This isn't really an idea for DF, as I think it is too specialized to have wide appeal, but I thought I'd put it here for all of the modders out there.

A wall of gears.

This could be a facade over an existing wall, or it could be a large "furniture item" in the middle of a room, or it could be a set of walls with straight, L, T, and crossing sections. The gears might be fine metal pieces, large cast iron, or even stone.

From a gaming standpoint, the gears might be the central workings of the various mechanical traps in a dungeon, or the secret behind the gnomes' moving walkways, or the mechanism of a huge portcullis and drawbridge, or even part of the fabled "doomsday clock" that marks the time left before the end of the world. Players might be able to disarm a coming trap by disabling the works, or interfering with the mechanism might have dire consequences. Clockworks on both sides of a passage would reduce it to a 5' width. Finally, in a large room with lots of gears, the DM might decide that anyone in a square next to gears must make a DEX save or be caught in or damaged by the clockworks.

Thoughts?

Two thoughts here, jack:

1.) You are and awesomely inventive GM, and have fantastic visions of how to really spice up a game of D&D, or any other fantasy gaming milieu.
2.) You are one seriously twisted dude, dude, and should not be let out in public without a keeper - and a short leash!

Both are vitally necessary requirements for a successful gamer; ROCK ON!

AND, I think I know JUST the clock to gut for the gear train; my late grandmother's Big Ben alarm clock. That damned thing has been ticking away for YEARS! It just refuses to run down; she overwound it but didn't manage to break the mainspring, and it's DRIVING ME NUTS!!!!
Now I know how Captain Hook felt about that damned alligator. Poor guy.

Man, where you keep getting all these great ideas? Do you have a 99-year-lease on left field?
WOW!

See ya!

WAIT!!

Before you gut your grandmother's clock, do a web-search or take it to Antiques Roadshow -- you might be able to sell it for ten times its weight in DF merchandise!

And thanks for the compliments. I'm still blushing.

Wow, this could really be neat looking. I'm sure you could pick up some clock bits from a hobby shop and mount them to a 6" wall section. Drill a small hole in the bottom of the wall near the floor and you could probably stick a small battery-powered (like those found in RC cars) motor through and have the gears actually turn on the wall.

When running an adventure in the abandoned gnome city of Jzadirune for the Shackled City Adventure Path, I used many of the Mage Knight traps set pieces to simulate gears and machines. It would have been nice to have a wall with gears too, though these Mage Knight pieces actually worked quiet well. The players really seemed to like Jzadirune's gears and clockwork, especially the player of the gnome rogue/wizard.

Thanks zoroaster100 for the info on the Mage Knight stuff.

I've been trying to figure out what to use for such a purpose (levers, gears and machines) for some time now.
