I guess that, based on the amount of chatter on the forums and the recent revelation that nearly all the original DoE sets have sold, it is now an appropriate time for us all to start discussing the sequel (Son of DoE? :)) as it seems likely to be a good seller for DF.

In my view, it should be compatable with DoE and even, possibly offer a transition feel to the regular dungeon stuff. Somewhere inbetween the comparatively plain dungeon range and the very detailed DoE range. I was recently playing an old Playstation 2 computer game called return to Baldurs Gate and there is a section within the game where you have to 'clear out' an old, haunted and undead riddled mansion. I think this would be an ideal DoE 2 visual style. It could even marry up with the MBS range as an "evil MBS?"

Rotting, blood spattered runner carpets, gothic windows, tapestries hanging from the walls, half wood panelled walls, portraits with moving eyes, wooden pillars, full length wall book cases, huge canopy beds. The floors could be 'two style' with compatible wooden and stone options, with some of them carpeted.

This range might be used in a dungeon as DoE to Dungeon transition, as living quarters for the cultist nasties who occupy the actual DoE or it could be used as the 'secret' parts of an MBS or as a stand alone haunted mansion 'evil MBS' range.

What do you guys think?

Dave :)

I think that is a GREAT idea! One of the best ideas I have heard for another possible set.

Well, don't get me wrong, it would be truly amazing, but I'd rather prefer to have some "non-inherent-evil" stuff... some near deluxe-dungeon, that way, changing only some accesories, if the sets would be designed carefully, could even work for some kind of "fantasy-egyptian" environment, dwarven cities, good temples, palaces... etc.

Only two cents...

That is true too. Really, I think we need more DF accessory sets like the upcomming Tavern set. It would be cool to have a kind of "evil / haunted" mansion set with coffins, spider webbed bookshelves ect. Something like that which would go nicely in the DenofEvil.

That's an interesting idea, though I'm not sure I want to see any "new" styles from DF before they flesh out currently running ones. More SF, more MBS, more cavernous water sets, and much more DoE would all need to be seen before a "sequel" to any of the current themes comes out.

Having said that, I was just thinking of asking a question about the DoE myself.

The WA set offers some really nice flashy stuff to put in the DoE, and the upcoming Room Set clearly brings things up to a new level. But I'm still curious -- where would DoE fans like to see the set go from here?

1. Something similar to what was suggested here -- a "transitional" set that incorporates the "feel" of the DoE, but allows it to integrate with sets like the MBS or even the SF stuff.

2. Some more useful elements, combining the best room-building pieces from the first three sets, and maybe adding more a la the Advanced Builder Set. Long walls, big floors, half-walls, narrow doorways, etc. We like the set as it is, but we want it to be more flexible, and we need more basic building elements, evenly distributed (i.e. not having to buy BOTH WA and RS to get the big floors and walls, meanwhile accumulating more "flash" like the pit or the cauldrons, which we don't need as many of)

3. Some more flashy stuff! The big pit, the flaming bowls, bring it on! How about an X, Y, or Z??!!

4. Some "furnishings" of some kind. Right now, there's really no way to distinguish one DoE room from another -- none of them serve a purpose. We need something like what is available for the dungeon and MBS stuff, that allows us to make a throne room, a torture chamber, a wizard's study, a magiks laboratory, etc. Some furnishings or building elements that lend the DoE rooms a particular identity, instead of being all essentially the same.

Personally, one of my chief objections to the DoE, that kept me from getting tons of it, was the lack of #4. If all the rooms are going to be essentially identical, I can't see why I need more than 3 or 4 of them. With the MBS or dungeon sets, I can make so many different kinds of room, I need the building elements to do them all. With this, it can start to seem pointless. The DoE is like a more elaborate Ogre's Den for me -- a great item, but more of a decorative change of pace within another dungeon than a whole system on its own. Within a regular dungeon, there'd be these evil magic chambers -- but I don't need a whole dungeon MADE of them, since they all look basically the same.

But the more I think about it, the more I think DoE could be a kind of Cavern set, not a kind of dungeon set. The caverns, after all, don't need "rooms." As a vaguely planar set, the DoE has a kind of (super)natural quality to it, like the cavern set -- it's a wild environment to be explored, not a fortress. To the extent that it is an artifact of some kind, it still doesn't seem like a proper "living" space, so it still wouldn't need rooms any more than caverns do. As long as we can keep things interesting along the same lines -- decorative flourishes are more important than actual furniture or accessories that say "this is what is meant to be done in this room." The various rock formations and river and lake elements in the caverns provide tons of variety and interest, without ever stipulating a "purpose" for a "room" and maybe the DoE should follow that model.

So that's my question -- what do people want? More basic building elements? More flashy stuff like the pit? More furniture/accessories to give rooms a unique identity?

For DOE I vote for more furniture/accessories to personalize the rooms.

I'd love to see another accessory set and/or WA3 for the Fantasy line as well...Wizards laboratory, forge, armory, new doors (or even, for the love of zeus, some more of the non-detachable doors i never got any of!!!) Dwarven Mine, throne room, torture chamber, hallways with doors in the middle of them, another transition piece for caverns/rivers, more neat walls along the lines of the foountain, etc....

Personally, the transitional elements don't appeal to me. I think mainly because there's so many different transition types that if you try to make transitions you'll likely be disappointed by missing out on that one you really need. I'd rather just 'cheat' and transition at a doorway. But that's just my preference.

Furnishings/accessories is something I think all the sets could use more of, not just DOE (Sci-Fi especially!). Altars, evil statues, thrones, wizard's lab...

An advanced builder set is something that I would probably buy for DOE, but it's not at the top of my list.

Yes! Me too. I know that many people on this forum say that we can buy Grendel ect. additions, but I want DF accessories! Pre-painted with precise attention to details ect. I don't have time to paint anymore due to my work. I just want to be able to get accessories and use them. (with plasti-crack of course)

I'd also add that I don't think any accessories that are out right now -- or at least very, very few of them -- would really "work" in the DoE environment. The stuff Grendel puts out, for the most part, is very traditional -- which means it works well with Reaper minis and "classic" DF, but it really doesn't quite belong in the DoE.

To be honest, I'm not sure what kinds of furnishings WOULD work in the DoE -- does this really seem like the kind of place you'd encounter a bedroom? A library? A mess hall?

I suppose there are some things -- wizard's accessories, magic portals, things like that, and of course torture devices. But I'd be curious to hear what kinds of rooms people would like to put together with the DoE.

In my opinion, another DOE WA set would be welcomed for some added room options. I would leave the mundane furniture dressings to the MBS line though. There were several ideas already mentioned here in this thread that made my ears perk up a bit...

...if Stefan DOES follow through with such a set, I would LOVE to see this set geared towards "the place beyond", if you guys know what I mean...the place that lies beyond that huge EYE in the wall!

It's difficult to guess what is in the mind of the artist here or the direction such a set could go, but I would love to see this realm open up to something DARK & SINISTER. More so than what has been already seen. This IS the den of EVIL, after all. I could easily see some new designs within this yet-to-be-seen-realm to have a blood-drenched altar and dis-embodiments hanging from chains and manacles attached to the walls. Give me some blood and gore, Baby! *laughs* ...some kind of sacrificial room or torture chamber feel to it. Maybe the walls and flooring are similar but more dark and twisted (black tentacles coming out of the stone-work???).

It's fun throwing some stuff out there -- especially for the dungeon line that is quickly becoming my favorite of the lot! Whatever is decided with the direction that such a set could take, I'm ready to pre-order now!

~Cheers
