting.

I have, if not more in fantasy most definatly Equal to, run or been through things that are more artic than fire based. We typically don't hit fire more in my D&D games than ice, it's equal or less.

Then add in the Sci-Fi aspect and the Cold goes up, heck in my current SW game they are on Rhen Var as we speek this week, a frozen waste land slightly more hospitalbe than Hoth (and Ilum jumps to mind, the world from the Clone Wars Cartoon). Yes Ice might be more Sci fi, but it certainly works for D&D.

And while i want Fire too (oh i have plans for a lava planet in my SW game...) and it is very obi/anakin i just want Ice first... maybe becuase i'm on an ice planet now... digging out that Mega Blocks set ;)

plus with resin they might be albe to do it now, after the resin of the water set ... ;)

Would ICE be a wholly new set cast in frosted resin, or would it be a repaint of the existing caverns set?

Why not both? Why not make pools of ice and fire that can be placed into grooves. A lava water fall you can remove and replace with an iceflow. A river of fire you can remove and replace with a iced-over river. I want something that is versatile that I am going to get more use out of-more bang for my buck. That's the great thing about the Cavernous Rivers set, it works so wonderful with the previous cavern sets. Even DoE worked well with previous rooms and halls as a truely evil area or dangerous encounter.

A full set blackened lava tubes or icey caverns would be pretty, but limited to the occasional use unless you Ghenghis and happen to be running a campaign in a cold climate. I would be highly unlikely to buy a full set of either unless DF comes up with a creative way were I will get a lot of use from the pieces.

More than fire or ice, I would like to see DF put out a set of ruined rooms and passages. Old crumbling walls, hallways littered with debris, a mysterious archway, rotted doors with holes in them, all from a civilization over a 1000 years ago. This would work well in any type of Fantasy or Sci-fi adventure. You could do an easy do dungeon furnishing follow up with piles of rubble, shatter pilliars, cobwebs than can be placed in corners, piles of bones, shatter furnature-the possibilities are pretty awesome.

Actually i had a wicked idea, after writting that last post, something i'm going to try when i get home... i hope it works. Some thing that goes with the Versitle idea, and the "A river of fire you can remove and replace with a iced-over river" and would require no new cavern or anything sets...

If my idea works it will be PERFECT for what i want now heeheheh, but if it doesn't well, i'll shut up becuase it may not work. but i am very excited about this and can't wait to rush home and try it to see if it will work... Has to do with the last line of the second to last bit in the previous post

:happy dance:

Yeah a small runied set could work well, i had to jury rig some ruine bits in my game two weeks ago, i dropped a sci-fi wall some time back and it broke, while it was broken i made a mold so i could make a cast of it, so i could get lots of broken bits for ruined walls and floors. Then glued the real one back to gether and combined with floor bits, broken walls and loos rocks from various sets i made a caved in room/

I think ice caverns could really be cool. Especially if the walls were cast in clear resin with a bit of a frosting effect. Maybe even have a few skeletons in various poses suspended in the resin like they're watching the PC's as they make their way through.

And to think you guys thought MY wisecracks were so bad you ignored them!

Really be cool? Frosting effect?

I quit; I can't win. I think I'll just go play with my Wampa and my Yeti until things cool off a little.

BTW: I think they'd be pretty cool too.

See ya!

LAVA LAVA!!! I vote for Lava caves!!! if the both can be, it would be ok, but lava... much more use than ice (in fantasy of course.. heheee...) I've been since the release of Cavernous Rivers thinking in lava... curious thing the theme now is on the air... ^____^

Lava pleeeaseeeee!!!

Seriously: an idea: I think in lava pools, canals, cracks, with the need for rocky bridges, etc. That are floor pieces almost all, and you'll need several of several types. But what do you think guys of ice? I think in it more like accesories: snow mounds, several slippery flat floor pieces, stalactites and stalagmites of ice, complex ice formations, perhaps even some ice walls or icy rock walls. wouldn't it be ice enough?

By the way: More than thinking in ruins (mystic blocks and some accesories are enough for me), don't you miss some temple/palace/royal environment, with white/clear flat (perhaps with runes) walls, polish marbel floors and columns, etc...? (well, always with square pieces in floor please)... I dream with something like that very often... it could be a pyramid with the correct accesories, an abandoned good temple, the palace of some non-gothic wizard, dwarven subterranean stronghold... so many things... just the look of "hey guys, the people who made this had a lot of money"... ^___^

What do you think?

Arsthein -

I think I feel some custom castings coming on; you've given me some ideas.

Picture this; clear cast resin, like they use for embedding stamps, trinkets, or photos. Mix just a small amount at a time, and, on a polyethylene slab, or maybe on waxed paper, drip enough to build a "dot" of resin. Make as many of these as you have room on the base and mixed resin. Afte it sets up and is cured, drip some more, enough to cover the first dot. Continue this process until you build up a nearly-clear, pointed spire, 'ice' stalagmite. let it cure completely, pull it off the slab or waxed paper, and voila!, one ice stalagmite or stalactite (if you're using IO's or my risers), ready to use.
Similar methods can be used for slick ice patches on floors, etc. If you lay waxed paper on a set of DF steps, you can make molded-to-shape ice (and snow, with a little white or very light gray paint between layers of resin) to put ON the stairs when needed.
Man, the possibilities are endless!

I'm going to have to try this myself; I'll report back later!

See ya!

You know, I didn't even think of clear resin for the ice caverns, but that would be fantastic!

Here's a question, though: would the floors be the same as the floors for the regular cavern set? If so, that would let us use the cavern river, lake and a future wicked additions set (hint hint, Stefan) in the ice cavern as well. But would it look strange having this rocky floor in an ice cave?
