Letting all my DF stuff go...really do not want to but am forced to... 4 Years, 12 Months ago
I had a herniated disc a few years ago, but didn't have to get surgery. Did a few weeks of physical therapy, and have been doing regular exercises since then to keep it up. It keeps me feeling okay, though I sometimes have bad days. If I ever want to be fully cured of this and just forget it ever happened, a microdiskectomy is inevitable. I didn't want it at the time, as I was just starting law school and couldn't spare a month. But we'll see. For now, I'm trying to pretend I'll never have to face it, but that seems unlikely.

L

Yea I was thinking of trying to stay away from any surgery but my wife has talked me into it. Funny thing I just got life insurance...:O)

I have been doing the physical therapy for some time now. Well not real recent but 2 years ago for over 6 months. I am just concerned that it grew from 2mm to 6mm.

We well see.

I had to practice some exercises every day for almost two years, and some days were bad than others, including a couple of a week long times that was really bad. I had to walk half an hour every day too. But in the end, now I don't do the exercises anymore and can practice any other sport. Avoid the surgery if you can. Recuperation is really fast I've seen it, but too often leaves you with life-long little pains sometimes. If the inconveniences of a long-term recuperation are really incompatible with your life, then surgery is, I guess.

The first thing to do is to find a good surgeon. You are looking for a spinal surgeon or a neurosurgeon for whom the (micro)diskectomy is one of the simpler things that they do.

I was told to expect a full recovery, and that's the result I got -- I'll admit to having the occasional muscle spasm (like once every few months), but that's probably more about the muscles (or lack thereof) in my back than about the surgery. I have never had a recurrence of the excruciating "phantom" pains that the herniated disk was causing.

There is a 20% chance that the condition will occur again -- if I understood correctly, that has little to do with the surgery and a lot to do with having back issues. If it does happen again, there is a chance that doctors will want to treat the pain instead of doing the surgery. Considering the amount of pain I was in last time, I don't think that would be a good option for me.

There was a recent advance in knee surgery that allows surgeons to replace the cartilage in the knee with a more-or-less permanent substitute. This could lead to the invention of an artificial replacement disk, which will probably change the landscape of spinal surgery for herniated disks.

Even if you are leery of the surgery (and if your insurance covers it) go get a consult with a surgeon. They'll answer your questions and address your concerns, and you'll be able to make a more informed decision.

Strange that all this talk about back pain has come up when I'm experiencing my first real back problem !!! I've never hurt it before and don't really know what I did to it now. It started as a dull pain in the lower back a couple of weeks ago and now it's really throbbing. It's worse when I stand for a while and I feel like a rusty pocket knife as I try to "fold" myself to sit down !!!

I must be getting old because I don't remember how I even did this to myself !!

I tried to see my doctor but I have to wait 2 weeks !!!! They suggested a walk-in clinic ... who were going to charge me $150 to be seen. WOW !!! That's more painful than my back !!! Don't they realize that's more than a ROTA 2 Set ???!!!!

Any arm-chair doctors here that have any suggestions? I just picked-up some ThermaCare heat wraps this morning and it seems to help slightly.

It sounds very much like a herniated disk, mostly because it sounds a lot like what happened to me. (Tiny little grabbing sensation that turned into a huge pain all the way down one leg.) If the ThermaCare helps a lot, it is probably muscular, but if they only help a little it could be the disk. (With a herniated disk, the pain you feel is actually a lie -- it is a false signal generated in your spinal column, not the result of any injury or distress where you feel pain.)

Unfortunately, your options are very closely linked to your health insurance. I, for example, was given anti-spasm drugs and sent to physical therapy and referered to a kinesiologist (quack!) before my GP was "allowed" to send me out for an MRI, which of course showed the problem immediately -- but then I had to get cortisone injected in my spine (which is a whole story by itself!) before I could get the surgery that fixed the problem. I found out later that had I been paying $7.00 more per month, I could have gone straight to the MRI and the surgery.

See your doctor (but consider changing to a practice with multiple doctors, so you can make an appointment with the next doctor who has an opening). When you get the diagnosis, ask if it could be anything else. When you get your treatment, ask what the next step is if the treatment doesn't work. If the next step is more appealing, ask if there is a reason not to go straight to that.

Uh oh ... just what I need to deal with right now !! While the ThermaCare helped a bit, it's still throbbing. My legs are fine but the pain is starting to wrap around to my hips now ... probably because my posture is compromised as I try to find a comfortable stance.

Oh well, thanks for the input, jackattack. I did get a call from my doc's office ... there was a cancellation for Friday a.m. so I'll get in sooner than expected to get his take on it.

I know EXACTLY what you mean about limited options based on health insurance policies. Unfortunately, I think I'm in the same boat you were in when you had your trouble.

Thanks again !!

Oh, and to comment on the original topic of this thread :

I'm glad you decided to keep some of your sets, Sean !! I know things are tough right now but that's when you need your happy diversions most. Trust that things will get better. Good luck with everything and congrats on the little one !!

Hello,

About the only thing still available that you requested are some blank water tiles and the halfling house.

Since I was keeping the other stuff you had requested. Sorry.

I have a gentleman that is interested in a few of the MBA stuff so have to quote shipping. Just finals week and back of slowed this quote down. Hope to have that done by Saturday. If ends up being to much it might be available.
