Please forgive if this is a repeat subject.

Whilest working on a large cavern layout with four stories, I discovered I did not have a suitable way to bring characters from one level to another using DF pieces.
I like the double-wide staircase idea I've seen IO and Tom use.
I wanted something more natural however, since this is supposed to be a cavern.
I decided to utilize the spiral staircase. Looked great, except that I'd have to imagine the staircase spiraled into the cavern (back behind my styrophome (sp) barrier). I didn't like that idea. So, I decided to use an outcroppring and two spiral staircases, one going each direction (to make kind of an S with two spiral staircases). That looked great in my head. When I laid the pieces down, however, I discovered that the spiral staircases only go UP in ONE direction. There aren't both Left and Right staircases. So, with the pieces laid out, characters would walk down one spiral staircase only to walk UP another! Doh!

What I'm trying to say is that I'd like to see both "left" and "right" spiral staircases so that we could create more elaborate setups. I know, it isn't likely to happen, but it's a thought.

I KNOW people have said they'd like a cavernous staircase, so I probably won't say much about it. I'm not sure I'd find a spiral cavernous stair as useful as a straight or slightly curved one, however any would be appreciated.

Not sure if any of this made sense. I'm very tired. Time to hit the sack. JKW

62 sets and counting. In addition, a boatload of individual pieces or sets of pieces.

Spiral stairs typically twist in only the one direction, because more people are right-handed than left-handed. Architects designed the staircases on the assumption that if soldiers were fighting on the stairs, the defenders would be facing down and the attackers would be trying to get up the stairs. So the person who is higher on the stairs has room to swing a weapon, while the person who is lower on the stairs is obstructed by the central column.

But yes, spiral stairs that twist in the other direction would be a very welcome addition to the FANTASY line.

Upper and Lower Curved Stairs (something to stand free, or against a Curved Wall) would also be nice, as would a double-wide Upper Stairs piece.

I noticed the non-stackability of the DF spiral stairs when I first got mine -- stacking them was one of my first big plans, and it kinda fell apart rather quickly.

I definitely would love to see some cavernous stairs, though -- esp. now that multi-level caverns are so easy to do! I'd love to see one of two approaches (or both, of course)

1. Freestanding stairs, like the two-piece in the fantasy set. They could be placed anywhere as needed, and they'd be essentially a large rock formation with stepped layers that ascend from "floor" level to the top of a wall.

2. A kind of combination of a straight wall piece and the funky corner piece from the cavern set. That corner, you may notice, does have some "stairs" of a sort -- only they don't go anywhere, and trying to use that piece as a connector to a higher level doesn't really work. So I'd like that kind of design incorporated into a regular wall piece that could be placed so that you get natural stairs leading up one level.

I'd LOVE to see this stuff. .. .

Yes, not sure if this is true for modern stairs but certainly can be true for medieval style castles/towers/etc. However for an underground complex it would surely depend on which way attackers were expected to come from. For a traditional real world dungeon defenders would probably choose to defend the towers above over the dungeon, so stairs may be traditional as the only threat is prisioner breakout so once again defending from the higher ground.

However underground dwellers who build their own stairs (Dwarves, gnomes, drow, etc) may very well choose to build the spiral reverse to defend from threats from above.

All subterranean humanoids are lefties, waza. Everybody knows that. ;)

Okay, here's a thought for the grand staircase folks...

Lower Grand Stairs. These stairs describe a quarter-circle, but the sharp corner has been cut off to create a 2" edge. The top step would be a semi-circle that buts up against a landing.

The landing can be formed by standard Pedestal pieces, and standard Upper Stairs finish the rise to the next level. Add a special triangular pedestal to match the cut-off corner, and you can tuck the Lower Grand Stairs into a corner. (A door can be tucked into that corner, on top of the triangular landing, so that the stairs don't just end at a blank wall.)

I'm not sure if this is a complete idea, but I think it is the beginning of a semi-decent idea. I'd love some input.

[sigh]

Just because all subterranean humanoids are lefties, it doesn't mean that all lefties are subterranean humanoids.
That would be like saying that if all healthy dogs have wet noses, and I have a wet nose, then I am a healthy dog.

However, looking at YC's signature, one really has to wonder...

Do not attempt to mollify me with your logical syllogisms. As an alternately-handed American, I am still offended to the core! Pistols at dawn!

Besides, it's a proven fact that that subterranean humanoids lean to the far right.
