I created the last spreadsheet that was posted here. :) Someone from the forum requested I update (as I had originally planned on doing but hadn't gotten around to doing) the spreadsheet with the latest sets and pieces. I'm in the process of updating it now. The big issue with it, however, was that if you sorted the pages, it killed the tracking. Hence, I wanted to look at something more versitile (sp).

What would be nice to do is use something like an Access DB or Excel spreadsheet and export it as XML and to be able to import it into the TileSystem. I wouild love to see these things work together. I don't see the Tilesystem as an inventory tracking system - though it is great for what it was designed for, making layouts of whatever tiles you want to use!

Okay...well, on to adding to my existing spreadsheet. I'll let you know if I find/learn something more versitile.

John;

Keep it up and you're liable to get me to do it - which I've been avoiding for over 2 years!
I guess I can't duck and dodge forever.

Jim -

I found a "Form II" version of the spreadsheet I was working on. It's better than the original, which is still the only version available on my web site. I am updating this "Form II" version with the new products, missing information, etc..
You can tell I don't get to play with my toys (or don't make the time to play with them) as often as I'd like. If I used them, I would have already revamped things such that a quick export from my spreadsheet worked with TileSystem. I have something in mind. It means a little tweaking, but it would be worth it.

I'll keep you posted as I make progress.

Cool!
Let me know if you think an Access database is warranted. I may wind up snitching the pics from TileSystem, IF LoneStarr doesn't get upset by it. I would credit him publicly in the db if I do, but I won't use them at all if he objects.

Guys,

As I no longer program I often shy away from it. If you two do an access db any chance that we can export the access DB to xml so those of us that use mysql can import it into our engine. I am debating if I want to come up with a web based random room generator based on real inventory. I would need teh db though. Let me know.

See...I know this much -><- about XML, but from what little I read about it this weekend, it is the way to go for cross-platform usability. I think it would work great with something like the TileSystem too. I forget the TS specifics, but it wouldn't be too difficult to set TS to read an XLM export from an Access DB or Excel spreadsheet.

Arg...I really don't feel like teaching myself database stuff...but maybe...maybe...

I THINK(?) I can export XML from Access, I'm not SURE; I use Access 2000, since we're stuck with that at work (for now!), and also, it is more portable with later, newer versions of Access. And I'M cheap, too; I hate paying M$ prices.
I will take a look at a db, but I HAVE to wait for permission from LoneStarr to use his pictures of individual parts; I will NOT steal another man's work. Well, okay, I won't steal it when he's been as cool as LS has been about doing the stuff.
It won't be fast, as I have multiple other projects on the fire; D&D game for Shore Leave 29, MarauderCon and Chapter President for IPMS/Baltimore, and I DO have to work occasionally; they get real sticky about paying me if I don't.
Keep after me, though, and it'll probably get done faster.

Jim

Update: LoneStarr says no problem on using his photos, and he didn't even insist on me crediting them (but I do, so he will get credit for every photo of his I use).

More later.

I'll throw another suggestion out there... Oracle Express Edition. It's free, and it has a version of Oracle Application Express (which has some nifty features that let you import an excel spreadsheet and turn it right into an HTML user interface for modifying the data). Now I'll admit that it may be a bit of overkill, but may be worth looking at. Also, it's fairly straightforward to create xml dumps of the database (not point-and-click, but fairly simple programming).
