Can Dwarven Forge swear that this wonderful product is not made in sweat shops? I notice that every piece says made in China, and I couldn't bare it if this came from a sweat shop.

I Know I Have Asked My Self that Question on More than One Occasion, And Sigh... I Have to Admit That I Have Not Asked it of DF... It is a Difficult Subject to Ponder, Especially since I LOVE the Existing Lines and Am SOOO Looking Forward to Future Releases... There Is NOTHING on the Market that Compares to DF and I Suppose there is a Part of Me that Asks rather that would Have to Change Should I Pursue that Line of Thinking... Does this Make Me an Apathetic Monster? I Do Not Really Know... I Do Know that The Folks at DF From all of the Exchanged E-Mails over the Past Couple of Years have Expressed their Love of Gameing and Their Open Communicative Nature, Perhaps They will Answer this Question themselves with Minimal Prompting...

Now that Having Been Said... How Many Of Us ONLY Buy Things Game Related or Other, which We KNOW are Guilt Free? We Live In a Society that Preaches to us that we are Somehow supposed to be Super Noble, Highly Educated, (Or at Least Resonably Well Read), Socially Concious and Politically Correct at Every Possible Juncture, While at the Same Time Confusing us with A Market Flooded with Items from essentially Unkown origins (Many "American" made Products Use Parts made outside of the U.S. Even Harley Davidson Motorcylces of all things, if Memory Serves), and why is that? Because it IS Cheaper to Manufacture many Labor intensive Items in a Market which can Supply more Cost Effective Labor... And Why is that? I am Affraid to Say that it is Because it is Unlikely that any of Us Would be Willing to Pay $300.00 (Just A Low Estimate), for a Traps Set Painted by Hand in the U.S. Let us be Honest here for a Minute and Admit that Artists are Likely the Most Difficult Group of People to Try to Get Consistant Productivity out of (On a Mass Scale that is), Because they are Artists, they are Talented, Creative Minds Who Generally Require a lot of Freedom and Flexibility in their Work environment, otherwise they Get Bored Needing to Be Challanged by the Next "Creative" Objective Right? So how would it be Accomplished? Lower Standards? (Hire Unskilled Labor, and Hope to Train them to Produce Consistant Work which is Also Creative, but Settle if it's not Possible?) Or Higher Overall Price? (Many of us make a Little more Ca$h then we Did In The 70's When many of Us Old Farts Started Gameing in the First Place, but Are we Making Enough to Drop $300.00 + on the Next M.M. Set? I Could Not). The Simple Fact is A Small Game Company Would have to Cut Corners or be So Specialized as to Practically limit Production to Speacial Orders... Now I was a Child of the 70's, raised by Granola Eating, Crystal Guru Worshiping Freaks from the Sixties, and I have Generally been Just Left of Center Politically... But I have Also Literally "Dreamed" of Toys as Kewl as the DF stuff for Years and so it is Difficult to ask a Question Like "Does DF use Slave Labor"? I Can Only Hope that the Answer Is NO, (The Idea of a Bunch of 10 Year Olds Painting my Orcs in Some Dimly Lit, Poorly Ventilated Warehouse somewhere in China is more than a Little Upsetting)... But Then Those Same Factories may have Built my DVD Player, Manufatured the DVD's, Video Games, or For that Manor the "Athletic" Shoes which are Scattered throughout my Home... What about the Rugs? My Toaster Oven... The Stereo, or Even the Electical System In My Car? Does G.E. make Every Componant for Every Light Bulb in the U.S.? I Don't Know but I Doubt it..

Ok... Ok... I Really am more Fun than this (And Usually Come off More Liberal and Less Preachey...<Grin>...), And Having probably Incited the Ire of Everyone from "Real" Economists with a "Real" Grasp of the Subject, to The Leftist Socialists (Many Of Whom think Gaming is a Purile Waste of Time and Energy anyway), to the Many Faceted Artisans of The World, (Not to Mention The Crystal Gurus'), I Remain Both Opinionated and Essentialy Unaopolgetic of my General Sense of Confusion and refusal to Stop Posting my Gripes on Boards like this and Just Go See a Counselor...<Chuckle>...

