Hi guys,

I hate sending business away from DF but if you're really interested in a gladiatorial arena, check out Steve Barber's site at:

www.sbarber-models.clara.net/html/25mmgladiators.html

There's an online merchant here in the United States that carries this arena at: (scroll down to 25MM Gladiators & Weapons)

Yeah, $180 but worth every penny. I picked this up a year ago or so. I have one part painted so far but got side tracked on other projects.

It's a very, very heavy resin piece that was probably really difficult to manufacture, hence the price. Once you start getting into big buildings like this, the price for goods goes up considerably.

There's a reeeeally cool pirate ship I'd love to buy from Old Glory but it's $250. I'd have to cook an awful lot of dinners for the wife, not to mention do a LOT of house cleaning to even think about *asking for permission* to buy that one. ;-}P~

That's a lot of money for something that wouldn't be used all that often. If I'm gonna spend the money, I want something that is going to get a lot of use.

Depends on your gaming habits I guess. There are at least two sets of rules for "Gladiator" war games / FRP that you can use to run combats. Once I'm done painting mine I'll wind up using it for the desert continent in my fantasy RPG.

Can't wait to get some of the group onto the sand in front of seasoned veterans... heh heh

It's not even painted? I picked up a painted very detailed Halfling House for a LOT less. Hardly worth it IMHO.

I really (REALLY) hope DF considers putting this out. My jaw was on the floor when I saw it at Gencon last year, and I've been coveting it ever since.

True, only a select few would buy it, but I'm sure we could drum up enough buyers to make it worthwhile to produce.

Don't make me beg. It's not a pretty sight.

The problem is the number of units they would have to produce to make it cost effective. Only a limited few probably wouldn't be enough. As nice as the piece is I doubt it would be on my buy list as costly as it would be and its limited use.

Here's my humble opinion on this much talked about coliseum. Please read it *carefully* before you misinterpret my missive and get offended:

It does definitely sound like the type of piece that only serious gamers or collectors would buy (or could afford to buy). Not to say that those who wouldn't purchase it or couldn't afford it aren't "serious" gamers--I don't want to start a flame war here, I'm just expressing my opinion based on the probable cost of the piece and the "limited use" messages posted here.

I also think that one has to approach this type of piece differently than you would a run-of-the-mill building or other terrain piece. It's what I refer to as a "fixture" type of terrain--one that has a more permanent place in a DM's world. I have a whole desert continent designed and fleshed out and my coliseum plays a very major role in adventures on that continent. Obviously it is used for gladitorial type combat, but the cool thing is that I have also found many other uses for it in my game: a place to try prisoners, a market/commerce/bazaar center, a public meeting forum, an entertainment arena, a livestock auction house, and even a slave auction house.

I guess I find it disheartening to see posts condemning a piece like this to "limited use." Where's the creativity guys? I know it wouldn't fit everybody's world/campaign but the spirit of RPGs is to *create* worlds... Hell, even pre-designed modules are simply guidelines that can be modified and enhanced with your own backgrounds and props.

In the words of Forrest Gump, "And that's all I have to say about that."

Well I am definitely not offended. I respect everyone's right to an opinion. I have lots of pieces, minitatures and books that don't get used or rarely used do to their limited scope. I might end up buying it at some point, but would rather have more "to me" useful items like the cavern lakes and rivers, a cavern Wicked Editions, that type of thing. It isn't a question of imagination, as much as I mostly use premade modules and their is little call for an arena in most of them.

I think you've pretty much nailed it, Dante. I agree that this is for "serious gamers" only. No reason for anyone to be offended by that way of putting it, as I see it. If you can spend the money on a piece of fixed scenery like that, you're a pretty serious gamer.

For me, the chief problem isn't that it's an arena, but that it's pretty non-modular. Sure, there are limited varieties, but nothing like what you can achieve with the basic dungeon and cavern pieces. For me, the chief appeal of DF has always been the infinite display possibilities, and this wouldn't have that.

But it WOULD be a great setting for what you've described. If it were slightly cheaper, and if DF made things like food/merchant carts to convert the arena to a marketplace (on the weekdays!) it'd be pretty darn tempting. . .
