Why so long between restocks? 1 Year ago
First, let me say I'm not asking this in an accusatory tone or anything of the sort. Second, I apologize if it has been asked before and answered.

That being said, why does it take so long between restocks? Is it the painting process or something? I ask because I'd really like to get my hands on a cavern set, but I'm told they won't be available until Spring. On eBay, cavern sets sell quickly (even pieces) and that seems like money DF is missing out on. Obviously, demand is high (as it should be), but it's frustrating for it to be so difficult to get a set. It seems they're out of stock more often than not.

Again, I'm not trying to criticize, just wondering about how things work behind the scenes.

First of all they have to raise the cash to pay for a full or half a container whatever the case may be and then there is the long lead time of the slow boat from China. Another reason for relooking at moving stateside. Can do smaller orders and massively reduce shipping costs. Just my HO.

Hadn't thought about the boat time. I always forget that they are made in China. Still, it would seem that more frequent orders are possible. Surely DF isn't in such financial shape that they have to scrape up loose change to make an order.

It's only 4-6 weeks from pretty much any port in China and over land to the dock here in the USA. My company imports materials all the time and I've been in this business for a long, long time.

Ordering management is really tough in a hobby market because you get onesie/twosie orders. When do you order? How long can you have your cash sitting, tied up in inventory? In Illinois (IIRC) there is an inventory tax, so you have to move as much as you can before your fiscal year ends, or you end up paying tax on stuff you've not even sold.

It's a very tough business.

That said, with Dwarvenite, it's probably a queue time problem too. It's not like these Chinese injection molding plants are sitting idle just waiting for an order. So, they have to wait in line with their current vendor (who is probably sitting on the molds and tooling). The resin is probably worse!

I live and work in Illinois as well and I have watched management shuffle around orders at the end of the fiscal year, trying to deal with inventory tax and keep it as low as possible. Also, when I ordered my DF I had to pay sales tax which means it must be located in IL, so they would indeed be subject to that inventory tax

Regardless of the reasons, this is one of the things which has bugged me for the past 12 years that I've been collecting DF stuff. All of my 12+ sets have been purchased second hand on ebay because the shop never has anything in stock.

I'd probably own a significantly larger number of DF sets if this were not the case. While I have some of the game tiles and really like them (great idea), they can't touch the charm and character (and usefulness) of the resin sets.

I am hoping that funds or profit from the game tiles will allow DF to stock the normal sets more frequently. It is pretty frustrating when you have money you'd like to give to a company...and can't!

I think everyone, including DF, is hoping that. It sounds like they've got a resin order coming in June, so keep your eye out for that. Assuming that order sells well, I expect they'll use some of the funds from the caverns KS to restock again.
