I've been noticing stonework stairs lately, and a new piece occurred to me.

Unsupported stairs.

Come on, you know what I mean, it's a set of stairs that stick out of the wall with no risers or structure to hold the free end up. Basically a board or a slab that is slotted into the wall, with no other structural point of reference.

Frequently, they are trapped to fold down, or one is made of something that won't hold more than fifty pounds, or some/all of them slowly slide into the wall so the party has to run to get to a door or a landing.

This would be a 4" or 6" straight wall, with platforms about every quarter inch vertically, measuring about 0.75 x 1.25 inches. For bonus points, make one that rises left to right, and one that descends left to right. Or, make a 4"x4" corner and put a 90-degree turn in the stairs, to evoke the bottom of a deep/tall (square) shaft with stairs spiraling (squarelling?) up.

Unsupported stairs could be used as a stylistic element to distinguish one dungeon from another, as a signature that identifies a race or culture, to replace blank walls where the party's wizard has cast a spell to create stairs, to replace blank walls where a mechanical or magical apparatus extends the stairs (by solving a puzzle?), or to show a staircase that may or may not retract into the wall at the worst possible moment.

I don't know how difficult this would be to cast/manufacture, but I imagine that the simplest way would be to cast the wall with horizontal slots, and insert the stair platforms after everything was dry and set.

Is this a recognizable enough feature to include in the DF lines? Which line should it go in, Classic or RotA?

I'd LOVE to see that! Man, it feels like ages since someone has had a new idea, there didn't seem anything left that hasn't been suggested already. But I think stairs built into a wall would be awesome.

I think they should be for classic dungeon stuff, it's such a great castle image. The stairs we currently have for ROTA feel perfect, and I'm not sure it would work for MBS. Of course, a twisted, organic, horrific version might work for DoE, but didn't Stefan say he was done with that one?
