I like surprises, but... my question was: "shouldn't be us, the loyal forum posters, unconditional buyers, the first knowing the secret?" why Dungeon magazine readers...?

Because Jeff didn't know that subscribers would be getting their copies mailed to them in advance of the magazine being put on newsstand shelves.

The ad staff at Dungeon told him the date that book shops would be selling it, which is AFTER the unveiling at GenCon -- they didn't tell him that subscribers would get copies in the mail a week before then.

Bad Dungeon! No cookie!

I don't feel betrayed. Don't feel like I missed out to the early receivers of the 'zine. I still feel closer to the heart and soul of the great folks of Dwarven Forge than most of the dweebs on that Paizo thread, philip being the exception.

I don't mind waiting till Jeff gets better photos to find out what the mystery set is. Chances are I'll probably buy one or two anyway so in the meantime, I just wait patiently. ;-}~

I wouldn't say I MINDED, per se -- just that I wasn't going to wait if I didn't have to.

If DF wanted to keep the info secret, that's fine with me. But if I could get it anyway, that's fine with me too. ;)

After all, in the end it's just a little fun. I can't wait for Tuesday to order mine and see more pics! (well, ANY -- I haven't seen pics yet)

Very happy to see at last DF being anounced... great news!!! I expect to someday see it in every-single-gamers-web.

If I were Jeff -- and if the "secret" status of the set was mentioned at all -- then I might review the paperwork he signed, or ask about the possiblility of a future discount, but Dungeon Magazine is THE medium to reach their target market. Dungeon is specifically published for GMs who run fantasy (d20) games, and DF cannot afford to alienate them.

Even when they are so clearly in the wrong.

To tell you the truth, I would be EXTREMELY surprised if the contract didn't include some kind of disclaimer about the release date of the issue.

"Release date subject to change" seems like common practice to me. I can't imagine Paizo would put themselves in a position where a change, moving the date up or down, could get them in legal trouble.

It's a shame there was this little hiccup, but in the end, at least the wait is almost over anyway! I cannot WAIT to see the pics of this set -- I'll grab the mag anywhere I can find it tomorrow, if I CAN find it, but I get the feeling that the pics posted in the newsletter are gonna be FAR more impressive...

It is common practice for subscribers to receive their magazines a week or 2 before they arrive at games shops and newsagents. I'm surprised that every seems to think that Dungeon Magazine is to blame!

Actually, I think I'm one of the few who has "blamed" Dungeon. I haven't had a magazine subscription since I was a teenager, so I wasn't aware that subscribers had such a huge lead time.

It is common practice for subscribers to receive their magazines a week or 2 before they arrive at games shops and newsagents.
The lead that Dungeon subscribers have is not all that early.
Some periodical subscribers, especially those periodicals that are quarterly or less often like MHQ, may receive their issue as much as five weeks before the news-stands do.
This factor has been built into periodical circulation and is the main bait to acquire subscriptions for over a century now.

I'm surprised that every seems to think that Dungeon Magazine is to blame!
So otherworld, everyone here has been blaming Dungeon for the mix up?
Might I have you point out to us otherworld where I blamed Dungeon?
I have been part of this thread prior to your posting quoted here.

This will be quite entertaining for all of us to see otherworld because I did NOTHING of any sort that you are accusing me of along with everyone else here.

Next time otherworld, when you feel like whipping out your blame brush again, you might do a whole lot more reading and digesting first and then be a great deal more judicious, maybe even humble, in your accusations, eh?

No one is to blame except me. I misunderstood a term and that led to a mistake. I thought the "Gen Con" issue was the one released very close to Gen Con. The crew at Dungeon just did what I told them to do.

My bad.

BTW, Tuesday is almost here!
