Well, sadly, I have to admit that I didn't do the Snake King setup -- that was Invincible Overlord, I believe. He's the one who can do those fantastic layouts with tons of great accessories.
L

Oh, my apology to both you and Invincible Overlord. I'm new here and still feeling my way around.

Anyway, we are disagreeing about nothing because it seems clear that both you and myself are so addicted to Stefan's output that we will buy what ever that cruel bastard deigns to deliver. :)

Ah, the junkie's life for me.

Thank you Gary for the many great suggestions actually...in fact I agree with both of you. I need to come out with more doors, and I also need to come out with more "environments" Gary, I think what you pointed out was true...doors can go a long way in explaining what a room is all about, and L, it's also true that one would like more than just a door to dress up the "meat" of the interior...in going to keep this in mind when the next true "dungeon" set comes around...I think one answer would be to do, say, a snakeish entrance or door+ a snakeish like altar to go with it...+ a boarded up door + some crude junk, etc, to put in the interiors...+ one can also add to that by using some of the accessories from past sets as well...And then of course, some Doors just demand whole environmant to go with it...like the Egyptian Modular tomb... (with monsters and treasures)..............

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'll try to make it a reality. having a forum like this with such constructive and stimulating debate has become a real driving force here at DF!

The only difficulty we have is really just, having SO MANY great ideas and not enough time or funds to make them all at once:) One of our biggest difficulties is trying to decide which kool idea to do next! Of course, that's a great problem to have:) I also believe that if we COULD do all these things at once many of our collectors brains and wallets would just explode....very messy....

Stefan, the great thing about having many ideas (both your own and fan suggestions) to execute is that you have more to pick and choose from. We'll probably buy everything you make, but you are right that there if you made them all at once most of us could not afford to buy them all. Still, as a fan of your products I am very happy about the steady pace at which you are doing new sets.

Some doors are sufficiently generic that they would go very nicely in a Fantasy Doors Set. Double doors, a giant-size door, an iron door, a battered door, a boarded (or bricked) up door, or a door with magical wards on it, even a circular door, all fit into this category. And a door set would be a nice little set to supplement DF collectors' holdings, and might attract attention from new customers for use with HA or other items. I would try to keep the cost between $30 and $60.

But some environments are too complex or too different to evoked by just a door. A dwarven door with runes, a glowing door leading to a magically charged room, a crude door, a serpent door, and a tomb door with skulls, all require additional pieces to evoke an atmosphere -- otherwise, they'll look isolated and out of place.

For these, I still recommend my "Rooms" approach. Create small sets with pieces committed to evoking an atmosphere or environment, that allow the customer to buy one set (to get the point across) or multiple sets (for multiple rooms, large areas, or immersion). The simplest version of such a set is a door, and three straight wall pieces that have decoration in the same motif -- that's four pieces, each of which can be centered in one wall of a rectangular room. The next step up is to add four themed corner pieces -- that's eight pieces, enough to create a small room, or to make every other piece of a decent size room a specialty piece. The final option is to add a floor piece, also decorated thematically -- I like 6"x6" for this, but that's me. At any size, I also like the idea of having one or two freestanding accessories.

Take the crude orcish door. For the wall pieces, I would rough up the stonework and add crude supports. For the corners, perhaps lean-tos built against the walls as private shelters. The floor piece would be littered with bones and stains and refuse. For freestanding pieces, perhaps a crude idol, or a pile of stolen gear, or a big cookfire with something questionable on a spit.

For the dwarvish theme, simply add runes or carvings to each piece -- walls, corners, floors. For the accessory, a stone table with stone chairs.

For the tomb with skulls, put skulls on or around the door, and in niches in the walls and corners. The floor might be littered with bones or skulls, or it might have inset rectangular stones with markings (graves). Add one or two sarcophagi for the accessories.

A magical room might have a door with glowing (bright/neon color, possibly black-light sensitive paint?) details between the boards and seams. The walls might have seals with glowing runes on them (each a different color?). The corners might have braziers. The floor would be a complex casting circle (or multiple, intersecting circles). The accessory might be a bookstand with a tome, or a large crystal ball on a stand, or something more esoteric.

The details in the examples aren't as important as the concept. A small set, between five and eleven pieces, would not be very expensive, and would go a long way towards evoking the environments we want to see without creating a new line for every conceivable decor or theme. (If a particular set receives a huge response, however, then perhaps it could be expanded to a line at a later date.) These could be done as limited runs, or they might be produced on a long rotation (restock each room every three years, say).

Finally, there are doors that just don't work at all without an entirely new line to go with them. No matter how well an Egyptian door is done, I'm never going to believe any of the existing DF lines as an Egyptian tomb or temple. They weren't sculpted to look like Egyptian architecture, and no amount of dressing up will change that. Rather than try to put a bunch of Egyptian accessories in the Fantasy-European or Lovecraftian/Geigeresque DF lines, I'd rather wait if/until DF decides to make a specific line devoted to Egyptian motifs.

I agree, and I think the "rooms" idea is a great one. And I'm right there with you on Egyptian stuff -- clearly, DF would have to start a whole new line for that. Given the amount of stuff we want to see, it's something that just can't be on the horizon for some time. Plus, it's so SPECIFIC, it would seem to have more limited appeal. But of course, all that said, I'd love to see it, just like I'd love to see anything from DF. There are already tons of Egyptian minis out there, most from smaller companies but Reaper has done a handful, Grendel has made accessories, and GW has a whole army dedicated to it. And of course HA has made some phenomenal molds for Egyptian architecture.

If DF ever did decide to take the plunge, I'd recommend to Stefan that he buy some stock in these other companies first!

Me, I'm just trying to keep track of everything that we already know is coming! Water expansion set, tavern expansion set, SF furnishings, one more DoE set, some kind of new dungeon set (with new doors).... And remember that the MBS was sprung on us with no hints or clues that anything like it was coming at all! So who knows what secret stuff Stefan is cooking up?

I have amassed almost 40 sets since September but I have NO NEW NON-DETACHABLE DOORS!!! Its absurd I tell you!

I am almost pulling my hair out to try to figure out how to put doors in my expansive set-ups...

I'd love to see all the different doors mentioned released at some point....but PLEASE - bring the regular doors back in stock ASAP!!!

Now this is an item that has been needed for a long time. The "new" door is way too large. It is for all intents and purposes a Giant Door already. The only true sized door to scale is the narror door in the advanced builder. A low priced door set would be handy.
