This is kind of a semi-formed thought, but the Medieval Building Set cries out for a compatible set to make modular streets. (In some of the photos DF took, we can see the streets they've improvised.) Please note that I'm suggesting this as something for five years down the road, not three weeks from today. There are a couple-few ways to do this.

The first is to have cobblestone sidewalk and dirt street on the same tile. I like the idea of keeping these tiles at the 2"x2" size, as it would allow use to make narrow lanes (a mere 4" wide) or wide thoroufares, and doesn't require us to use even numbers of MBS tiles to accomodate 4"x4" street tiles. Tiles might have the following configurations:
all cobblestone -- for setting up a town square, or very wide medians, or really wide sidewalks
three cobblestone squares, one dirt square -- "inside" corners
half cobblestone, half dirt -- straight street/sidewalk piece
one cobblestone square, three dirt squares -- standard "outside" corner
all dirt -- for creating wide streets, or large earthen areas

The second way (and I kind of like this one better) is to devote an entire 2"x2" tile to the same surface -- one tile would be all cobblestone, and one tile would be all dirt. It will make most streets wider than they might be with the first configuration, but it requires fewer masters to be designed overall. It also allows future expansion with almost zero adaptation to existing pieces, since they just sit next to each other -- expansions might include paved street surfaces, decorative courtyard tiles, grass, whatever.

The problem with both of these approaches is that it requires a large number of flat pieces that have no other use. A third option harkens back to my Abyssal Edges post. Create a set of cobblestone sidewalk tiles (cobblestones set inside stone blocks?) whose finished EDGES define the end of DF pieces, and put a combat mat or flocked fabric down for the road surface. Builders would only need enough tiles to border each building, not to fill the areas between buildings. This one is simple enough that it might only need one master (or two or three very similar incarnations, for variety), so might come earlier than the fifteenth anniversary.

Or do we need anything between buildings at all? (Besides a doorstep and a few other street-oriented accessories.)

Not bad, but I am not that excited by it -- because it isn't necessary.

As you pointed out at the end of your post, why have anything between buildings at all?

Here's a way to get maximum versatility and maximum ease-of-use -- you get some Plasticard cobblestone/etc. sheets, or you come up with a design yourself by using a pencil to indent where appropriate on a huge sheet of foamcore. Then you spray it with some primer and drybrush to highlight the stones.

Now you've got a massive sheet of cobblestone/whatever. You place your MBS buildings however you like, and the space between them -- presto! -- instant cobblestone street.

That is far more flexible and quick to put together than having to assemble actual buildings.

Not to mention that there are lots of places that make flexible roadways, esp. for Christmas displays and things like that. It just isn't that hard to deal with this issue.

And, look at the problems some people are having with cavernous lakes -- the bigger the lake, the more cavern pieces you need, and in general getting the exact precise combo down is a little tricky (unless you err on the side of caution and simply have a billion pieces of each). Similar problems could arise here - your street pieces might not match up with your MBS pieces, and you'll have streets that have too large gaps between them and buildings, or buildings with no streets, etc.

Plus, streets for me rate right up there with passages -- useful for getting from point a to point b, but not all that fun or splashy for games or displays. Not quite the flair of the "wizard's study" or "guild hall" or "tavern" or for that matter "sacrificial chamber" or "bug pit."

So -- maybe, if Stefan did something really great with it, but I'm not thrilled by the idea.

What I WOULD love to see would be a Streets Accessory Set, similar to the medieval furniture set. Signs, gaslights, maybe even a gallows -- things to put IN the streets, furnishings specifically designed to be outdoors. THAT would be neat....

Nice idea but I do not think you really need anything.

For streets or any other ground terrain I just go to one of those cheap fabric stores (i.e. $1/yard stuff). I have fabric in different patterns incuding cobblestone, wheat field, a light brown with green sprays that look like grass, and so on.

My last purchase was a 4x8 foot piece of dark grey cloth with light streaks of grey in it. This is the "rock" that surrounds my DF pieces.

I've seen various sheets of the cobblestones and roadways that are produced (in sheets) by other companies.
In fact some of these sound quite substantial (some being made of latex, plastic or vinyl).

I also like the idea of city streets and that's where I'll be getting mine when the time (the MBSs) arrive.

If you're not already aware of these and would like more details, I'll can easily search them up again and post some sources for you.

I think I can find those in the dollhouse aisle of my local "Total Crafts" warehouse hobby store.

But by all means, post any links or company names you have. If information is power, I want all of us to be mighty indeed.

The preferred items I know of are the latex 11" x 17" sheets of road pattern from MBA.

I didn't find both types on their website, but I did find both the cobblestone and brick road patterns at:

FYI -

Almost all of you know how I constantly knock GW for their prices and attitude, BUT:

They have their new CityWar mat available, designed for their Imperium demolished buildings, etc.; it has city streets etc., and at first glance (Joe had it at Shore Leave this year) it looked GOOD! I do NOT know the price, but it might be worth investigating for anyone who is interested.

See ya!

Hi All -

Yes, GW has their city map which was a 4'x6' poster for $15. I think it was for a limited time only, though.

Here's a thought ... Dept 56 ... you know, the Christmas village people. I have several of their vinyl cobblestone mats that are 22" x 22" and they work great - just lay 'em down and set your buildings on them. I also have some of the 3" x 30" "strips" - some to even cut up and base miniatures with.

They also have a red brick pattern and a fancier victorian-type stone fan pattern.

I'll try to post some pics of the mats in the next day or two.
