I don't think it's the paint colors so much as it is the technique used to get the look of DF pieces. Remember--the walls & floors are just very basics values of gray. For those of you who may be color theory challenged, here's a basic primer:

What we consider "white" and "black" are called "Values." Values are simply the absence or presence of light. White is a light value which represents the "lightest" value possible. Black is the darkest value which represents the absence of light. All of the grays between White and Black are just values of lightness.

So in theory, you could use a mere two "colors" of paint to achieve the same base (not basic) look and feel of DF pieces: White paint and black paint mixed to varying degrees (you could add a touch of raw umber to give the color a more yellowed look as some of the pieces seem to have).

What becomes important here is the technique you use to achive the "stone" look. I'd start with a medium-valued gray as the "primer" coat on a piece and then let it dry fully. Then I'd mix up a "wash" of pure black (a wash is where you literally use more drops of water to less drops of paint to make a watery "wash"). Use a large brush to wash the piece with your dark wash and then let it dry fully. The last step is the most important and will really determine the finished look of your painted piece: Drybrushing.

Using varying degrees of gray, use a short bristled brush and dip only the tip of the brush into the paint, and then use a sponge or cloth (wouldn't recommend paper towels or tissue paper) to wipe off the excess paint from the brush so only a bit is left on the brush. Then you basically "dry brush" the piece so that traces of gray are left on the piece. You'll start to see the details of your piece come alive as the higher pieces of the sculpture pop out from being "highlighted" essentially. The deeper parts of your piece will remain dark as the brush will more than likely skip over those parts. You can repeat successive coats of drybrushing, using a lighter mixture of gray each time to give really deep effects. Be mindful not to darker though--you'll just muddy up the paint job!

That's it in a nutshell. You can create some beautiful effects with a simple drybrush technique. Please keep in mind that the texture of the surface you're painting plays a large role in the outcome of the piece also. The more rocky a sculpt, the better it will look. The flatter the piece, the duller the finished job will look.

I'd like to see more themed-room sets, a la "Ogre's Den"... how about "Vampire's Tomb", "Mummy's Crypt", "Treasure Vault", "Wizard's Study", "Torture Chamber", "Armory"...possibilities are endless!

I have been saying it for Years, I Really Like the Idea of theamed rooms... Maybe even toss in a Single "Special" Miniature with certain Sets, like a Bartender for the Kewl Modular Tavern/Inn set that could be!

Next set I'd like: River Set with pieces you could use in any room or cavern set up.

A River Set in my mind would include the "flow" of the river, straight, turns, etc, river ends on wall pieces (perhaps with grates, iron bars leading to sewers or something in that style), perhaps a waterfall-wall section, and a waterfall/pit section.

Another future set could include stuff like large pool elements -comparable in style and adaptability to floor pieces- to build large bodies of water however we like.

I think I prefer a river set to a themed room. I never even got the Ogre's Den. Too limiting for me.

I'd like a sort of compromise -- a set with something like the following:

1 3x3 floor with wood plank floor
1 3x3 floor with (insert some other style) floor
2 3 square walls (a la the mermaid fountain) with bookshelves on the walls
1 3 square wall with fireplace
1 3 square wall with hanging tapestries
etc.

That way, instead of getting just one room (like the ogre den) you get a set that allows you to make 2 or 3 sorts of rooms, somewhat modular, but still faster and more detailed than just putting a bunch of regular pieces together. (Picture turning the Ogre's Den into a set of modular elements -- the wood floor with rug, the fireplace wall, the wall with the bed and kindling, etc)

It would have an added advantage (besides being 2 or 3 rooms instead of just one) -- you could make one of the "official" rooms with the set, or you could combine its elements with regular pieces to just get a "hint" of something, for variety. Just use the wood floor in a room, make it whatever you want. Just put the bookshelf wall in a room, etc.

Same thing for me.

Even though L's ideas are great ones, I'd still prefer the river set since I can get fireplaces and other "deco" from producers of minis, like Grendel.

I have looked at the Grendel stuff, but to me they are a bit pricey for not being prepainted. I have enough stuff to paint without painting them (looking around the house and seeing 4 rooms left to paint as well as miniature!)

I like L's idea for a special walls and floors set. That would really add to the flexibility and variety of using the DF stuff.