Simply Put I Love The DF Stuff and am Not Quite Willing to Stop Using their Products out of Fear that they may be the Only Company I Support Financially (Knowingly or Not), which Takes Advantage of Inexpensive or Less Expensive Labor... Geesh, I Am A Long Term Government Worker (And Self Proclaimed Artist of Sorts), and I am Thouroughly Exploited by My Place of Employment Daily... Most of Us Are... But I Love To Game... So I Will Not Ask the Question of DF Myself... Though I Will Likely Check back to See if Any Info is "Volunteered"...

What I want to know is, what do those Chinese workers think about the pieces they're making?

"Hey, Chen... exactly what are these things for anyway? Are they toys?"

"Uh, I think Zhou said they had something to do with dragons."

"Oh, you mean they're good luck pieces, maybe?"

"Who knows, Wang. Americans are crazy people. At least they pay well."

There are a lot of factories in Mainland China that produce resin products. Many of the workers in those factories are country bumpkins and the salary they earn helps them support their families in the hinderlands. I wouldn't necessarily assume that a factory in Mainland China is automatically a sweatshop. Working hours are long and harsh but the people are making money....making money for a better life. (Wow, me sticking up for China, I never would have believed it  )

I was a student in Beijing 17 years ago and then MC was poor, very poor. I went back for a visit a few years ago and I was shocked. Kids running around in brand new Nikes and carrying cell phones.

Check around you and see how many things you buy or use everyday are from China. You will be surprised.

Buy from DF with a good conscience, the chances are you are improving the lives of the people who make our toys.

I think there is a problem with the original question, since first you have to define "sweat shop."

Do the people making DF products earn less than their US counterparts? Almost certainly. Is this a reasonable wage for their location? Probably.
If the average wage in an area is $1 an hour, then paying people $1 an hour is reasonable, especially if the alternative for the employees is no work at all.

When I think "sweat shop" I think FORCED labor. If people are forced to work for a pittance, or nothing, then that is criminal. If people voluntarily work for low wages for unskilled or semi-skilled labor, than that is just market economics at work.

MrMorden paints all our minis and we don't pay him anything. In fact we complain and bitch. If he didn't own so many weapons, we would in fact, probably try to lock him up in his painting room for a week or two.

P.S. Is my tavern done yet? :D

I think it sad that you guys are belittling my question.

I just want to know if the people that work on my favorite gaming product get a fair wage under fair working conditions. Dwarven Forge? Anyone in the know?

DaggerDaleGM,

I Certainly did not Intend for my Comments to Belittle or Undermine the Seriousness of Your Question... If Anything I Was Agreeing with your Concern, while Exploring my own Complicity in the Hypocrisy of a Culture Geared for Reckless Consumption, While Claiming Moral Superiority...

Thor,

I am Certain the Question Really IS: "Whoever Has the Most Toys when they Die Wins!"...<Chortle>... You Know What Would Be Awesome though, would be Getting A Whole Bunch of People together that Had Lots O' DF Gear and Having an Expo of Sorts? You Know People Could Show off their Mods, Have Bragging Rights to Extensive Collections, Do Some Gnarley Game Sessions and of Course (For those of us of an Age), Gather at the Pub for A Bitter while Discussing the Fun of Collecting the Stuff... You Know Kind of Like a Sad Reflection of a Car Show Come Game Convention...<Grin>...

Thanks Voidian Lord

I am a political activist and even a delegate. I take lots of things seriously but I also play hard and so want to know that I can buy more MM, lots and lots of it in good conscience.

As for a DF gathering that sounds really fun. Esp. with the beer part. :)

I think a Forge-Con would work great. (There was wild talk under the Thread DF Comunity with the Admin about this)

DF is in Ill. right? You can't get more central then that. They should throw somthing like this. We Southern boys would go.

I think DF is trying to see how many of us nuts are really out there. :D

We could make a really big set-up. (DF could use it some how? Maybe make a video to folks thinking about using DF stuff in there games?)

I'll go start a Forge-Con Thread, so the Chinese politics debate can continue with out bothering the very sensitve THOR :D

The beer part would be my best event.
