In what order would you purchase Dwarven Forge sets? 9 Years, 11 Months ago
I'm looking for suggestions from everybody on what the best way to build/expand on a Dwarven Forge collection is.

I just received the Rooms and Passage set which, while really impressive, doesn't allow for too much (on its own). So I find myself thinking about what set to get next. So far, I'm considering either the Octagonal Room Set, the Wicked Additions Set or the Narrow Passages Set (If I can find one).

How did you guys start out your collection?

Thanks,

Doesn't really matter you'll catch the bug and get them all eventually!

But really, I think what you'd need next is a room set and then the wicked additions are nice. The traps arent really needed till you have all the basic ones.

I'd say definitely get either WA1 or WA2, depending on which you like more. I'd actually reccommend getting both before anything else -- the most interesting pieces, IMHO, are in those sets. The traps and the "advanced builder" pieces are nice enough, but nothing tops the spiral stairs, the demon arch, the mermaid fountain....

I definetely had by eyes on both Wicked Additons sets... the problem being which one to pick up first. I've got a feeling my weird attraction to water terrain elements in wargaming will make me pick up the one with the Mermaid fountain, although I've heard nothing but good things about the green Demon Arch... *sigh* Mentionning all the sets isn't helping at all! :P

Get the cavern set first. Every game eventually ends up in a dark cave...

1) Caverns. (Buy this TODAY)

2) Wik-Ed 1

3) Wik-Ed 2

These will be most useful, "most" of the time.

The Traps Sets are nice but can be replaced/simulated with imagination.

Adv. Build, Narrow Pass, Diagnel, ogres den, sets are probably "least" useful. They are luxury items. :D

Ok, so my priorities list has changed after the following posts :)
Right now, fighting for first place is the Cavern Set (looks great, really useful) and the Narrow Passages set (good variety, OOP)...

How useful are the Cavernous Passages set compared to getting a second Caverns Set?

Thanks,

The cavernous passages are a beautiful set. Though they can be a little narrow at times. I wouldnt get the narrow passages quite yet.

Get the Caverns set.

"waiting......... looks at watch......."

Ok, Now if your choice is between another Cavern and the Cavernous passages. I would get the Cavern passages. Here's why:

The two together are just great. They were designed to be used togther (I assume) You can make passages suddenly open into larger caves. Carvens should be totally unlike your ridged and straight "Dungeons". They need to keep the PCs guessing. "Is this little passage going to lead into a huge lair?"

Neat trick is to use your Caverns set to make two semi-large caves and then connect them with a narrow & winding "Cavernous Passage" (C-Pass)

The C-Pass comes with two "conversion pieces" these are really normal 4 wide Caverns pieces that go narrow (2 wide) These actually get you more bang for your buck when making big caves. These are the coolest pieces in the set because they are so good at making a cavern area very natural looking. They block LOS and force character to move carefully.

Two Cavern sets are great but I feel you would have more fun with the greater variaty you can make with getting a C-Pass set.

There is another "Why Caverns are so great" thread around here somewhere. Read that too. Guess who wrote that one??? :D

Let me know how pleased you are after you use these. ;)

I'm going to take the contra-view here and put this in:

Rooms and Passages
Master Builder's Set
Wicked Additions #2
Wicked Additions #1
Cavernous Passages
Cavern Set

Then add a second Rooms and Passages set.

Then I'd start padding things out with "extra" hallway lengths, etc.
