NON-cavernous rivers? 8 Years, 4 Months ago
I was just thinking about the cavernous river sections, and what I'm planning to do with them, while painting some new GW dryads.

And I got to thinking -- these guys aren't really CAVERN dwellers. At the same time, with those removeable walls, I can use the river pieces for above-ground rivers in rocky terrain.

But then I realized -- now that DF has had the experience of working with modular river pieces, would there be any interest in a NON-cavern river set? Above ground river? The same basic design as the river set, but with dirt-and-grass ground pieces? I realize that the cavern can be "bounded" naturally and the above ground stuff would have to be arbitrarily "marked off," but at the same time, it would LOOK really, really, really, really cool. And I imagine many of us do sometimes set scenarios above ground. Both wargamers and RPGers might get a lot of use out of something that allows people to wander the countryside along a river. Plus, it might be workable with "stacking" so that the top level is the river, then below it is a dungeon or cavern, etc.

I don't know how feasible this is, but before we even ask that question, I'm curious to hear if anyone besides me would be interested....

Even with Armorcast taking itself out of the terrain race, I think there are plenty of other companies out there that crank out decent "outdoor" resin terrain.
Personally, I think DF should stay "indoors" where they are the specialists.

Why did Armorcast close? Does anyone know? I thought their stuff was pretty good. I had bought some their terrain a few years ago. Their river pieces were nice. What happened to them?

There's a company called Pegasus Hobbies that makes a pre-painted outdoor river set. IIRC, it's about $25-$30, pre-painted. It's not as modular as the DF stuff, but you can make a river that's about 4' long with it, and it looks very decent. Of course, it has a few shortcomings, like the fact that there are no Y-shaped pieces, but overall, it's a good set. You might want to check it out and see if your FLGS can get it for you (I haven't found a good source for ordering their stuff online, but if anyone knows one, let me know.)

Dungeoneer Armorcast isn't closed up for good, they scaled back their lines and are now just doing one of the many lines they had. The stuff for MechWarrior, and that is all. You may still be able to buy AC stuff around, a lot of places put big orders in before AC discontinued most of it's lines, and a FLGS... hehehe whoops was going to say "in your Area may have them", but seeing as you list Japan as your location the odds are lower that some place over there put in a big order before AC cut their product line. You might still be able to get stuff online though.

Ghengis Ska,

Thanks. Yea I haven't seen any Armorcast over here in any of the RPG/hobby shops, but I have found quite a bit of DF stuff around Tokyo and Yokohama. Most of it looks like it has been sitting on the shelves for years. That's ok , more DF for me. Hopefully, at some point in the future, I will have bought all of the remaining DF in Japan, Hehe. :)
