It never ceases to amaze me how sets that are still available at Dwarven Forge's web-site end of selling for MORE on e-bay than they cost direct from DF.

Whats going on here?

Is it all about over-seas shipping or what?

Are some people simply unaware of DFs web-presence?

Should DF open a small e-bay store that directs people to the DF web-site?

Do the math!

Example: Medieval Building Set. Price for the set alone: $99

The DF online store is telling me: Handling fees and shipping to Germany for that single set: $100.60 (yes, that is more than the set!)

Then in Germany for example, if the officers at the customs do not categorize it as gaming accessories but as train accessories, you will pay 4,8% customs duty. Of course including the shipping cost.

So we are standing at around: $210

Now the unavoidable VAT applies to that. In Germany 19%, so this raises the end sum for the set to $250 ($240 if you did not have to pay customs duty).

Now how do the eBay prices look in comparison to that? Buying at a European source you even don't have to mess around with the customs office then and you won't have to pay VAT... So there is your answer.

Btw: I don't want to blame anybody for the situation, I just wanted to explain why some people on eBay are paying a lot more than the original price here.

bye

Perhaps it's the inclusion of the door raft? You never know what some people are willing to pay for limited edition stuff.

Right. And he is not shipping outside the US. So why did you mention oversea shipping in the first place?

So I suppose it might have something to do with the door raft then.

The River set and the Lake set he has stated that they are both original releases/first releases.

So the raft might be there as well as the Lizard Ambushers!??

Plus right now for example I have a 10% code off up to a total refund of $100.00 from eBay. Plus total shipping for the lake and river set on these auctions is quoted as $23.10 to Alaska. Which while not as bad as going to Germany to have these to sets sent direct from DWARVEN FORGE to my mother-in-laws is just under $19.00, to my address in Alaska it is quoted at just under $81.00!!!

So here is the math on my side. $129 + $139 = $268 plus best case for having DF ship it to mother-in-law and then have her reship it another $40 to $50 so $308 to $315. For both sets and having to kind of inconvenience my mother in law. (Not to mention CFO / wife would know immediately what I am buying. :O))

Now the price currently on ebay of the two items is getting close to being out of reasonable range.

$150 + $160 = $310 subtract 10%; = $279 .00 then add the quoted shipping of $23.10 I would be paying $302.10. Then the possibility of getting the raft and the Lizard men (if I am understanding they were part of the Lake set originally as pre-orders.) Plus wife doesn't know about purchases = priceless! '

Trust me I would prefer to purchase direct from DF more often if they would just offer USPS service. Which is why I am hoping to pick up stuff at Gencon.

Plus the coupon has really in effect made it where I could stand to pay a little more even though it is equal to what I am truly willing to pay after the discount.

I am currently out bid on them though and probably will not be upping the price any more. And just buy direct from DF at Gencon. I can have four to 6 of the larger sets sent to my address from my mother in laws for about $50.00 Priority Mail. Which recently when I was selling the empty boxes since USPS changed there billing it turned out that they were close to the same amount if they were empty which is just incredible. I guess USPS is charging for empty space which in a round about way I guess makes since but still is incredible.

Gotcha.....so there lots going on "behind the scenes" sometimes that we don't see that might make prices like these much more reasonable.

Wolfzell - I mentioned overseas just b/c I know that the shipping cost is an issue and, even though these auctions aren't offered to ship out of the US, they are not the first sets above retail prices for in stock sets that I have seen on e-bay...so maybe it was an issue prior?

No big deal...just wondering ;)

I think a lot of people don't realize that DF is still in business. I know I have been quite a few places that told me that they were out of business and I corrected them.

Yeah, which makes me think DF should have an E-Bay store too....might (MIGHT) dramatically increase their business......?

Yeah, I think an ebay store would do ok. Don't know what the fee's are for such a thing. My sets that I had for sale went very well but I includded some 3d furnishings " some painted up " with most of my sets.

I know this is ancient post, but here some relevant comments...

I had this problem recently as I'm overseas (US civil servant in Italy, so at an Armed Forces Post Office) and DF doesn't allow APO as a shipping option as most online stores do, even though the US Postal system treats them the same as a stateside address, no extra costs, just shipping time.

But ebay sellers will happily post to APOs and ebay/paypal systems support that--no extra price or issue for them except adding a simple customs form.

So in my big DF expansion so far in 2011, I've ordered 13 sets off ebay, only 2 from DF direct which I couldn't easily get elsewhere--those 2 I ordered to a relative who then shipped again to the APO. That was a hassle paying shipping twice and waiting, but I won't complain too much hearing about the obscene prices to get these to Germany.

So yes, a DF ebay store (which ships to APOs) would be a good idea, or at a minimum adding that option to the main DF website--I can't imagine there would be many overseas APO purchases, but it would only help direct DF vice ebay sales for no additional outlay.

I for one would certainly order direct if it were an option
