What I would like to see are some entrance pieces to our dungeons and caverns. the idea here is a piece that links your dungeon with the world above. Some examples:

A cavern mouth
A Sinkhole
A Rift

DaggerDaleDM,

Hey Kewl... I Like this Idea... Sort of like the Demon Gate in Reverse?

1) Crypt...

2) Mine Shaft... (Since we've been Discussing Mines again)...

3) Large Ancient "Gate"... (Deja' Entrance to the Mines of Moria)...

4) Some Sort of Portal... (Also Mentioned in other Areas)...

5) Heavy Duty Stone Stairs... (Made to the Scale of the Ramp in the Traps Set)...

6) Cave Mouth... (Particularly for Caverns)...

7) Ruined Walls... (Enrance from a Collapsed Basement/Cellar Wall... Or other Ruins)...

Yeah, I noticed this when building my little Dwarven Cafeteria -- the cave mouth piece, from the first cavern set, is one of my favorite sections, but it seemed too small for my purposes. I didn't want one small cave entrance, I wanted a huge portal.

It's difficult because the walls are small and we see no ceilings. Other than the stairs going up and the spiral staircase piece, how do you suggest there's an entrance ABOVE your display? You can have the bottom of a mine shaft or the bottom of something, but how would they be distinguished from any other floor piece?

I was thinking of transitions between the cave and dungeon pieces, like the ones that exist.

To be honest, I Think that it might be Worthy of DF to do Some "Special" Rooms (Ala' Ogre's Den), for The "Bottom" of the Mineshaft, Could even have a Ladder Going up etc...

MyLordVoid,

Your ideas were excactly what I was thinking. Just a set of pieces that you can use to begin your dungeon crawl, to give that, Abandon all hope etc. feeling.

Just a set of pieces that you can use to begin your dungeon crawl, to give that, Abandon all hope etc. feeling.

Oh, if only there were some kind of doorway that looked like a leering demon face that you had to walk through the mouth........

;)

I'm sorry, but you went so far as to say "Abandon all hope..." so I had to go there.

I really do think the demon archway is meant to convey that "here is the dungeon -- BEWARE!" kind of feeling. It's hard to describe it as anything other than a dramatic entrance!

It seems to not be what you're thinking of for two reasons:

1. It's not the bottom of anything, it doesn't point up. I think DF has tried to avoid that, since the walls are somewhat short and there are no ceilings. There isn't ever really any indication of what goes on above the pieces, and I don't know what could. For that reason, I'm not excited about the bottom of a mineshaft type piece. How would it differ from a cavern piece?

2. The demon archway, despite being the "beginning" of a dungeon, is clearly meant to connect with other pieces so as to make it PART of a dungeon. So it really introduces a new SECTION of dungeon, not the whole thing.

I'd love to see more dramatic portals and entrances, and so forth, especially larger cavern transitions and things like that. If they could come up with a way to show how the players "got down there," I'd love to see it. But I'd definitely want something unique and distinctive, something unlike what we've already got.

Dagger DaleDM,

Perhaps we ought to Just Commision Some of the Brilliant Minds on the Forum to Build this Stuff?...<Grin>...

Law,

I Guess my "Vision" when I gave the Mine Shaft Example was a Fairly Unique type of Piece(s), that Would Perhaps have a "Lift" or "Ladder" or similar object actually Leading Upwards towards an Imaginary "Upper Level"... So it would be more 3D than say the 2x2 "Down" Stairs or the Current, way out of Scale, "Ascending" Stairs (The analogs of the Sci-fi Ramps)... The Same of the Large Staircase, How Kewl would it be to have a 6x6 (Or Larger), Floor Section that was mostly Big wide Stirs leading up "Out" of the Dungeon/Level?

And of Course the Idea of an Exterior Cave Entrance... I mean Wow... And it Could actually break from the 5cm Wall Height tradition, by having a taller "Face" since it would be an Exterior Piece anyway... Hell make it 8" tall with lots of Jagged Outcroppings and even some Foliage (Removeable of Course), I mean I'd use something like that as a Cave Entrance all the Time...!

That does sound cool. I'd LOVE a massive stair section. Luckily for me, that is sometihng I can put together with HA molds. In fact, I can put it together with the molds I currently own!

The stairs in this pic -- picture them bigger, and painted to match DF stuff. One thing about HA, you can make whatever you want, so these stairs could be as high and as wide as I want them to be. I could scuff them up, too. In general, I think that is a really great idea for a piece, and it WOULD set the scene for the dungeon really well.. ...

hmmm.....

Law,

1) That is a Terrific Shrine/Temple/Gothic Bus Stop!!!

2) Hey Imagine those Steps, with say a "Landing" every Third Step or so Just wide enough for Miniatures to Stand Part way up the Staircase... (This would Allow for Battles up and Down the Stairs too)...

3) You Really are a Great Artist! I Dig the look of all of the Pieces you have posted thus far...

These are great ideas and I love the stairs/shrine.

I can't wait to see what everyone else is doing.
