First off, the DoE sets are the best sets made. They look great and the quality and uniformity of the pieces is unmatched. Having said that, making a cave layout with caverns and all the river/lake sets make the best looking layouts.

The free standing walls and Chasm sets, IMHO are perhaps the most useful sets. They add that extra 10% to really make the layouts shine. You don't realize how useful all those pieces are until you lay out a nice big spread and can fill in all the nooks and crannies.

Now, a few suggestions.

All sets should have the inventory list and pictures on the outside. Moreover, a packaging diagram sticker should be put on the inside of the top flaps, complete with space for notes (lost/added pieces, etc)

Our layout that used 6 lake sets, 3 chasm, 8 river, 3 lake expansion and lots of cavern sets took longer to put away then the other 70 boxes of stuff.

I think some packing description on the inside is a great idea. But it won't solve the problem for existing sets.

So why not doing the following:
Use the great tile maker program and design these inlets and post them under the map section as PDF for everyone. User then just print them out and glue them in their box.

We just need some volunteers to get it done. All the great beneficiaries of Tile maker program - step forward.

I tried to do this for my own collection as I use boxes as storage and generated maps for them. Well - to be honest - never finished it as with new sets my orders keep changing. At least with DF boxes it will stay the way it is.

I just put a small sticker on the bottom of all my "lake sets" pieces and write a # on the sticker and B for bottom and T for top. I then write the corresponding number on the foam tray (inside the box) in the location where it goes. So, when breaking down a big set, I just flip over all the "lake" pieces and put 1B in the bottom part of "space" 1, 1T on top of it. Using this method, it is just as fast (sometimes faster) to break down 4 boxes of lake stuff as it is to break down 4 boxes of "regular" dungeon...

Works great IF you do that the very first time.

I've taken my lake sets out and have never felt I've been able to get them back exactly as they "should" go....

I don't use the styrofoam (too bulky) and have only had four pieces damaged in transportation (and the roads in the midwest are.... awful!). The four pieces were damages when I dropped them onto concrete, and four others survived intact (all were 4-way cavern passage pieces).

Even the most fragile DOE pieces survived unscratched being very poorly protected, stacked together in a box with little padding.

I now use scrapbook drawers (that are 12 by 12 inches and work perfectly for fitting in DF pieces and a thin layer of foam on top.

This takes my total transportation space from a Train flatbed to a large cargo van.....

I agree that cavern sets are nice, especially with the chasm set and if they are designed in 3-D.
