TOPIC: Needs for the Den of Evil additions

Needs for the Den of Evil additions 8 Years, 4 Months ago
I tried to actually use the Den of Evil for one of my games for the first time this weekend. First of all, it was very nice and my players enjoyed it. However, even though I own three sets, I immediately realized it was impossible for me to build even relatively small dungeon as per the module I was running. I managed to improvise and came up with a nice, but smaller build with more corridors than originally planned. But in the process, I realized these sets have much more in the way of corridors than I usually need, and much less in the way of room pieces than I needed. In particular, I was short on floor pieces, followed closely by being short on straight wall pieces. Also, in trying to use the corridors, I found I often had no way to "seal off" some corridor ends. So what I most would like to see in terms of supplement for the room and passage sets is a Den of Evil Room Set, or at least a Wicked Addition set that includes 4"x6" floors and 4" or 6" straight wall pieces. Also, stairs of some sort are really needed, and a dead end corridor piece would be useful. A grand looking double door and a grand staircase would also come in handy.

Yes, I'd be interested to hear if there will be a DOE Room Set as well.

Just for the record, I would gladly buy into the DOE series - (including the WA set) if I could just build a large room (or two) with DOE, so I could add it to the end of a complex/dungeon for a final encounter area.

Although the DOE R&P set is very impressive in itself, I personally have little use for an extra, entirely new set of passages.

Is anyone else in a similar situation?

Yeah. I stopped buying the DoE R&P set after 2 because of the ratio of passage to room pieces. I figured I'd wait and see if DF comes out with a DoE Room Set. Currently, that's the only way I'm buying more DoE. Of course, if I becomea millionaire somehow, I'd buy whatever I wanted, regardless of the cost...it's just that on my salary, I would rather buy a set of what I need rather than a larger set that contains only a smaller portion of what I currently need.

I'm sure DF hasn't given up on DoE, so perhaps we'll see a Room set or something like that in the future.

I found my own temporary way around that problem.

Oh, THANKS, Blackhawk; tease us with a comment like that and then go away.

WELL; what's your temporary way 'round the problem?

Damn, I HATE it when he does that. Even though I know he WILL be back, it just drives me nuts when he leaves us hanging for an answer!

Hmmm.. . . .

IMO, the DOE Wicked Additions Set needs to include the following:

1. Doors (as in swinging) for areas that the sliding type doors won't do.
2. Wall sections with torch sconces, a la the Deluxe Room Set.
3. Secret doors
4. Rotating walls
5. Round wall sections
6. Evil throne section (for the BBEG)
7. Arrow loop sections to set up crossfire zones (make good use of those evil minons)
8. Pool of blood (could also double as a dimensional portal
9. Sacrificial altar
10. Mystical pentagram or other magical-looking pattern on the floor (a la the Floor Set)

I scanned in a DoE floor piece, photoshopped it into a 4x4, 4x6 and 6x6 area, and printed them on 110 lb cardstock from my laser printer.

If needed for smaller floor pieces, triangular, etc just cut apart.

A touch of blue-tac and I have a bigger DoE floor.

It works in a pinch for now- until a DoE room set or some such is released.

I didnt bother with walls.

Before

After (the flash washed it out but the color match is much better then shown)

Hmmm... I agree with most except 6, 8, 9 and 10. 6, 8 and 9 is terrain and many, many companies make evil thrones, altars, and generic "pools" that can be painted red. Since the floors set has a pentagram I do not see the need to make another just to get the floor edging to look like DoE.

I'd rather see the effort be put into things no other company out there produces (including DF). As stated earlier I'd really like to see more room pieces (big floors, round walls, DoE stairs, or some such),

I'm STILL holding out for a DoE Grand Staircase, even though it would be better as a separate accessory; after all, how many Grand Staircases do you need, versus the other pieces that would be in a DoE additions set?
Beyond that, I'd say follow Kradlo's list, possibly with BlackHawk1's modifications.

Forge on, guys! See ya!

I would think the biggest "need" for the for the DoE Wicked Additions is that the pieces fit with DoE but also equally fit with other sets for those without DoE.

If this set is only useful for those who bought DoE then it is going to be a very limited edition, probably in much more limited numbers that even is required simply because DF can affoord to be stuck with stock they can't move.

I would therefore suggest that it would have things like an evil staircase that matches the look of DoE but would equally fit as a "staircase to hell" in a dungeon or a cavern.

The problem of rooms/corridors ratio is exactly the reason why I didn't buy any. If there are any DoE sets left after DF releases some more room I will buy some. I envisage DoE as a smaller area within a larger dungeon and for that reason, rooms are going to be more useful to me than corridors.

I know that the decision to "break the moulds" has already been taken, but this is another reason why I am not buying any at the moment - it will just be too frustrating for me in the future if I decide to try to build a particular size/layout of dungeon but can't because I am short a few pieces and there is no more DF kit available to order. I would love to buy a couple of DoE sets IF I could also buy a couple of DoE Room sets and the DoE Wicked Additions set at the same time. Unfortunately, I suspect that all the DoE sets will be gone, if these sets ever become available.

I am in way dissing the quality of the DoE set - it is excellent. It is just an availability/flexibility issue for me.
