A lot the above reasons for why the transperinces look like a problem presented by others are the same ones i was tinking would make it better to try as a seperate bit, or do as L suggestes just use a bit of card stock and print it out and put over. From the very small research i have done Lava doesn't look that see through. I don't think wee need to be able to see into ther piece. Now if we could get a cool lighting effect from underneath that would be a different story then you woudl want it transperent to let the light of the lave shine out (like in this set up members.shaw.ca/lavaterrain/) is the only reason i can think of for having it be transparent.

Jackattack is right, printing twice can give some good results, i have used it a few times for the WWG stuff, it helped some times to make the image more distinct.

My plan if i can get the time this weekend is to make a HA version of the river bed with some floor tiles along the edges, to act as the river bank, and then have a spot that would be in first stage open in the middle.
After that base peice is done i plan to Dig out some of the basing material (to make a deeper channel in the piece (and deppending on ththe way things look may stop there...), then make up a pretty thick sluury of Plaster, and slightly incline the new lava river piece and pour it,, or just pour it in then incline, which ever seemes to work better, then let gravity do it's job letting it flow a bit down the tile and harden, hopefully giving a flowing effect, i have a few ideas for how to rough up the top to make it look like the pictures of the lava flows i have examained on line and then see what i looks like.

See if you can get some 'Lightsheet' material. Fit it in a shallow trench between the foamcore base I know you're going to put under the HA, THEN put your lava-printed transparency on it, then your HA rocks/stones.
Connect a battery pack to the lightsheet and watch your lava 'glow' from the heat!

Thanks; put your donations in the basket as you leave the auditorium.
Next group of worshippers, please file into the Shrine of the Insane GM and take you seats; there will be a short recess while the Mad Yank counts the donations from the previous group.

Well; I can dream, can't I?

See ya!

I was what is this Lightsheet you speek of... and went searching there is a company that makes them only about 50 minutes away... this is the type of stuff one of the players wants to do, light up the DF.... i may have to check into it, but one of the things that always scares me on websites is they don't list prices anywhere, i generally find out it's more than i want to pay ;)

If you are printing on opaque paper, why not print on FLUORESCENT opaque paper? (Or paint on transparency with fluorescent paint.) Then direct a "blacklight" (UV) bulb on your setup to see it glow. Maybe not as good as Lightsheet, but almost certainly cheaper.

(My Star Wars GM used to print spaceships on fluorescent paper for big battles, and used a fluorescent light in the overhead fixture. Lots of fun, but difficult to read dice in the dark...)

jackattack is right about the fluorescent paper and paints - and it will almost CERTAINLY be cheaper than Lightsheet! However, I e-mailed either the manufacturer or a distributor a few years ago and got a sample sheet FREE! You can't beat free, but unless they're giving it away, the paper or paint WILL be cheaper.

But it CAN be re-used, if you do it right. And it WILL look COOL!

Your dime, your decision.

See ya!

You do realize that there is no reason one cannot have ice and lave with one set?

I was looking at how the clear resin in the Cav-Riv set can "lock" into the submerged structure. There is no reason why a base "dry" set could not be made with red and blue/white sparkly resin pieces that fit into the base pieces. DF could even make blue/green resin pieces to provide more in the way of water pieces.

One could then have up to 4 ways to use a set such as this- "dry", lava, ice, water- god known what else.

For that matter, creating an "ice cavern" might be as easy as changing or adding to the painting process after casting. A few passes with an airbrush to "frost" existing cavern pieces would be simplicity itself, AND economies of scale might actually make the "extra" cavern pieces cheaper to produce.

Well i have made my two different lava flow effects and there is one i think works much better, just wish the paint jobs were better, if i get out of work early enough might hit a store on the way home to get some paint to re-paint them.

The test paints i did, i didn't like the look of, it was only after doing some more surfing and getting a wider selection of real life lava pictures as references that i figured out why.

Had all of the colors, even in the right proportions, but in the end it looked off, and i think i figured out why so want to repaint them. I don't know if i will get it repainted in time before i want to use it in game tommorrow or not, or even the ones i was working on over the weekend painted in the first place.
