I wanted to see if any one else here things a clockwork room set would be an awesome addition to DF.

Here's why I think it would be so great!

One of my favorite action scenes was the clockwork room battle in Hellboy the Golden Army.

Think how cool gears could be used to make unique terrain to fight around and through. See the example pictures below.

Also, the final sword duel in Shanghai Knights, inside Big Ben's clockworks.

Any other movies with great action sequences in clockwork environs?

Are you looking for gears etched/carved into/onto the floors and walls, or gears in the room?

I'm curious if the craft store might have some pre-cut wooden "gears" that could be painted for this, or maybe a working clock model kit that could be scavenged for pieces.

And I think Warhammer has at least one kit that includes a pretty neat orrery-type apparatus.

I'm thinking that gears in the room as well as the walls would be pretty awesome.

I think it would have too much limited use. Add-ons, even scratch built one would be better

I would use it all the time since I love the clockwork theme. I suppose you could argue that icy caverns or the hellscape set might be limited in use, but they are some of my favorite sets.

I'm sure they would be gorgeous (and fit in with a setting like Eberron), but personally it would probably be towards the bottom of my "to buy" list. My group sticks with Forgotten Realms and Dark Sun in our games- all of the DF sets except the SciFi sets work for those settings.

I was just thinking that a clockwork set would be fun as a limited edition set for a unique environment different from the others we already have.

Clockwork themed pieces may be a little more versatile than one might think at first consideration. They can be used for an actual clock's interior, the working bits of a mechanical trap, an arcane or divine device that keeps the world going (or counts down to the end of the world), the workings of a drawbridge or portcullis, the interior of a mill, or atmosphere for a dungeon filled with constructs.

However, I agree that they might work better as accessories than actual tiles, although a couple of floor and/or wall pieces might really clinch this as an accessory set. Just off the top of my head, let's say...
2x 2" gears
2x 1" double gears - two gears connected at the cogs/teeth
1x 4" gear
1x 4" half gear (floor) - as if protruding from the level below
1x 2" half gear (wall) - as if protruding from the next room
1x 2"x2" half cylinder gear - as if protruding from the level below or the next room

Eight pieces that could be placed in various configurations. If the standard thickness was 1/4-1/2", they might be able to stand in the center of an open space, flat on the floor, or up against a wall. That would make a nice little accessory pack priced somewhere between a small DF set and one of the existing accessory sets.

Thoughts?

TOTALLY AGREE. I would LOVE something like this. Any kind of clockwork gears would be awesome -- accessories or some kind of hints of them within an existing setting. A full-on room would be fantastic.

It's one of the features I like about the GW "Witchfane Tor" piece. I put pics up awhile ago of it once I painted mine up. This is the clockwork floor:

yes, beautiful clockwork floor there. I'm big into steampunk and alot of people I know think steampunk is the in thing these days. I guess that's why the idea of a clockwork set really winds me up ;).

Basically the whole "clockwork dungeon" idea resonates within me the atmosphere of the abandoned Dwarven holds depicted in SKYRIM. In that setting you get the works; the pistons smashing, automatons performing continual functions without reference to time, noisy gears that spin without rest, and so on...

While the idea is not a bad one, the atmosphere, as an expansive one, isn't one that gets me as "steamed" up as some of the other creative definitions of dungeon that have been realized over the years.

That said, as a diabolical DM I feel the use of such an industrial setting would make for a superb torture room dungeon accessory. After all, what's a dungeon without a proper torture room right?

From a business stand point it would seem the production of an accessory setting rather than an entire setting could make for a smaller risk, while still supplying the market with a desired product at a profit for the firm.

Thoughts?
