I am in the middle of DM'ing a Conan D20 Campaign and the PC's (a gang of thieves and rogues) have been doing a lot of breaking and entering. I have been using the MBS set and would like to suggest the following ideas as things I feel are currently 'missing' for the set ups we needed.

Garden tiles with garden wall and exterior wall door tiles.
Gazebo/plant pots/green house area tiles/plonk down pieces.
A toilet (I know this isn't historically accurate but I could still have done with one!) tile/piece.
A stables/straw bales tile/pieces with wooden booths for the horses.
A six long, one deep floor piece to use as a narrow balcony.
A posh marble floor for a ballroom.
A narrow passage MBS piece.
Outside/inner courtyard floor tile.

What do the rest of the gang think?

Dave

P.S. - I'm not whining, the MBS sets are fantastic, i'm just being greedy in wanting more! :) :)

I think you mention four or five tile types that would involve creating a new line for each of them.

Any large vase, pitcher, or other crockery can be used for a chamberpot. Toilets were not unheard of in medieval times, but they were really just holes in a bench over a hole in a wall or floor -- gravity (and a pitcher of water poured after) took the refuse to a midden or waterway. So a box or a small stone block with a hole dremeled into the top might also serve.

For a marble floor, go to the dollhouse section in your local craft store and see what they have.

Stables can now be simulated by placing wooden railings perpendicular to a wall, parallel to each other.

A gazebo is a standalone piece -- try a hobby shop that sells model train supplies, and ask for something in the HO or S scale.

Of all of the suggestions made, I think this is the only one that seems practical without having to release a bunch of new stuff. The problem with marble floors and such is that they require marble walls, fancy doors, and so on....

But with a few pieces added to an accesory set.. one could have very cool looking stables....

David;

A few years ago I saw a guy selling miniature chess sets with marble boards; the sets were small enough that the boards were roughly 6" x 6". I wound up buying a full-size set, but IF I see a small one, shall I grab it for you, and how much are you willing to go to get it - purchase price, not shipping?
Let me know, and I'll keep an eye out at flea markets, etc. Of course, I may grab one for myself, and then you'd have to hope the guy has TWO for sale!

Also, have you considered making your own? Lay out a 1" x 1" grid of heavy darning thread in a mold box made of Legos or something similar. Pour your resin or plaster and when cured, de-mold it and paint it in black and white, then gloss clearcoat.
TA-DA!

Just an idea.

Some of these ideas, I really like. Some of them are available from other companies, too, which means we don't need to wait for DF to get to them (though, as always, if they do, I'll be happy).

Garden tiles with garden wall and exterior wall door tiles.

- I'd put that under "exterior pieces," a set I've asked for on several occasions.

Gazebo/plant pots/green house area tiles/plonk down pieces.

- Tricky. A standalone gazebo, as has been pointed out, is pretty much out there, if you're dedicated enough to hunt. The rest -- well, it seems a bit too limited. I don't know how many people would want a modular greenhouse.

A toilet (I know this isn't historically accurate but I could still have done with one!) tile/piece.

- I'm willing to suspend disbelief on this one. I suppose if Stefan wanted to put one in the 10th MBS accessory set, it'd be a cute thing to have, but I'm not really yearning for it.

A stables/straw bales tile/pieces with wooden booths for the horses.

- That is available from JR minis, right now. I've painted a few up, some of them can be spotted in my older MBS threads on Cool Photos. There's even a thread just dedicated to showcasing JR minis stuff.

A six long, one deep floor piece to use as a narrow balcony.

- Hm, not sure how useful it would be, or how popular, but I'd dig it. It'd still be useful for regular room-building, after all. Then again, lining up single floor pieces isn't that hard. What I'd REALLY like to see would be some MBS long walls, like fantasy, SF, and DoE have been given. THAT would make stacking MBS much easier, and it seems like one of hte best sets for multiple-level building....

A posh marble floor for a ballroom.

- You know, people are talking about alternate ways to get this, but I'd love to see DF do it. Modular floor pieces in marble -- I'd like to see it as part of the suggested "Haven of Goodness" counterpart to the DoE. Something that could be an elven palace or a planar world oriented around goodness, etc. Nice white walls, polished marble floor, gold inlays etc.

A narrow passage MBS piece.

- At this point, ANY narrow passage set would be nice. A reissue of hte original, sometihng for SF, something for MBS, whatever. I think the SF and MBS ones could be really cool -- the MBS set could show more wood poking through the wall, and the SF one could be full of exposed wiring, like it's some kind of conduit not meant for human passage....

Outside/inner courtyard floor tile.

- See above -- another exterior element I'd love to see. I'd love to see things like cobblestone floors, courtyard walls, building signs, those shutters released as a regular item, anything to allow us to make full-on towns with DF pieces. Sure, other companies make the stuff, but that doesn't mean DF wouldn't be able to do something really special with it. I think the DF faithful would snap them up in a second.

