This is a thought to be pursued in DF's copious spare time, with the spare money they have lying around.

After the Narrow Passages set returns, what about Grand Halls? These would be 4" or 6" wide passages that allow us to more easily construct wide hallways and certain rooms.

Of the two configurations in this set, the first is the Straight Hall. It might be 4"x4", with two walls on opposite edges, or 6"x6" with two walls on opposite edges. These can be placed as passages, or used to define the center portion of a room, or as a "spur" off a very large room (use two standard corners and a straight wall or two to cap the end of the recess).

The Hall Corner has more possible configurations. It might be a 4"x4" piece with two walls on adjacent edges. It might be a 6"x6" piece with a 2"x2" square removed from one corner to form an L shape, with walls on the two outside edges and the two inside edges. Or it might be a 6"x6" piece with two walls on adjacent edges. (I think an 8"x8" L-shape might be a bit much.) While the L shape makes for a better passage corner, the square shape allows the piece to be used as a corner in a large room.

Four corners and four straight sections would make for a good set. Two of each is less versatile, but perhaps more affordable.

I see these as being standard Fantasy Dungeon pieces, but variations on the sculpts and/or accessories might evoke a slightly different environment. Tapestries or stonework might mark the hall as "grand" in the regal sense as well as in size. Torch stands, short pedestals for statues, columns, and so on might make good accessories to line the Grand Halls. (But if these are included, I suggest the 6" width.)

I realize that there are lots of things we want to see before something like this, but does the idea have merits on its own?

I like the idea of a 'grand hall' - but I feel your layout makes the much to restrictive. A 4'' or 6'' wide passage is not necessaryly grand in my eyes.

Why should there be two opposite walls at all (maybe I miss something here). Is there any advantage apart of quicker assembly towards two wall pieces. The disadvantages I see are - less versatile, you can't build it any bigger, storage of these pieces will be an issue if you don't use the white boxes.

Don't get me wrong - I like the general idea - but I would go for onsided walls instead. yes - these walls might even be 6*4 inch to allow a throne on it at the same time or for other purposes that need something extra that 'belongs' to a wall but can't be placed in <2 inch.

But this would allow to build them the way you want (just use two pieces) while adding the possibility to place existing floors inbetween to make the halls even larger.

See your own suggestion about accesories. If you split the walls they will fit - as you are in control to decide on the width of the room.

So have Straight Wall and Corner pieces in expanded sizes, rather than passages.

I have also thought WIDE halls would be really cool for Sci-Fi, make some of those nice long wide corridors you see in the Death Star etc, but honestly a set of passages just for them i think (in either SF or Fan) is er kind of a waste of money.

I'd rather make them out of exsisting walls and floor tiles and not do a specific set of Big wide passages. As Passages stand now the loss of the 1/2 inch due to the 1/4 inch of walls on the edges added onto the footprint of the makes matching things up harder... I know that it isn't that big a deal to have "blank spaces" between rooms and passages, but i think things just mesh up and look so much better (and you get doulbe use out of your walls) with the wall of a pasage having it's otherside be the wall of a room.... So i'd rather just make a Grand hall with exsisting floors dropping into a space...

Passages work best ONLY if they are exact mates for room pieces. That may eventually result in their being phased out in all DF genres. Either that, or adapter pieces such as what Tony Griffon made for the Sci-Fi passage sections will be factory-supplied by DF (I suspect Stefan is close to such an arrangement with Tony, but NEVER quote me on that; I've spent too much of my life as a wild guesser). Otherwise, the passage pieces never mate with anything EXCEPT more passages - great for true undergrounds, but terrible for structures. And structures seem to have become the meat and potatoes of what most of us DO with our DF!
Stefan: Take note here, okay?

Bigger floors could help build multi-level buildings
