All painted miniatures should be handled with care, especially the metal ones. The only exception is the plastic D&D miniatures where you can dump everything into one bag and carry. So, if you are the type of person who cannot handle your figures with care, you should stay with the plastic one.
The success for D&D miniatures is not based on the price alone. If Dwarven Forge makes the same plastic D&D minatures, will it sell well at the same price? The answer is NO.
The reasons for the D&D success is:
1. All these plastic figures are official. They have the more than 20 years of the D&D system to back them up. You can use DF figures in you D&D or D20 systems but they are not tourament legal.
2. Besides role-playing, they can be used in Skirmish games. The popularity of skirmish games probably exceed the tradition D&D games. NO such thing exist for DF figures.
3. The randomization and skirmish game concept help to maintain a strong secondary market. You get a rare and it will always have some value. With retirement of older set, even the price of your common and uncommons will go up. Yes, take a look at Harbinger figures on ebay. With DF, there is no rare or uncommon. You simply buy what you want.
4. All other prepainted or handpainted figures are way too expansive. Mage Knight may be the exception but this is a totally different system.
5. Easy handling. There are a lot of people who does not like to paint or to buy special containers designed to store figures.
6. Ongoing expansion. The expansion for DnD minatures comes up every 3 or 4 months with differnet varieties of troops. On the other hand, DF only have three theme armies consisting mainly warriors. That is all, nothing exciting.
As stated in my other posts, from the marketing point of view, it will be a bad idea for DF to get into miniatures. The profit margin, even for D&D miniatures are actually very low but this is compensated by the fact that people and stores are buying them in large quantity. In order for DF to do well in their minaitures, they have to lower down the original price tremendously. They have to develop more varieties of figures. They should invent their own skirmish combat system with introduction of some rare or limit edition models. The whole concept will take at least a year or more to develope. The best solution for DF is to concentrate on the terrain pieces only. As a gamer, however, I hope that they will not discontiue their miniature line.

But they are the best (Painted Plastic/Resin) minis that exist!!! :D

Thats why I liked em and hope for many more. I don't think D&D will ever make the oddball minis (See other thread) I want and need for RPG.

i agree with the guest just before, minis isn't the best way for DF to grow up. but creating some minis for the customers of DF if there is a large ask can be a good idea as well.
for example here is what minis without weapons i use for my game
i use them often, but they are not well painted so i wait for a new mini DF line
there are the noble one, the rich person owner, the beautiful princess, the old man, the hen, the waitress, the barman, the young girl, the mother, the lover who lost his wife, the logger, the drunk bagaror of the tavern, the poor man, the tortured, the dog, the hind, wild boar, the fox...

Looks good. These are exactly the types of minis which are so useful to the time-pressed DM's of today.

I would love it if DF did a set of villagers. Every mini using DM should be able to use somthinglike this. I would have multiple sets. :D

I think a set of minis of "normal people", farmer, barmaid, princess or noblewoman, old beggar, boy, girl, mother with baby, etc. is exactly what DF could do which the D&D minis are unlikely to ever cover because such figures are not useful for the skirmish game. At MOST, they might do one or two of these types. The one human commoner they did was not very well received, I don't think. Plus this is such a huge need for DM's that use minis for roleplaying instead of skirmish games that I think it would be sure to have a nice reception. What DM who uses minis wouldn't want to buy such a set?

Zoro,

Yes this has Been Braught up before too... Fact Is WotC will NEVER have a Use for The Extra Rare "Farmer with Pitchfork" Figure or The "BarKeep" (An Outsider of Course)... Since they would Be Silly in a Table Top Strategy Game, So in my Less Than Humble Opinion, There is a Nich here for Well Painted "Town" Folk, Possibly in Themed Packs...
-Town Folk... (Fish Monger, Random Walking, Drawing Water)
-Royals...
-Farmers...
-Guilds Members... (Black Smith, Armouror, Wheel Wright Etc...)
-Revelers... (For the Would Be Modular Tavern Of Course)...

It is very unfortunate that DF has decided to discontinued its miniature line. The failure is due to the high cost and lack of its game rules. They are also very fragile. I still like them due to its painting scheme and quaility. Besides, all minor repair are easy to make and the base can be made more steady and balanced with extra putty at the bottom.
I here like to urge DF again to reconsider about investing their fantasy miniature line in the future with its own game system: one for skirmish and one for RPG /other D20 systems. If you look at Star War Miniatures, the rules are so simple to learn and use. One can also use the same cocept from Mage Knight to use cards, such as relice, items, spellbooks to upgrade your characters.[/b]

Hey how about a Deck of Cards for DF and Random Dungeons? Sorta like the Random Room Building Cards from the Warhammer Quest Game? I Like any time that a Card deck can be used to Generate anything from encounters, to Treasure to Miscellaneous stuff normally relegated to endless dice rolling...
