L,
Thanks for the picture. The books are quite large, but in a lot of ways, not that unimaginable.

Although, I would prefer a larger pile, but I guess it's a matter of grabbing more stacks of books and piling together :)

Thats one cool set up you put a link to though :)

That's a Fenryll piece -- comes unpainted. It's probably the nicest bookcase piece out there, though I like the Grendel one that I have also. But the Fenryll one is extremely nice. I want to get at least one more, maybe two, so I can do a little library of my own. It's a BIT rustic -- things aren't completely neat and sharp -- but it isn't too bad.
I also wouldn't mind if it had more books on it, esp. neatly stacked. If I did get another two, I'd probably use some green stuff to put more books on the shelves, neatly arranged.

And actually, this other pic of the same setup shows the Reaper book pile even better -- and you can see it's about as wide as the DF columns! Half an inch by half an inch -- the biggest book in the pile is approximately three feet by three feet! I'm sure there are precedents for this, especially if these are religious tomes, but still. Man, that's some book!

(this series of pics also shows off the Fenryll bookshelf pretty well...)

Large tomes might be illuminated texts of any sort, or plans for ancient feats of engineering, or large and detailed illustrations of natural features from geography to zoology to anatomical studies (life-size, of course).

Just for yucks, figure out how much two pieces of 3'x3'x1" hardwood weigh, then add the weight of a single pack of copier paper times twelve to figure out how much a book like that weighs. (Throw in a pound or two for ink.) Then make a set of such books the principle treasure in your dungeon and watch the party try to lug them out. Throw in plenty of bookly hazards to navigate on the way out, like fire and water and lakes of ink and swarms of silverfish.

Thanks!

Does anyone here remember bookworms? They were the bane of wizards in the old days, as they literally ate their way through spellbooks and other tomes of lore. Bigby even developed a spell to combat them, called Bigby's Bookworm Bane, which conjured a disembodied hand that searched through your library and crushed the little vermin.

Heck, they've just brought back rot grubs in Dungeonscape, so why not bookworms?

As an aside, anyone who likes near-historical, modern, or sci-fi might want to consider the Heroclix accessory set with a bookcase full of books, plus some other current tech stuff.
It's anachronistic for pure fantasy settings, but it IS a bookcase - 6' plus tall, 10' wide, and filled. Perfect for a library or a bookstore.

Yeah, that Heroclix set has some neat stuff in it. And I've always meant to paint the bookcase a darker brown -- that'd be enough to take away its "contemporary" feel. Wizkids used to make some really cool fantasy accessories, back when MK was their bread and butter. They made some really funky dungeon accessories, really fantastic (and cheap!) modular castle components... sigh.

And yes, Harneloot, the Fenryll bookshelf is the one on the upper left -- tall, wide, really great stuff. As I talk about this one more and more, I really feel like I need to snag another one!

L -

I once did a game at Shore Leave where the village was set up inside the MK castle walls, with my custom scratchbuilt keep in the middle.
What p!$$ed all the gamers off was when they had to go BACK to the gatehouse and enter the tunnel under the grounds to get into the keep!
Whee! What fun.
