West End Games d6 Star Wars? That was one of my favorite rule systems. We played it the same way, and only broke out a grid during space combat just to make things simple. We usually didn't even move the player’s ship, just the ships around it to represent their relative position.

With the new Star Wars we always make maps, but we haven't played that since before we started buying DF.

"Killing is wrong. And bad.
There should be a new, stronger word for killing.
Like badwrong, or badong. Yes, killing is badong.
From this moment, I will stand for the opposite of killing, gnodab."

This Is Part of Why I Like City Adventures So Much... (Figured out the Poll Function by the Way... THanks Thor), There is Way more Roleplay... Don't get me Wrong I Love Good Battles as Much as the Next Hack/ Slash GM, But With Towns you Can Draw a Map on Scrap Paper and it is Sufficient to Get things Started... In a Dungeon it is More Complicated...

I have 3 city-states and a few more cities. Problem is there are few good city adventures out there.

The Poll is Under the "How Do I Use This Stuff" Catagory, is what I Meant to Say...

And I Love Cities, Yes and Towns, Villages What Ever... And Really Making Your Own is Not that Hard, You Can Even Cheat and Use little One Level Dundeons out of Magazines or What Ever when the Players Get Itchy... Just Write it In, there are always, Temples, Graveyards, Evil Towers and Mansions Etc, that almost any Short Adventure can be Modified for in a City...

We Did it with Paper, Pencils and those Really Ugly TSR Dice that Looked Like Hard Crayon Wax... you remember having to "Ink" the Numbers in? Boy I was Impressed the First time I Saw a D20 that Did not Require Inking...<Smirk>...

Holy crap, I had forgotten about that. I remember carefully filling them in with a narrow felt tip. Damn, that brings back some memories... :)

I love the roleplaying aspect as well. Thor is more a combat guy, but he's been giving us more roleplaying lately, and we've been digging it.

It's all about balance. A good DM will have just the right amount of fighting to keep you on the edge of your seat, without having to sacrifice story for the action.

Thor's Laws of Gaming:

1) Start fast and hard. (200 Undead walking out of a river) This gets the PCs attention.
2) Let the story unfold and have the PC always slightly behind....
3) If they don't seem intrested. Liston to what they are saying and switch gears. (Do not wait do it right away!) Always be prepared (Looking?) for interesting angles that you can exploit. Be prepared to dump any of your material that is not working. Cry later but dump it. Move on....
4) There does not have to be fighting to have "combat". (Anything stresssfull or dangerous is "combat". Done right clearing a chest of a trap could (SHOULD!) have the player plenty nervous.......
5) KEEP MOVING FORWARD. Do not get bogged down.
6) Try for an "epic" ending that is the desert of your game. End on a high note with some new, interesting, or disturbing info revealed.
7) Pop a cold one. (Repeat as needed)

Interesting Note: These are the exact same tactics which are so effective with women.........

MrMorden,

I Still Have A Couple of the Dice that Came with my "D&D Expert" Set... At Some Point it Seems Like Someone was Marketing Special Crayons Specifically for Inking Dice...<Chortle>... I Still Remeber my First D30 too... By The Tree That was a Brilliant And Useless Die... (Still Have Some though, and a Couple of those Golf Ball Shaped D100)... I Know they Still Make Both, but I Remember Fondly when they were Still Novel... Or How About The 7 Sided Die Chessex made Briefly? Never Owned One of those though... (I Think it was Chessex)...

Thor,

I Like Your DM Rules, and Had to Chuckle with your addendum, About Women... Not Sure about the Undead Part however, as in Real Life I Have Ever Only Known one Person to Claim to really be a Necropheliac... And Of Course it was a Dude... I Did Read An Article Written by (Or Allegedly by) A Woman... But Guys Talk about it More... Not Sure it would Make a Great Opening on a First Date...<EFG>...

No No No 8) Undead just an Example (Well, I did use that once)

1) Start Fast and Hard: In a game start with some completely wild-ass thing, A meteor striking, An Earth quake, Dead Dragon falling out of the sky. PCs skin starts rotting off.....etc)

With Woman the same. "Start Fast and Hard:"

I'm getting this stuff staight out of the DM's Guide and Boy Scouts Handbook.

Yes, It's in the Bible too. (Toward the back)