DF can't make every niche product you might imagine. Not all of them would be profitable.

Sure I would like them to make a lot of stuff, but I think it is better to make your own special things to complement DF when you need them, instead of waiting for them to (maybe) make it.

Like I did with the roofs, and other modules and accessories.

If you are talent impaired, you can still make something nice with products like Hirst Art, which takes a lot of time and effort, but make nice complement to DF, even with limited talent.

I agree -- but when you put it that broadly, who wouldn't agree?

The question is, "Would a 'Township Set' be profitable?'"

And I have no idea what the answer to that is. I really don't. But I do think these forums are a great place to get unscientific data about what fans want. If lots of forum members like the idea, then we would have an indication -- not definitive evidence, but at least SOME evidence -- that it would be profitable. If everyone shoots it down, it seems like a poor idea.

I mean, we can identify a pattern. The SF sets did not sell that well. The MBS sets, on the other hand, were very popular. The MBS stuff has brought people over to DF, and really given the company momentum. An expansion pack that would greatly expand upon what can be done with it might be a good idea -- sort of like a corollary to the role the caverns set play with the dungeon sets. With the caverns, you can excavate below the dungeon and do a whole new genre that still can make use of your dungeon sets. The same could be said for a township set. And I'm not talking about a whole new line -- just a single expansion pack that could include some basic elements that would really give the MBS extra kick.

I agree that a lot of things can be done on our own, or found with other companies -- but then, look at the Tavern set that's been shown. TONS of excitement over it, lots of people planning to buy, and to be honest, it looks like about 60-75% of that set is currently available, from at least 2 or 3 companies. Fenryll, Grendel, Reaper all make similar products, and what they don't make could be easily customized with green stuff or bought at any shop that carries dollhouse furniture or model railroad accessories.

I guess my point is just this: there are lots of good rules of thumb, but there are also exceptions to them, and a really good way to test ideas and see what might work is through people talking about stuff on the forums. I'm certainly not screaming that I'll boycott DF if they don't make a township set -- just like David, I love the stuff I have and I'd continue to love it if DF closed up shop today and said there'd never be another set. I'm just floating out ideas to see what people think, just because I DO love this stuff so much, and it's fun to brainstorm about wish lists.

L, I absolutely LOVE the "marble" floor idea! That would make some cool possibilities and most likely crossover into building potential for DOE as well. Your township courtyard or ballroom floor could also be MY wizard's library or vampire crypt floors!

Cool!

I guess one of the major sellling points for me about DF is it's generic nature and the ability to utilize them everywhere in all my gaming.

However, while that is a definite plus, it is also a negative for it as well. THe dungeon stuff as well as the sci fi can be a little generic. And sometimes, it's hard to picture how to put it all together into the amazing set ups I have seen on the site. Sci fi is probably worse than generic master maze stuff because whilel everybody knows dungeons, sci fi is a genre that is a little harder to capture. But also, in sci fi, a lot of the terrain is created by set dressing rather than by the walls themselves.

I recently managed to get my hands on an Ogre's den. Many thanks to Harneloot for his help on that matter :) And in some ways a set like that really put DF into perspective for me. I can't say its because the pieces was ultimately useful. It really isn't and is very limited in what you can do with it. However, with a fully dresssed piece like the Den, you kind of get a idea or a central piece to build upon. In the long term, I probably won't need a support like this, but its something to build upon in the early days. OUt of curiosity, how well recieved was it as an individual set/piece? Was it a good seller? No different to the other sets out there? Or a total dud?

With regards to the MBS, I have yet to play with mine, even though I have ordered the new expansion set, but I assume one of the reasons why it has gone down so well is ppl have no problems envisioning buildings and how they set up. We all have in our minds what a fantasy village would roughly look like, what to expect, etc. It's just a matter of putting the imagination to work.

So, from my point of view, I personally wouldn't mind perhaps a few more individual room pieces :) As mentioned in a previous thread, something like a crypt, or a throne room, or something like that. Perhaps make it a limited edition lilke DoE if it is not popular?

Now that someone mentions doing the marble as the "Haven of Goodness" or whatever, I can see that. A limited edition set... probably 1000 or 1500 sets made. It could double as the planar of goodness, a royal palace, a fancy cathedral, and a rich persons home... are reasonable gaming locations....

I am also thinking that it should be passage free... as none of the above locations would really have long winding corridors leading from room to room, they would be built like a real building, with corridors being much smaller and rooms right on the other side of each other.

Hello All,

There have been 1 or 2 threads about teh HOG/throne room etc set. I am all for this. I am undecided on the passages but if you do not do passages then you at least need transition pieces. I would leave this up to Stefan's artistic choice. However here is the order we know about now

tavern set
water expansion set

Will there be any other surprises? Stefan has also talked about a door set, additional beds, and revisting the original dungeons with an expansion. Egyption and mayan were also muttered. Whatever he does next I am waiting for the hints and preorder....

Keep up the great work Stefan.
