Octagonal Room Set Revamp? 8 Years, 2 Months ago

The Octagonal Room Set is no longer available. It is not even listed on the main DF website anymore. Diagonal Corners (two of them) are only available in the Fantasy Starter Set they can't be bought as individual pieces.
The original Octagonal Room Set contained:
6 Diagonal Corners
12 Straight Walls
11 Floor Tiles
2 Doors
x bowtie connectors
I miss the Diagonal Corners they are great for making octagonal rooms, or rooms that are canted from the standard alignment, or rooms with weird shapes in general. I don't know if the set was unpopular due to low demand for the diagonal walls, or if it was too expensive, or if it had too few specialty pieces and too many standard pieces (if it is possible to have too many standard pieces).
So how do people feel about a "new" Octagonal Room Set that is, perhaps, a bit more directed? A new version might contain:
8 Diagonal Corners
8 Diagonal 1/2Floors
6 Straight Walls
4 Floor Tiles
2 Doors
y bowtie connectors
That's enough to create two octagonal rooms each one 6 squares (30 feet) across, or one octagonal room 12 squares (60 feet) across (although we'd come up 14 floor tiles short). If the set is too large and/or pricey, just cut the numbers in half.
Alternatively, Diagonal Corners (and the Diagonal HalfFloors that go with them) could be included in a future Wicked Additions or Advanced Builder set.
Thoughts? Better info? Counterarguments?

That sounds like a very useful set. I like it!

I'd like to see a return of the set that was nothing but diagonal walls. I missed out on that one, and have very few diagonal pieces. Maybe they could make a smaller version of that set with the additional floor pieces.

I was fortunate to get the diagonal walls set. I use it in nearly every build I create. I would like to put my vote in for more of them as either a diagonal wall set or the useful octagonal room set jackattack mentioned.

Yes definately need some way to buy diagonal walls without getting the whole fanasty starter set. Both the idea of a diagonal walls and floors set and an octagonal room like jack suggests are good and I would buy either of them if they became available.
As well as for octagonal rooms, sometimes you just need a room or two or even a corridoor that sit at an angle to the rest of the rooms in the dungeon, for which the diagonal walls are perfect.

Perhaps DF could just restock the (set of 4) diagonal pieces? I believe they still have the other, diagonal floor pieces in stock.
Would this not accomplish essentially the same thing without DF adding yet another complete set into their (rapidly growing) range of inventory items?
I only suggest this as there appears to be a HUGE demand for new sets of all types and product lines.
That being said, I must admit it does sound like a nice set.

A set of four diagonal pieces would be great.
I may be working from some false assumptions here. My impression is that small packs and individual pieces are actually more expensive (per piece) and less profitable because of packaging and shipping costs. Because several items on the Individual Pieces page of the main website are discounted, I also think that individual pieces are either poor sellers, or inventory that is being phased out.
I think the original set might have had too many standard pieces in proportion to the diagonals. (Two straight walls and two floor tiles per diagonal piece!) The 28piece version I suggested has 33% more diagonals than the original version, and has enough other pieces to actually create two small rooms all by itself I hope that appeals to customers who have only a few Fantasy sets and want to add more rooms, as well as to customers who have lots of Fantasy sets and want more architectural variants. I also mentioned bringing it down to a 14piece version, which is half the size of most "normal" DF sets my hope there is that it would be less expensive without falling into the realm of "not worthwhile because of packaging and shipping costs".
I also realize that, unlike other sets (whatever the size), this is kind of a onetrickpony. It only features a single (type of) specialty piece. That's why I suggested the possiblity of putting Diagonal Corners in a future Advanced Builder or Wicked Additions.
Am I mistaken about the costs of small packs? Is there a high demand for individual pieces, and is DF willing to stock and market pieces by themselves? If I know more, maybe I can post better suggestions.

Oh, how about a Diagonal Door to round out the set?

I'd like to see a return of the set that was nothing but diagonal walls. I missed out on that one, and have very few diagonal pieces. Maybe they could make a smaller version of that set with the additional floor pieces.
I've got the Octagonal Room Set, and a set of individual extra diagonal walls (for ten altogether I think?), and I've got a set of diagonal floor pieces (eight?) on order, which will hopefully arrive with my MBS set. Ten is nothing like enough diagonal pieces are really useful. I've used them for all sorts of things including narrow sort of diagonal 'corridors' linking rooms (though with only ten pieces, they have to be short).
I'd really like a set with nothing but diagonal walls and diagonal floor pieces say something like a dozen of each. Or possibly a new Octagonal room set, as Jackattack suggests.

Medieval Buildings Set, Caverns x2, Cavernous Passages, Room and Passage, Deluxe Room, Octagonal Room, Narrow Passages, Advanced Builder, Wicked Additions I, Wicked Additions II, Traps I, Traps II, lots of individual pieces. I want Cavernous Rivers, and Cavernous Lakes, and Cavernous Ledges. Can you tell that I like caverns?
