Grendel makes a really nice resin figure that would work perfectly for the Watcher in the Well from LotR. It's F0070, Swamp Creature. I've normally gotten my Grendel resins from Discount Hobby (www.discounthobby.com), but his website currently shows Grendel as out of stock, waiting for restock.

Smaller tentacles can be found at Magnificent Egos, which may be available at your FLGS. If not, try www.magificentegos.com and order directly through them. Or, check out Neil at The WarStore (www.thewarstore.com). I heartily recommend the WarStore, as Neil has never let me down.

Well, I have to say that I've been (as said in the other thread) mad about getting some water creatures, but, as jackattack wisely said, only the part of them that is out the water. Tentacles, the water serpent, shark like and alligator like critters (but only the parts above the water). It's so my need of them that I thought in writing wizards of the coast to see if they dare to do such figures. I didn't.

So I can say that I'm into this thing com-ple-te-ly dude!!!!

Only one whining... I don't want them to be part of the floor piece. Oh yeah it would be rockin' cool, but I need to be able to use them, for example, emerging from a small pit from the floor, as well as from water.

My two cents!

there is a monster from reaper wich is made of 3 pieces (when finished)-a big head with a wide open jaw and two claws - so you can place them on the floor and it loooks like it just came out of the ground. its meant to be some kind of earth monster but i am shure with a different colouring its perfect for the lake.

besides the plastic animals seem to be perfect -i bought a bunch after seeing the fist river pictures - they are cheap and easy to cut in half so they wont walk on the water.....

Well, a few things:

1. the Reaper fig of the burrowing monster is FANTASTIC, and I posted some pics of it in the well piece awhile back (under the Cool Photos section, in a thread called "I've got a squatter") but the hack may have removed them....

2. In general, the reason I would want tentacles on water floor pieces rather than "free standing" is the same reason I cited for not being crazy about the idea of cutting ANYTHING off and placing it on top of water elements -- the water will be clear enough that it won't work. Especially since some things will be clearly UNDER the surface, and some things clearly poking through it (like stalagmites), it won't quite work, for me at least, to have things resting on top of water you can clearly see through and ruin the illusion that these things "keep going" as it were.

I mean, if I HAVE to, fine. But if I'm asking for pieces in an extension set, I'm asking for something that DOES go under the water, with ripples etc. THAT would be wicked . . .

Yes, you are talking about this beauty that L posted long time ago... in fact this was the first thing that made me realize the need for such things like this.

A note about what jkratzer has said in the "cool photos" forum, is that I agree about what he has said: dwarven forge expanding the line of products to figures: I don't thing that right now it's a good idea, but... well, I, actually think that this things could come from DF and not from another minis company, because they are not really miniatures, but some kind of "living accesories". It's very rare to see figures that are so scenery dependant like the critters that we are proposing here.

Here's the beauty... oh, I can't post the pic here... well, if somebody wants to see it tell me so I post it in a cool photos thread. (Anyway L is in the right to make the honors too)

Hmm. .. I just scanned through old posts and saw that my pic of that squatter is, indeed, gone. I'll see if I can find it to repost..

LATER: Found the pics, reposted them in Cool Photos....

Wereweasel wrote (and I moved around some sentences):

"There is a Sea Serpent miniature that shows only the "above water" portions of the creature. It is a metal mini though and is unpainted. It is presently listed on E-bay (and is usually re-listed every other week) and shows up when searched as "SeaMonster" (all as one word). The same seller also has a nice Giant Squid mini for sale.

"The ebay sellers ID is: sbgames999

"I hope this is what your looking for."

It is indeed. The Ral Partha "Giant Sea Monster" and "Giant Squid" are out of production, but available on e-bay. Thanks, Wereweasel!

Bonus!

As your earlier description was quite good, I thought this might be the right one.

Thanks for letting me know about them being OOP. In time, I may even pick-up a spare of both for that reason.

Ral Partha also did some crocodiles and hippos, with versions that showed them on land, and in the water, with just the tops of their heads sticking up.

They are long out of production, but you might try eBay. I know that Iron Wind is doing the old Ral Partha minis, but I'm not sure if they're making those particular figures.

You can always take a hacksaw to a mini to make a swimming figure, of course.

Kestensia (sold unpainted) by Crunch Waffle. Not a monster by any means, but certainly water-themed.

I really like tha Magnificent Egos mini. I've been searching anything for use in aquatic adventures for some time now and that's one of the few (metal) minis that I haven't seen before. I'll be sure to find me some, (if at all possible).

That being said, here is some info that may be of help to anyone looking for aquatic minis. (Please note I am including underwater minis and not just surface minis as these cavernous lakes must lead somewhere:

First, the partially submerged minis (I believe) are part of a set called "River Denizens". As mentioned they are Ral Partha minis. (If I'm wrong about the complete name - please advise).

Secondly, Reaper has a Familiar Pack VII (#2948). It has (7) great underwater minis including a small octopus, an eel, a small shark, a ray and three different, (but all nasty-looking) fish.

Third, I have located some excellent aquatic minis (pewter/metal figurines) at the local dollar stores as well. Of these minis are included my (three) pairs of turtles, numerous giant frogs, many small and detailed reef and coral formations, multiple dolphins and good-sized sharks. Considering the price I paid ($1 Cdn) for each of these, you can imagine just how much I've managed to save.
(p.s.) I've also acquired small (young/baby) elephants and giraffes at the same place. They are perfect (IMHO) for use with the RP Animals of Africa series.

Finally I have located mini packs of both alligators and snakes that are now produced by Mega Minis. They are either in their "Swarms" or "Animals" line. I have all of the minis in the Animals line and many of the swarms as well. I highly recommend them to anyone, especially if you're looking for suitable livestock minis. From my experience these "Mega Minis" and the aforementioned Reaper Familiar pack are usually available at: www.nobleknight.com .

I hope this helps.
