The Fantasy Floors set has a few pieces I would like to see carried over to the Cavernous style.

Every cavern needs a good Floor Rift.

While a crypt or coffin would be somewhat out of place, how about a stone cairn? It might have a sword or shield on top.

A crude Summoning Cirlcle might be scratched into the floor of the cavern, with chalk runes.

And there might be Slave Pits with wooden covers.

In addition, there are several races that might set up quarters in an unfinished cavern, including kobolds, goblins, orcs, bugbears, trolls, and even stone-age humans. I'd love to see a few crude doors (and a Straight Cavernous Wall piece?) made for the cavernous sets. A crude door with mismatched planks, a portcullis or cage door made of crisscrossed bamboo, and a frame with hides stretched across it would all make good "improvised" doors for cavern dwellers.

What else would be a good addition to signify habitation in a cavern?

Interesting ideas! Doors would be tricky, since it's hard to get caverns to accommodate small spaces between walls due to the size of the pieces involved. And the rift chasm piece works well for the caverns anyway.

I love the idea of clumsy wooden planking in places, though, or bamboo. I'd love to see a Cavernous Accessories set in general. Here's what I'd want:

1. Big stalagmite columns. Feels really necessary, I love the idea of having huge stone formations in places throughout the caverns -- the smallish one we have now doesn't feel big enough. PLUS, I'd love to see them flat on top so we can use them to support a higher level -- then it would be both beautiful AND useful.

2. Jungle stuff! I've been peppering my caverns with Mystic Blocks accessories, but I'd love to see what Stefan could come up with -- jungle idols, vine-covered walls, fungi....

3. A bigger cavern entrance -- dungeon and SF people have asked for double-doors, so do cavern fans! A huge opening for a cavern would be fantastic.

4. While we're at it, something to match the staircase elements -- in particular the spiral stairs and single-floor piece stair "illusion" -- some kind of suggestion that the cavern continues down one level....

5. A raised floor area to further suggest the unevenness of a cavern -- the current pieces do a great job, but it'd be really cool to have a floor piece or three to distribute around a cavern to a get a greater degree of it.

I love all of L's ideas here, but let me re-order them in how much utility they have.
This would be the order I would like them released if they had to be released separately:

The basic floor pieces is hard enough to keep in stock, I think this would be just as big of a winner.

Or could this be up as well?
We have nice leads for mutli-level use for Fantasy and even for Sci-Fi, but we need something for Cavern as well.

The columns for Fantasy and Sci-Fi are both useful, but I think these for Cavern would be even more useful in multi-level play.

Cave entrances come in all different sizes.
It would be great if there could be entrances that also came from "outside" as well as "inside".

I am not sure of the utility of this within the niche that DF plays in, but it is a cool idea overall.

Give me a week or so and I may have some good additions to L's ideas.

Well, I guess I'll have to chime in here;

1.) Multi-level access (stairs) in caverns: I'll have to dig out the pieces and check, but I think the complex corner piece from the original cavern set would serve this purpose for now; the few times I'VE done any spelunking, the way down into the cave looked a LOT like this one. Also, the 'stairsteps' piece from Cavernous Passages could work the same way.

2.) Stalac-agmite columns: Again, let me check, but I suspect we could take extra pairs of stalagmites, cut the tops off and glue them up, and there's a column! YES, guys, I KNOW I'm advocating DF butchery, but hey, isn't that what I do anyway?

3.) Raised floor and Cavern Entrance: ME TOO! ME TOO! OOH, OOH, ME, ME!

4.) Jungle? INSIDE a cave? What do they use for light? Now, around that cavern entrance I was so enthusiastic about, OH YEAH!

I think(?) that about sums up MY ideas.

See ya!

dunno if y'all noticed but the rocks (from the passages) on top of the flat rocks (from caverns) stack to the same height as the pillars. so you can use those two elements together to get a nice big column.

also, those rocks from the passages fit into the 3 way intersection with chasm perfectly, so that you can have no chasm, or a partial one. nice work stefan!

Oh, I did notice that last part, at least -- very nice!

But I'd still like to see more -- for one thing, cavernous "columns" would be broader, and less "neat." I'd like to see some with a bigger footprint, ways of breaking up an otherwise open cavern, because right now, we have essentially two options: tiny little "room" of a cavern (or twisty passage), and big open cavern with occasional variations in "depth." We don't really have a way of making large chambers periodically interrupted by masses of rock/stalagmites/etc. That's what I'd like to see. LOS blockage, cover, hindrance, etc. Plus, it would LOOK cool....

If it also made for a practical way to support an upper level, even better!

Law,

I'm not (I HOPE!) harping here, because I haven't tried this either, but why not try doing something along the lines of putting wall pieces, curved and straight, in the middle of a BIG cavern room? They would serve to break up the flat, even floor, provide LOS breaks, and change the layout from "one big cave" to lots of little caves, all connected together. And, if it works, you could put Cavernous Passages between them to link them!

I don't KNOW that this will work, because, as I said, I haven't tried it (YET!); but it sounds to ME like it would, assuming you have a larger game table (like IO, GS or yours truly; y'know, the crazies!).

Just my nickle's worth; used to be a penny, but inflation, ya know.

See ya!

The free-standing walls that come in the Cavernous River set are actually well-suited to this. The Hanging Stalactite Opening pieces in particular would represent rows of stalactites, that adventurers might be able to fire through but not walk through.

Judicious use of these pieces might also allow the creation of natural chambers that are being used as dwellings by monstrous races. A Dead End Cavern Portable Wall piece (a U-shaped natural stone wall) might represent the equivalent of a hut, while two Curved Cavern Portable Walls, one Straight Cavern Portable Wall, and a Hanging Stalactite Opening might represent the equivalent of a house. Add some tents and campfires and so on, and your party has discovered an underground village.

This is what I had in mind when I suggested adding some rough doors in natural stone to the Cavernous line.

These are neat ideas, guys, and thanks, but I don't think they'd ever take the place of proper, official DF stuff for me. These are good ways to improvise LOS blocking etc., but I'd still want a proper huge stalagmite formation.

The problem I have with using moveable walls, or simply placing a traditional cavern wall in the middle of an otherwise open cave, is that it looks oddly square and hence out of place. The natural stone formations slope gradually, and it upsets the look of the cave to have square walls like that.

Once the wife is back in town, camera in tow, I'll sketch a little to show what I have in mind and I'll post it.

Most of these ideas sound very useful to me. I think, though, that the one I'd most like to see in a Cavern Additions type set is broad "natural" cavernous stairs that can be used to lead into a higher or lower cavern level when doing stacking of different levels. I think that is the most important piece we could get. Other than that, I like the idea of a large cavern entrance piece, a large stalagmite formation with a flat top where you can stand miniatures or use for stacking, and mushroom pieces that can be placed in caverns to create "fungi forests".

All of these suggestions are great, the raised floor seem particularly attractive to me. I was really glad when I saw that crude wooden bridge that is coming out and the water pots kind of cascading down are going to be great. I would ad to these an alternate curve wall and strait wall so when putting them together they can be more irregular but with these new removable walls that may take care of that...!
