Dave, as someone who sets up some pretty amazing outdoor encounters, how would you see DF pulling off an outdoor set? Would it be flat tiles? Tiles of various elevations? Stream and lake tiles? Road tiles? Would there be trees? Bushes? Boulders?

I just can't envision it....

I'm not Dave but I have some comments on this...

I have an extensive outdoor prop collection and it has always bugged me that this stuff just sits on top of mats or whatever, it never has the feel of a cohesive environment.

Well, DF has changed this for me totally with its current lines and I can easily see how a modular DF inspired system could work. Being an outdoor system you would concentrate more on landforms,
(i.e. www.rickriordan.com/types_of_landforms.htm) with sets that also represent roads and other man-made props that are not buildings.

Changes in elevation, vegetation, rock formations, water bodies, etc. could be handled gradually and I'm sure quite cleverly by DF.

I do think that it would require something more on the scale of the Cavern pieces, at least 4 x 4.

I can picture it quite clearly, but I also suspect it's too ambitious of an undertaking; that is unless Stef and Jeff want to stay busy for years and years to come... ;o)

Anything new from DF will be welcome ¨¨ !!

I also would like to get one more DOE set, a passage/accessories set for the ROTA and of course one more (pleasseeeeeeee) for the medieval.
Also the repetitive idea of a sewer rooms/passages/accessories set to complete the dunjeon & medieval serials.

Later the cavernous icy set we dream about.

Ooh, link me to the thread on Medieval Building Set expansion.

Do you want the sewers as an expansion for the main Fantasy line, or a new line with a unique look (like DoE and RotA)? (Darn, now I have to go resurrect a sewer thread...)

I would envisage any outdoors set being initially quite "specific" in nature e.g. a set that will enable you to create the 'outdoor bit' of a village by adding it around mbs sets or by just butting up multiple sets of outdoor tiles. In this context, I would not expect hills, ridges or anything too fancy in early sets. If the range took off and people were clamouring for more then Stef could start making slope and hill, ridge, raised ground and undulation expansion sets.

If anyone remembers the old "geo hex" (hexagonal polystyrene wargaming tiles) then I think this shows that it would be possible to envisage undulations, ridges and hills (central parts of raised hill tiles could be double or triple thickness?) I agree that it would cost silly money to build a six foot by four foot table in this but hey, it hasn't stopped me and plenty of other forum members doing exactly that for cavern and dungeon environments, so I don't see why it wouldn't stop people doing it for outdoor sets.

At the end of the day, you could just buy a grass mat and use a ruler or use a chessex mat with a grid and a pen and it would be much cheaper but we all buy DF because of the quality, the fact it is pre-painted and the fact it has a grid 'built in.' I think these unique selling points apply equally to outdoor sets as well as to dungeon and building sets.

Dave

It's an enginering challenge to be able to do the great outdoors but I think it is 'do-able.'

Great Outdoors!!!

You can have a base level that is slightly uneven but still good enough for miniatures to be on. Of course they will have the 1 inch squares on them for easy miniature moving.

Then other pieces that have a slight slope for gentle hills. Anything greater than that mini's wouldn't stand up on them. And yes all these are in the 4 x 4 or 6 x 6 pieces with perhaps special pieces like a well or what not on a 2 x 2 with a few 2 x 2 that are fillers for these special pieces. Then as to the trees there could be trees that are attachable by either magnets or hole and stud method. Same for bushes or large rocks. River pieces could be close to being the same as the Cavernous river but with sandy colored beaches and Stalagmites. (When the mites go up the tites come down :O) , how I remember).

Of course my vision is PALE on what Stef and Jeff could come up with.

While I like to see expansions for the existing line I also really like these limited edition sets as well. These things can be added easily enough in to the existing lines it doesn't matter that much. You in a classic dungeon then you come upon a Den of Evil door that introduces the Den of Evil area...etc. Stef seems to make it easy enough to add these to your classic or cavern set up.

While recently I have sold everything except the Den of Evil (Because it is limited) and Classic dungeon (still have some cavern settings like open water and cavern lake expansion) I do plan once I graduate to get the other stuff in force. After all I did get a table with this stuff in mind.

So I think how Stef and Jeff have been doing it is perfect. Introduce a new line RoTA they still did expansions for the existing line ABS2. Plus I am sure while the design was there them going BOw-Tie-Less was probably a little expensive. ALthough I think it was the best thing they did, I am sure there are opinions otherwise, it made me buy a lot more stuff.

I also agree a sewers line would be great that could be tied into the classic line. This would also work with RoTA and Den of evil easy enough.

At any rate I am very happy with the way DF stuff goes I would buy!

I think a sewers set should follow the fantasy mastermaze product line since it's entirely compatible with other sets.We already have the main pieces to build rooms & dark passages, we mainly just need ladders, pipes, short bridges and floor tiles with water compatible with make & river sets.(2x6 /2x2 / 4x4)
That's why I think a such set is possible.

I would go with a set similar in purpose to the Fantasy Floor set, but with Fantasy Walls instead. That kind of set would have pieces which can be combined with the classic fantasy sets, altering their type of environment. For example, I would put some sewer pieces, catacomb pieces (with skulls, alcoves with bones, etc), dungeon (literally) with chains on the walls, doors with iron bars, and so on.

I think this because that kind of environments doesn't need to have entire sets full of pieces created for that purpose, but they are created more with details in the fantasy standard style, just like I also think it happens with the previously mentioned Ice & Lava idea. Just my opinion.

Just to throw my two cents in, I agree with most of you. We definitely need more doors (especially larger double-doors) and wide staircases, even just sold as individual pieces.

As for other settings, sewers would be a relatively easy expansion to their main dungeon line. Ice, lava and forest sets would be great as well.

And then I hit the lotto so I could afford it all.
